On Adaptive Code Division Multiple Access Detectors, Wenping Chen

Dissertations

Several variations of adaptive CDMA synchronous receiver schemes which can automatically adjust to the system parameters, are studied in this dissertation. Unlike their non-adaptive counterparts, these adaptive detectors require no knowledge of the received signals' energies and have similar or better performance.

Minimum energy and decorrelating criterion are used to update the weights. Since weights are updated according to the changes of the detector's outputs, hence no training sequence is required. The convergences of some of the aforementioned adaptive detectors are also disscussed.

The detectors proposed in this dissertation are near-far resistant,thus rendering the high-precision power control unnecessary. Among them, …

An adaptive CDMA receiver scheme assuming perfect synchronization has been generalized in this thesis to the asynchronous channel, a much more practical assumption of the real system. Similar formulas are derived and as its synchronous version, it is still near-far resistant and requires no knowldge [sic] of received signal amplitudes and training sequences. Thus, sophisticated high-precision power control and user power estimation are not necessary and the receiver is particularly useful in mobile communications since it can adjust itself adaptively to changes in the power of the users. Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) provides a powerful non-invasive too] for exploring the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the autonomic nervous system. In this thesis, Petri net models for Flexible Manufacturing Systems (EMS) are constructed. A firing sequence of the Petri net from the initial marking to the final marking can be seen as a schedule of the modeled FMS. By using the branch-and-bound algorithm, an optimal schedule of the FMS can be obtained.

Long haul fiber optic communication systems require extremely sensitive, low noise amplification of the weak photo diode currents generated by the received light power. Two types of amplifiers have been used for this application: a high input impedance integrating amplifier/differentiating equalizer combination or a transimpedance amplifier. Optical receivers designed with integrating amplifiers exhibit severe low frequency drift and overload problems and are not generally used in wide dynamic range receiver design. This thesis will describe an extremely wide dynamic range transimpedance amplifier incorporating unique methods to maintain stability, wide bandwidth low pulse width distortion during overload conditions.

A multiuser detector in an asynchronous, additive white Gaussian noise, codedivision multipleaccess (CDMA) channel is proposed and analyzed. It employs a combination of a decorrelator and a nonlinear multiuser interference canceler that utilizes soft tentative decisions. The weights of the canceler are adaptively adjusted, in a manner that renders the knowledge of received signal energies and the use of training sequences unnecessary. The steady state error performance of the detector is obtained and found to be superior to the performance of the same detector that utilizes hard tentative decisions.

A novel single-axis motion control system using solenoid electromagnet actuators is built and successfully controlled using a non-linear real-time control algorithm. Procedures for defining and modeling the electromagnetic actuator are established and implemented. Discrete-time nonlinear control law with global asymptotic stability and zero steady-state error is designed and numerically optimized. Stable operation with small-signal 0dB crossover frequency of 370 Rad/sec and positioning RMS steady-state error of better than 4 micron is achieved. Time domain parameters are verified on a working prototype. A step reference response positioning a 0.35 Kg mass payload over 1 cm travel in under 30 milliseconds is …

A worldwide interest has arisen on personal communications via satellite systems. The recently proposed mobile satellite service(MSS) systems are categorized four areas: geostationary earth orbit(GEO) systems, medium earth orbit(MEO) systems, low earth orbit(LEO) systems, and highly elliptical orbit(HEO) systems. Most of the systems in each category are introduced and explained including some technical details. The communication links and orbital constellations of some systems are analyzed and compared with different categories, and with different systems. Some economical aspects of the systems are mentioned. The regulatory issues about frequency spectrum allocation, and the current technical trends in these systems are summarized.

In this research, an effort was made to better understand light-dark cycles which influence the physiological and psychological rhythms, circadian rhythms and their behavior. The research concentrated on mathematically modeling circadian rhythms (specifically hamsters' circadian activity rhythms) and establishing a physical correlation and creating a meaningful relationship between the mathematical model's parameters and the real biological oscillators which are responsible for these rhythms. As the ISDN telecommunications standard gains acceptance, there is an ever increasing need for intelligent interfaces to implement the L2 protocol known as LAPD. The T7130 MLC, the T7115A SPYDER-T and the MC68020 microprocessor were used to design a LAPD Interface that conforms to the LAPD protocol as specified by CCITT.

It combine time-domain and frequency-domain analyses to yield a potentially more revealing picture of the temporal localization of a signal's spectral components. This thesis examines the in-band on-channel transmission of digital audio data for application in Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB). The premise is to use the existing FM channels for transmission of DAB. For the FM channel used for analog audio transmission, two different scenarios are suggested and investigated.

The electric field dependence of the absorption coefficient in semi‐insulating GaAs at the absorption edge was measured in a high‐voltage pulsed experiment. Pulse duration was kept below 50 ns in order to avoid thermal effects. A GaAs laser diode was used as a probe light source with wavelength varied from 902 to 911 nm. For fields up to 40 kV/cm the absorption coefficient increased from 3 to 17 cm−1 at 902 nm, with smaller absolute increases evident at the longer wavelengths. An effective logic synthesis procedure based on parallel and serial decomposition of a Boolean function is presented in this paper. The decomposition, carried out as the very first step of the .synthesis process, is based on an original representation of the function by a set of r-partitions over the set of minterms. Two different decomposition strategies, namely serial and parallel, are exploited by striking a balance between the two ideas. In this thesis, the design and fabrication of a silicon knife is described. The device design is based on the principle of oxidation sharpening.

The knife is made from a silicon wafer and can be made to be any chosen length up to 150 mm. It was made with the same basic procedures used in semiconductor chip manufacturing. We report on the intensity dependent supralinear photoconductivity in GaAs:Si:Cu material. The results of our measurements show that the effective carrier lifetime can change over two orders of magnitude with variations in the intensity of the optical excitation. A threshold intensity level has been observed and can be related to the occupancy of the deep copper level. Numerical simulations have also been carried out to analyze the trapping dynamics. The intensity dependent lifetimes obtained from the simulations match the experimental data very well. Finally, based on the nonlinear intensity dependence of the effective lifetimes, a possible low‐energy phototransistor application for …
