Detection Of Gas/Odor Based On Quartz Crystal Microbalance Sensors And Fuzzy Similarity Measure, Yi-Chen Lo Jan 2009

Detection Of Gas/Odor Based On Quartz Crystal Microbalance Sensors And Fuzzy Similarity Measure, Yi-Chen Lo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this research, an array of six Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensors (QCM) using fuzzy similar measurement is proposed to recognize different gases and the percentage of those gases in a mixed gas. The experiment suggests three different gases, oxygen, helium, and argon as test gases and the nitrogen as the reference gas. Six QCMs in this array are coated respectively with six different specific polymers that are selected based on Linear Solvation Energy Relationship (LSER) method, in order to absorb gas molecules so as to recognize responses of resonant frequency changes from QCMs. Testing with different gases results in different …

Gravimetric Chemical Sensor Based On The Direct Integration Of Swnts On Aln Contour-Mode Mems Resonators, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Nipun Sinha, Marzie Taheri, Samuel Khamis, Alan Johnson, Gianluca Piazza Dec 2007

Gravimetric Chemical Sensor Based On The Direct Integration Of Swnts On Aln Contour-Mode Mems Resonators, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Nipun Sinha, Marzie Taheri, Samuel Khamis, Alan Johnson, Gianluca Piazza

Matteo Rinaldi

This paper reports on the first demonstration of a gravimetric chemical sensor based on direct integration of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) on AlN Contour-Mode MicroElectroMechanical (MEMS) resonators. In this first prototype the ability of SWNTs to readily adsorb volatile organic chemicals has been combined with the capability of AlN Contour-Mode MEMS resonator to provide for different levels of sensitivity due to separate frequencies of operation on the same die. Two devices with resonance frequencies of 287 MHz and 442 MHz have been exposed to different concentrations of DMMP in the range from 80 …

Design, Analysis And Implementation Of Orthogonal Frequency Coding In Saw Devices Used For Spread Spectrum Tags And Sensors, Derek Puccio Jan 2006

Design, Analysis And Implementation Of Orthogonal Frequency Coding In Saw Devices Used For Spread Spectrum Tags And Sensors, Derek Puccio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

SAW based sensors can offer wireless, passive operation in numerous environments and various device embodiments are employed for retrieval of the sensed data information. Single sensor systems can typically use a single carrier frequency and a simple device embodiment, since tagging is not required. In a multi-sensor environment, it is necessary to both identify the sensor and retrieve the sensed information. This dissertation presents the concept of orthogonal frequency coding (OFC) for applications to SAW sensor technology. OFC offers all advantages inherent to spread spectrum communications including enhanced processing gain and lower interrogation power spectral density (PSD). It is shown …

A Piezoresistive Metal Thin Film Tilt Sensor, Todd Allan Lindley Jul 1997

A Piezoresistive Metal Thin Film Tilt Sensor, Todd Allan Lindley

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Thin film strain gauges have many applications as transducers for monitoring pressure, vibration, and acceleration. In this thesis, a simple system, consisting of a Nichrome thin film strain gauge deposited on a glass substrate, is investigated in detail. Finite element analysis is used to model the expected sensor behavior. The substrate is shaped to exhibit a constant strain distribution, and is set up in a cantilever beam configuration. R. F. sputtering is used to deposit the Nichrome film, and the resistor pattern is transferred via photolithography. The gravitational force on a mass attached to the free end of the sensor …
