Designing A Power Distribution System For The Arce 257 Revit Structural Model, Reid Wilhelm Dec 2016

Designing A Power Distribution System For The Arce 257 Revit Structural Model, Reid Wilhelm

Electrical Engineering

The construction industry needs engineers. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, better known as MEPs, comprise a large number of employees who design and assist in the building of commercial structures. In particular, electrical engineers design power distribution systems for these buildings, including the power, lighting, low voltage, and fire protection subsystems.

Here at Cal Poly, architectural engineers enrolled in ARCE 257 create authentic structural plans for a fictitious two-story structure. This senior project transforms these structural plans into an architectural model and creates a power distribution system for the entire building. This is done through a building information modeling (BIM) …

Power Distribution:Protection Analysis, Avneet S. Samra Dec 2016

Power Distribution:Protection Analysis, Avneet S. Samra

Electrical Engineering

The objective of this project is to build a radial distribution system that operates on a lower voltage. The system consists of a transmission line protected by a SEL-351 Relay, a three- phase transformer protected by a SEL-587 Relay, and a three-phase induction motor protected by a Cooper Form 6 Controller. The SEL-351, SEL-587, and the Cooper Form 6 Controller are microprocessor-based relays that are used to provide protection under faulted conditions. When a fault is detected in the system, the closest upstream relay sends a trip signal to its assigned local breaker. The SEL-351 provides overcurrent protection for the …

Testing Feasibility Of Inductive Power Coupling For Modern Applications, Andrew Burman Jun 2016

Testing Feasibility Of Inductive Power Coupling For Modern Applications, Andrew Burman

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This project takes two bifilar tesla coils and uses them to find a % efficiency of power transfer as distances between the coils decrease. The reason this experiment is being conducted is to find possible implications for wireless charging of vehicles using similar style coils. This project conducted experiments on 60 Hz, 400 Hz, and 1 kHz frequencies for a small input signal. The general conclusion is that as the frequency increases more power can be transferred and higher efficiency of power transfer is seen. This project also concluded that it could be possible to get higher efficiency at a …

Rf Power Harvesting Rectenna, Jimmy Tang, Raymond Phu, Tom Geranios, Benjamin Muñoz Jun 2016

Rf Power Harvesting Rectenna, Jimmy Tang, Raymond Phu, Tom Geranios, Benjamin Muñoz

Electrical Engineering

Sustainability is one of today's primary engineering objectives. This principle involves system design that minimizes environmentally harmful energy emissions and resource consumption, and maximizes renewable energy practices [1]. Communication antennas transmit wireless signals that can be converted into usable energy. The Rectenna system described in this report, shown in Figure 1, was designed to accomplish this energy conversion, with -5dBm (316µW) minimum power at the rectifier input. Since typical ambient signal power is in the -70dBm (0.1nW) range, the proposed system could only convert passive, relatively high-power microwave band AC signals to DC. The Rectenna system was designed for 1.9GHz …

Integration Of Sel Relays To Provide Motor, Transmission Line, And Transformer Protection, Christopher Ewing, Bryce Keefer Jun 2016

Integration Of Sel Relays To Provide Motor, Transmission Line, And Transformer Protection, Christopher Ewing, Bryce Keefer

Electrical Engineering

The objective of this project is to familiarize the performers with the principles of operation of the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) protective relays in both normal and fault conditions. The SEL-587, SEL-311L and SEL-710 microprocessor-based relays are used to provide protection for a system composed of transformers, simulated transmission lines and a 3-phase induction motor. Each of these relays provides protection by sending a trip signal to local breakers upon sensing a fault condition. The SEL-587 provides overcurrent and differential protection for a 3-phase transformer, while the SEL-311L provides differential and distance protection for a transmission line, and negative sequence. …

Solar-Powered Hot Tub, Jonathan Peterson, Anthony Zepeda May 2016

Solar-Powered Hot Tub, Jonathan Peterson, Anthony Zepeda

Electrical Engineering

This paper discusses the design and implementation of a solar-powered hot tub. The concept of this project was to design an independently-operated hot tub powered by a 12V rechargeable battery, charged during the day by a single 400W solar panel. For this purpose, a twenty-year-old name-brand hot tub was purchased, in used condition. The plumbing, AC electrical wiring, and mechanical pumps were all removed and replaced with new components to meet our design specifications. Additionally, a solar water-heater was designed and integrated into the system to directly apply the sun’s heat to water pumped in and out of the tub, …

Applications Of Impedance Identification To Electric Ship System Control And Power Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation, Jonathan Siegers Jan 2016

Applications Of Impedance Identification To Electric Ship System Control And Power Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation, Jonathan Siegers

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in semiconductor technology, controls, and switching converter topologies have resulted in the increasing application of power electronics in power distribution systems. Power electronic enabled distribution systems have inspired a renewed interest in DC distribution architectures as an appealing alternative to traditional AC methods due to the significant performance and efficiency gains they offer. However, the notional power electronic based DC distribution system is a complex and extensively interconnected system consisting of multiple power converters. As a result, a number of system-level challenges related to stability arise due to interaction among multiple power converters. In addition, the power distribution …

A Statistical Analysis Of A 4.5 Mw Solar Energy Center, Archit Patnaik Jan 2016

A Statistical Analysis Of A 4.5 Mw Solar Energy Center, Archit Patnaik

Masters Theses

"This project helps a regional utility evaluate the performance of their 4.5 MW photovoltaic plant. The performance evaluation consists of characterizing the peak and average power and energy output of the plant over varying time periods. A characterization of the output power drops, or dips, is done by performing a statistical analysis of the photovoltaic plant output data. Dips are characterized by dip frequency, depth of dip, energy loss by dip, and dip duration. The results of this study will help the utility to select appropriate voltage regulating equipment on the basis of dip characteristics, and thus, optimize the performance …
