Open Source Low-Cost Power Monitoring System, Shane W. Oberloier, Joshua M. Pearce Oct 2018

Open Source Low-Cost Power Monitoring System, Shane W. Oberloier, Joshua M. Pearce

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

This study presents an entirely open-source, low-cost power monitoring system capable of many types of measurements including both loads and supplies such as solar photovoltaic systems. In addition, the system can be fabricated using only open source software and hardware. The design revolves around the Digital Universal Energy Logger (DUEL) Node, which is responsible for reading and properly scaling the voltage and current of a particular load, and then serializing it via an on-board ATTiny85 chip. The configuration of the DUEL node allows for custom sensitivity ranges, and can handle up to 50 A and 300 V. Up to 127 …

Intensive Mentoring And Micro-Electronics Research For Students In Engineering (Immerse) 2016 Mentoring Environment Grant, Aaron Hawkins Sep 2018

Intensive Mentoring And Micro-Electronics Research For Students In Engineering (Immerse) 2016 Mentoring Environment Grant, Aaron Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The MEG funds used for this projects supported undergraduate students working in the IMMERSE program starting in the Summer of 2016. IMMERSE employed a total of 49 students. Portions of the hourly wages charged by these students for their research work came from this MEG grant.

Opto-Thermal Characterization Of Plasmon And Coupled Lattice Resonances In 2-D Metamaterial Arrays, Vinith Bejugam Aug 2018

Opto-Thermal Characterization Of Plasmon And Coupled Lattice Resonances In 2-D Metamaterial Arrays, Vinith Bejugam

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growing population and climate change inevitably requires longstanding dependency on sustainable sources of energy that are conducive to ecological balance, economies of scale and reduction of waste heat. Plasmonic-photonic systems are at the forefront of offering a promising path towards efficient light harvesting for enhanced optoelectronics, sensing, and chemical separations. Two-dimensional (2-D) metamaterial arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles arranged in polymer lattices developed herein support thermoplasmonic heating at off-resonances (near infrared, NIR) in addition to regular plasmonic resonances (visible), which extends their applicability compared to random dispersions. Especially, thermal responses of 2-D arrays at coupled lattice resonance (CLR) wavelengths were comparable …

Solar-Powered Bushfire Detection Mechanism, Aryaman Sud Jun 2018

Solar-Powered Bushfire Detection Mechanism, Aryaman Sud

The International Student Science Fair 2018

This project designed a prototype preventative measure for heat-induced disasters like bushfires and general home fires. The motivation for this project was the loss of life and property due to wildfire in rural Australia. The micro-controller will send an alert message and sound an alarm when the temperature value exceeds or equals the set temperature of . It is programmed using the programming language embedded ‘C’. Comprising of a solar panel, siren, temperature sensor and a Bluetooth module, this eco-friendly device can provide digitalised warnings to homes and farms where protection matters most.

Simplistic programming using the KEIL IDE software …

Investigation Of The Skin Effect In Alternating Currents, Matthew Liang Jun 2018

Investigation Of The Skin Effect In Alternating Currents, Matthew Liang

The International Student Science Fair 2018

My research is on the investigation of the skin effect in alternating currents. My project is broken down into 4 sub-aims. The first aim would be, to be able to mathematically model the distribution of current in the radius of the wire, which consists of the applications of the Maxwell equation and solving zeroth order differential Bessel equations of the first kind. The next aim would be to computationally plot out the desired current readings as the depth of the wire increases from the surface, using the Matlab software. The third aim that I have would be conducting an experiment, …

A Transformative Process Control Solution, Simone Castanho Nobrega De Almedia Soares Jan 2018

A Transformative Process Control Solution, Simone Castanho Nobrega De Almedia Soares

ETD Archive

Knowing that a technology invented almost hundred years ago (PID controller) is still dominating industrial process control, a historical review was done to understand how the control field evolved. Model dependency and high level of mathematics appear as the main reasons that prevent other technologies from penetrating the engineering practice. A relatively novel methodology introduced by J. Han in 1998 called Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) came with characteristics that matches process control needs and restrictions on model dependency. This study will present a transformative solution for process control based on that. The control algorithm is designed and discretized for …

Cyber-Physical Embedded Systems With Transient Supervisory Command And Control: A Framework For Validating Safety Response In Automated Collision Avoidance Systems, Daniel K. Trembley Jan 2018

Cyber-Physical Embedded Systems With Transient Supervisory Command And Control: A Framework For Validating Safety Response In Automated Collision Avoidance Systems, Daniel K. Trembley

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The ability to design and engineer complex and dynamical Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) requires a systematic view that requires a definition of level of automation intent for the system. Since CPS covers a diverse range of systemized implementations of smart and intelligent technologies networked within a system of systems (SoS), the terms “smart” and “intelligent” is frequently used in describing systems that perform complex operations with a reduced need of a human-agent. The difference between this research and most papers in publication on CPS is that most other research focuses on the performance of the CPS rather than on the correctness …

Wetting Properties Of Structured Interfaces Composed Of Surface-Attached Spherical Nanoparticles, Bishal Bhattarai Jan 2018

Wetting Properties Of Structured Interfaces Composed Of Surface-Attached Spherical Nanoparticles, Bishal Bhattarai

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the effects of the external pressure and surface energy on stability and wetting transition at nanotextured interfaces are studied using molecular dynamics and continuum simulations. The surface roughness of the composite interface is modeled via an array of spherical nanoparticles with controlled wettability. It was found that in the absence of external pressure, the liquid interface is flat and its location relative to the solid substrate is determined by the radius of the particle and the local contact angle. With increasing pressure on the liquid film, its interface becomes more curved and the three-phase contact line is …

Chaotic Based Self-Synchronization For Rf Steganography Radar/Communication Waveform, Michael A. Gonnella Jan 2018

Chaotic Based Self-Synchronization For Rf Steganography Radar/Communication Waveform, Michael A. Gonnella

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this project, we continue previous CSR project entitled RF Steganography based Joint Radar/Communication Waveform Design to develop a bio-inspired secure low probability detection (LPD) radio frequency (RF) waveform that can serve multiple purposes simultaneously. Previously, we have developed an RF steganography based RF waveform to conceal a secure digital communication within a linear frequency modulated (LFM) chirp radar signal. By exploiting novel reduced phase shift keying modulation and variable symbol duration, the new waveform is resistant to time domain analysis, frequency domain analysis and cyclostationary analysis. However, to demodulate the hidden communication message, the intended receiver has to know …
