Development And Testing Of Braking And Acceleration Features For Vehicle Advanced Driver Assistance System, Johann Carlo Marasigan, Gian Paolo Mayuga, Elmer R. Magsino

Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering Faculty Publications

Traffic congestion is a constant problem for cities worldwide. The human driving inefficiency and poor urban planning and development contribute to traffic buildup and travel discomfort. An example of human inefficiency is the phantom traffic jam, which is caused by unnecessary braking, causing traffic to slow down, and eventually coming to a stop. In this study, a brake and acceleration feature (BAF) for the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is proposed to mitigate the effects of the phantom traffic phenomenon. In its initial stage, the BAF provides a heads-up display that gives information on how much braking and acceleration input …

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan Jan 2016

Solar Photovoltaic System Control Topology Investigation For Power Source Mismatch, Lynette O'Callaghan

Conference papers

An investigation into solar photovoltaic (PV) system control topology selection, when partial shade is anticipated in the solar array, is presented. As available area is maximised in Building Integrated PV (BIPV) systems, shading is an inevitable consequence. The presence of partial shading in a PV array leads to multiple power peaks in the power-voltage curve, due to bypass diode sections being triggered, and an increase in module mismatch losses in the array. A building energy design software, Integrated Environmental Solutions, is used to determine the shadowed area on PV modules throughout the year, incorporating the PV system location and geometrical …

Foss Big Data Storage Solution, Nurdeen Salami

STAR Program Research Presentations

NASA projects require a reliable approach to store large volumes of data. Accordingly, it is crucial to adopt a lightweight, reliable, and scalable database. Current NASA databases bear costly license fees with undesirable speed and flexibility. The purpose of utilizing the AERO Institute as an IT test bed, or “Sandbox,” is to design, build, test, and implement software solutions prior to transfer to NASA projects. Cassandra coupled with the Astyanax API is a viable solution for storing big data. Store a minimum of 2GB of C-FOSS data in multiple file formats (.csv, .log, .xml, and .jpg). Use benchmark tests to …

Method And System For Creating Three-Dimensional Spatial Audio, Jens Hannemann, Kevin D. Donohue

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Patents

A system and method for rendering a virtual sound source using a plurality of speakers in an arbitrary arrangement includes expanding a wave field of the virtual sound source and a composite wave field generated by the plurality of speakers into multi-pole expansions, and equating the multi-pole expansions to each other to form a continuous equation. A set of constraints is applied to the continuous equation that minimize an error in a sweet spot region resulting in a linear system of equations. The linear system of equations is solved using singular-value decomposition to arrive at a pseudo-inverse representing a multi-dimensional …

Generalised Design Process For Fiber-Bend-Loss-Based Edge Filters For A Wavelength Measurement System, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova

Articles

We investigate and present a generalized methodology for the design of a fiber-bend-loss-based edge filter, starting with the task of evaluating and selecting suitable fibers and then considering the design of a fiber-bending-loss edge filter. As an example to illustrate the methodology, a Corning SMF28e fiber with a 900 μmdiameter is selected and two sample edge filters are designed for experimental verification. The designed edge filters are compact, easy to fabricate, meet target spectral specifications, and show low polarization-dependent loss, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for fiber-bend-loss-based edge filter design.

Resolution Investigation Of A Ratiometric Wavelength Measurement System, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell Sep 2007

Resolution Investigation Of A Ratiometric Wavelength Measurement System, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Theoretical analysis and experimental investigations are presented on the resolution of a ratiometric wavelength measurement system. Theoretical modeling indicates that the resolution of a ratiometric wavelength measurement system is determined by the signal-to-noise ratio of the input signal and the noise of the photodetectors associated with optical-to-electronic conversion. For experimental verification, a ratiometric system employing a macrobending standard single-mode fiber is developed and corresponding results are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Adequacy Assessment Of The Irish Generation System Including Wind Capacity, William Carr Jan 2005

Adequacy Assessment Of The Irish Generation System Including Wind Capacity, William Carr

Masters

Adequacy assessment of generation capacity is a statistical measure of the ability of existing or planned generation plant to meet predicted levels of electrical demand. Complications arise in this calculation because at any point in time the exact level of capacity available is variable due to planned and forced outages. Planned outrages is a term used to describe the period during the year when a generation unit is required to be shut down for maintenance work to be carried out. The duration of this outrage is normally known and its timing can be chosen. Forced outages describe the random failure …

Method And System For Gas Metal Arc Welding, Yuming Zhang, Liguo E Dec 1999

Method And System For Gas Metal Arc Welding, Yuming Zhang, Liguo E

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Patents

An improved method of gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is disclosed. The method includes utilizing a pulsed current having a variable waveform to ensure the detachment of one-droplet-per-pulse of current. During the welding process, the current is sufficient to produce a droplet at the end of a consumable electrode wire. After the droplet reaches a desired size, the current is lowered to induce an oscillation in the droplet. The current is then increased which, in combination with the momentum created by the oscillation, effects droplet detachment. The oscillation may be monitored by observing the arc voltage to determine a preferred …
