Metaversekg: Knowledge Graph For Engineering And Design Application In Industrial Metaverse, Utkarshani Jaimini, Tongtao Zhang, Georgia Olympia Brikis

Publications

While the term Metaverse was first coined by the author Neal Stephenson in 1992 in his science fiction novel “Snow Crash”, today the vision of an integrated virtual world is becoming a reality across different sectors. Applications in gaming and consumer products are gaining traction, industrial metaverse applications are, still in their early stages of development with one of the challenges being interoperability across various metaverse development platforms and existing software tools. In this work we propose the use of a knowledge graph based semantic data exchange layer, the Metaverse Knowledge Graph, to enable seamless transfer of information across platforms. …

Creation Of A Cip Method For The Heat Exchangers At Rolls-Royce, Melanie Howe, Austin Williams, Caroline Dempsey, Bethany Fralick

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Rolls-Royce produces various engines which must be tested prior to their distribution to ensure a high-quality product. The manufacturing plant contains four test cells where the engines can be subjected to high levels of torque and extreme temperatures. A heat exchanger is necessary in this testing system and over time, unwanted waste accumulates on the system’s plates. The team is tasked with developing and implementing a system mounted on a mobile cart which can provide data to determine whether the plates need to be cleaned. For this cleaning system to work, it must fully saturate the heat exchanger in cleaning …

Biphilic Nanoporous Surfaces Enabled Exceptional Drag Reduction And Capillary Evaporation Enhancement, Xianming Dai, Fanghao Yang, Ronggui Yang, Xinyu Huang, William A. Rigdon, Xiaodong Li, Chen Li

Faculty Publications

Simultaneously achieving drag reduction and capillary evaporation enhancement is highly desired but challenging because of the trade-off between two distinct hydrophobic and hydrophilic wettabilities. Here, we report a strategy to synthesize nanoscale biphilic surfaces to endow exceptional drag reduction through creating a unique slip boundary condition and fast capillary wetting by inducing nanoscopic hydrophilic areas. The biphilic nanoporous surfaces are synthesized by decorating hydrophilic functional groups on hydrophobic pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that the carbon nanotube-enabled biphilic nanoporous surfaces lead to a 63.1% reduction of the friction coefficient, a 61.7% wetting speed improvement, and up to 158.6% enhancement …

Handloaded Rifle Ammunition: A Look Into The Assembly Process, Load Development Methods, And Its Comparison To Factory Ammunition, Jeffrey Dalton Snyder May 2014

Handloaded Rifle Ammunition: A Look Into The Assembly Process, Load Development Methods, And Its Comparison To Factory Ammunition, Jeffrey Dalton Snyder

Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to educate the reader on the appeal of assembling firearm ammunition from its individual components, a process known as “handloading,” in comparison to factory assembled ammunition. This is accomplished by providing the reader with the benefits of handloading with an overview of the handloading process. Then, an example of a handload development method (Ladder Test) is discussed and performed. The results from the test are then analyzed and explained. Finally, the handloaded ammunition from the test is compared by function and price to factory ammunition from three different market segments.

The project portion of …

Design And Construction Of A Chemical Engineering (Cheme) Car Using Thermoelectrics, Timothy Barnhill, Sara Davino, Spencer Faltin, Lauryn Jamison, Christina Papadimitrio, Mccall Rogers May 2014

Design And Construction Of A Chemical Engineering (Cheme) Car Using Thermoelectrics, Timothy Barnhill, Sara Davino, Spencer Faltin, Lauryn Jamison, Christina Papadimitrio, Mccall Rogers

Senior Theses

Six chemical engineering undergraduates at the University of South Carolina formed a team to compete in the 2014 AIChE Chem-E-Car competition at the Southern Regional Student Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in March. In the Chem-E-Car competition, students must design and build a vehicle powered by an unconventional form of chemical energy to carry a specified weight over a given distance (1). The group used knowledge gained through undergraduate study to construct a small-scale vehicle that is powered by a set of thermoelectric generators utilizing a heat gradient between boiling water and an ethanol-dry ice mixture (2). An iodine …

High Conductivity Solid Oxide Electrolyte Composite-Laminates Utilizing Scandia/Ceria Co-Doped Zirconia Core With Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Outer Skins, Jay Neutzler, Xinyu Huang, Joshua Sightler, Yan Chen, Nina Orlovskaya

Faculty Publications

Increasing the conductivity of electrolytes in lower temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) is of great importance. However, there are several challenges that are to be addressed, which include phase stability of electrolyte’s crystal structure, chemical stability in both oxidizing and reducing environments, and maintaining mechanical integrity and high ionic conductivity over time.

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler

Faculty Publications

Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.

Noble Metal Nanostructures Synthesized Inside Mesoporous Nanotemplate Pores, J. Arbiol, E. Rossinyol, A. Cabot, F. Peiró, A. Cornet, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Noble metal impregnation has resulted in the inclusion of metal nanostructures within the SBA-15 mesoporous silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). A bright-field transmission electron microscopy three-dimensional reconstruction is proposed to analyze the localization of nanostructures within the pores of mesoporous nanotemplates. The method allows corroboration whether the nanostructures are synthesized inside the pores or they are synthesized alternatively on the nanotemplate aggregates exterior surface.

Effect Of Residual Thermal Stresses On Fracture Behavior And Mechanical Properties Of Al Sub 2 O Sub 3/Ni Cermets, Guo Jin Li, Da Ming Chen, Xiao Xian Huang, Jing Kun Guo Jan 2002

Effect Of Residual Thermal Stresses On Fracture Behavior And Mechanical Properties Of Al Sub 2 O Sub 3/Ni Cermets, Guo Jin Li, Da Ming Chen, Xiao Xian Huang, Jing Kun Guo

Faculty Publications

Effect of residual thermal stresses on fracture behavior and mechanical properties of Al2O3/Ni cermets was qualitatively explained by using theory on residual thermal stresses. When Ni particles are located within Al2O3 grains or Ni content is relatively low, tensile stresses are exerted at Al2O3-Al2O3 grain boundary. While fracturing, intergranular fracture is easily produced. When Ni particles are dispersed at Al2O3 grain boundary or Ni content is relatively high, compressive stresses are exerted at Al2O3-Al2O3grain boundary. …
