Theses : Honours

What are the modulation/demodulation schemes that are suitable tor cable or wireless high speed or broadband data link, between 1 Mbps to 30 Mbps? The recent adoption of modulation schemes such as OFDM, 8-VSB, OAM, for Digital Television broadcast (DTV), Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Lines (ADSL), and Cable Modem (CM) for Internet access, is poss'1ble because of the increase bit/Hz in these modulations over conventional modulation schemes. These modulation/demodulation schemes could also offer similar advantages to dedicated data link applications such as home-networking using cable or wireless medium. This report document the project implementation of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation as the modulation …

Theses : Honours

This thesis investigates the benefits and the significant compression that can be obtained from data that has been decomposed using a wavelet transform. A video compression algorithm was developed that employs the wavelet transform and a hierarchical motion estimation algorithm which itself utilises benefits of the wavelet transform. Using MATLAB, a popular software tool for matrix based computation and analysis, several functions were developed which together formed the video compression algorithm. A variety of tests were conducted on a sample video sequence to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the techniques employed. The results, although not the same as the …

Low Voltage Regulator Modules And Single Stage Front-End Converters, Wei Gu Jan 2001

Low Voltage Regulator Modules And Single Stage Front-End Converters, Wei Gu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Evolution in microprocessor technology poses new challenges for supplying power to these devices. To meet demands for faster and more efficient data processing, modem microprocessors are being designed with lower voltage implementations. More devices will be packed on a single processor chip and the processors will operate at higher frequencies, exceeding 1GHz. New high-performance microprocessors may require from 40 to 80 watts of power for the CPU alone. Load current must be supplied with up to 30A/µs slew rate while keeping the output voltage within tight regulation and response time tolerances. Therefore, special power supplies and Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs) …

Computing A Diameter-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree, Ayman Mahmoud Abdalla Jan 2001

Computing A Diameter-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree, Ayman Mahmoud Abdalla

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In numerous practical applications, it is necessary to find the smallest possible tree with a bounded diameter. A diameter-constrained minimum spanning tree (DCMST) of a given undirected, edge-weighted graph, G, is the smallest-weight spanning tree of all spanning trees of G which contain no path with more than k edges, where k is a given positive integer. The problem of finding a DCMST is NP-complete for all values of k; 4 ≤ k ≤ (n - 2), except when all edge-weights are identical.

A DCMST is essential for the efficiency of various distributed mutual exclusion algorithms, where …

Design And Applications Of Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Steven C. Dunn Jan 2001

Design And Applications Of Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Steven C. Dunn

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Volume gratings were studied both theoretically and experimentally in order to design and analyze practical volume holographic optical elements. The diffraction of finite (Gaussian) beams by transmission gratings is investigated. A closed form solution for the off-Bragg profiles is obtained, and the distortion in the resulting profiles is analyzed. Criteria for when the finiteness of the beam has a minimal effect on the angular selectivity response are given. A model is developed to investigate the cross talk in multiplexed gratings Experimental verification in LiNb03 and PTR glass is demonstrated. The diffraction efficiency and output profiles of finite beams diffracted …

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea Jan 2001

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea

Theses

Random numbers have conventionally been used in a range of applications such as numerical analysis, lotteries and computer simulation and as cryptographic keys. The algorithms used for the production of random numbers are termed pseudorandom, as the numbers produced are not truly random as they emanate from a deterministic periodic source that is they are predictable if a subset of the sequence is known. However, for most applications these pseudorandom number sources are entirely suitable.

For cryptographic key sources, however, the random number sequences must be statistically good and difficult to predict. Linear feedback shift registers are presented in this …

Analysis And Synthesis Of Primary Side Cycle By Cycle Control Of Isolated Flyback Converters, Radoslaw Nalepa Jan 2001

Analysis And Synthesis Of Primary Side Cycle By Cycle Control Of Isolated Flyback Converters, Radoslaw Nalepa

Theses

This work presents the analysis and design of an isolated flyback converter, without feedback from the load side. The converter is controlled from the primary side using the switch voltage and innovative control circuit topologies.

A detail study of the flyback circuit is undertaken including all known parasitics. Besides the standard parasitics, for example the capacitor resistive effect, other more subtle effects are included in the model development such as inter coil couplingj source capacitance etc. Development of these models has provided information about circuit simplifications without losing accuracy of the model. As a consequence of this model development, it …
