Books and Monographs
This volume collects the ideas and insights discussed at a novel conference, the Integrating Cognitive Science with Innovative Teaching in STEM Disciplines Conference, which was held September 27-28, 2012 at Washington University in St. Louis. With funding from the James S. McDonnell Foundation, the conference was hosted by Washington University’s Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE), a center established in 2011. Available for download as a PDF. Titles of individual chapters can be found at http://openscholarship.wustl.edu/circle_book/.
11th Annual Symposium Of The School Of Science, Engineering And Health, Messiah College
11th Annual Symposium Of The School Of Science, Engineering And Health, Messiah College
School of Science, Engineering & Health (SEH) Symposium
Welcome to the 11th Annual Symposium of the School of Science, Engineering and Health! This event continues a strong tradition of annual events designed to showcase student and faculty innovation, creativity and productivity in academic departments largely from within the School of Science, Engineering and Health. We look forward to incorporating new facets and improvements each year. For example, new this year: project posters will be presented by junior Engineering students during one large, multi- location, mid-afternoon poster session break that will include presentation by many other departments.
Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina
Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina
The STEAM Journal
Recently an email hit my desk from Paul Thomas in Australia with a proposal to work together on a “Cloud Curriculum for Art and Science”. I immediately agreed to collaborate. I don’t yet have a clue of what a cloud curriculum is, but what I do know is that we are ‘backing into the future’ in educational institutions and we desperately need a ‘cloud curriculum.’ We need to look over the ten year horizon. And in the emerging art-science field I doubt that the usual approach to curriculum development will work.

Automation Of Orthodontic Wire Tester For Performing Three Point Bending Tests, Adithya Venkatesan
Automation Of Orthodontic Wire Tester For Performing Three Point Bending Tests, Adithya Venkatesan
Master's Theses
Abstract
Understanding the biomechanical factors in orthodontics is important in order to improve the overall effectiveness of actual clinical treatment. An accurate method to study the threedimensional (3D) force systems and the resulting movements of teeth during orthodontic treatment is needed along with the understanding of the material properties of any orthodontic wire. Until recently, most of the orthodontic biomechanics literature was limited to twodimensional experimental studies. Recent advances in threedimensional computer modeling have also been developed but have been limited to the manual control of tooth movement. Overall, there is very little published evidence in the literature on the …

8th Annual Symposium Of The School Of Science, Engineering And Health, Messiah College
School of Science, Engineering & Health (SEH) Symposium
This symposium continues a strong tradition of annual events designed to showcase student and faculty innovation, creativity and productivity. However, it is the first that we are holding as a newly re-organized School of Science, Engineering and Health.

Universal Play Frame Vi, Justin Bazant, Cullen Crackel, Anthony Franceschi
Mechanical Engineering
This design report details the design process utilized by Adaptive Exercise Designs (AED) in creating the sixth design of the Universal Play Frame (UPF). The UPF is an adaptive frame which supports a variety of devices that allows athletes in wheelchairs with limited range of motion to participate in physical activity. The past five frame designs do not meet the needs of the Friday Club due to complications with function and time constraints. To ensure all of Fridays Club's needs were met, the problem was better defined by converting the customer requirements into engineering specifications. The design process our team …

Turning Packaging Into Profit, Rihaz Z. Chughatta
Rihaz Z Chughatta
Packaging can be an expensive function to maintain, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, Packaging can be a source of income for a company. More accurately, what if you took a look at your company’s Profit and Loss and saw Packaging as a negative expense? That’s right, you can turn packaging into profit for your company. How do you accomplish this feat? Glad you asked … read on to find three simple ways to start this process (and satisfy your curiosity) …
Ethical Issues In Graduate Research, William J. Frey
Ethical Issues In Graduate Research, William J. Frey
Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse
(Caution! This module is being published in an incomplete, preliminary version. Later edited and fuller versions will follow.) "Graduate Education in Research Ethics for Scientists and Engineers" is a project funded by the National Science Foundation (SES 0629377) to design a pilot program in research ethics for graduate students in science and engineering. This project is built around three workshops: (1) a Graduate Awareness Workshop introduces students to fundamental ethical issues in research, (2) a Moral Deliberation Workshop acquaints students with the skills of moral deliberation, (3) a Case Analysis Workshop uses realistic scenarios to allow students to practice decision-making …

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse
General Course Abstract
This two-day seminar format course exposes students to the complexities involved in real-world ethical decision-making. It provides students with strategies, or tools, for understanding and thinking through ethical problems to arrive at a decision. Students practice working with these strategies by applying them to realistic, complex cases.
Day 1 Abstract
During the first day of the course, guidelines and principles for ethical research practices are discussed. It is emphasized that students must apply guidelines in a context to arrive at a decision, and the course provides guidance on this decision-making process. Next, students learn about the personal …

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is announcing its implementation of Section 7009 of the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science (COMPETES) Act (42 U.S.C. 1862o–1). This section of the Act requires that ‘‘each institution that applies for financial assistance from the Foundation for science and engineering research or education describe in its grant proposal a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers participating in the proposed research project.’’
