Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

Large, complex facilities pose unique protection challenges involving multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration among government, academia, and the private sector. The symposium served as a forum for sharing experiences in dealing with large facility catastrophic events and risk management. The symposium was organized based on the value of interaction among different people representing diverse disciplines. In many instances, such interactions lead to solutions that would not have been developed within disciplinary stovepipes. Information Technology Services and the University Library partnered to build an Internet2-enabled Learning Commons (LC) at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The project team now extends the campus partnership model to include student and faculty users in collaboratively applying Scandinavian style co-design methodologies for physical and virtual learning and teaching environments. The interactive design approach was tested from January to June 2005 with funding from a U.S. Office of Naval Research Internet2 MiniGrant subcontract award. The project evaluated the efficacy of an interactive design/redesign methodology for encouraging user-driven, boundary-crossing information exchange and knowledge creation. Involving graduate and …
