Gaussian Nonlinear Line Attractor For Learning Multidimensional Data, Theus H. Aspiras, Vijayan K. Asari, Wesam Sakla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The human brain’s ability to extract information from multidimensional data modeled by the Nonlinear Line Attractor (NLA), where nodes are connected by polynomial weight sets. Neuron connections in this architecture assumes complete connectivity with all other neurons, thus creating a huge web of connections. We envision that each neuron should be connected to a group of surrounding neurons with weighted connection strengths that reduces with proximity to the neuron. To develop the weighted NLA architecture, we use a Gaussian weighting strategy to model the proximity, which will also reduce the computation times significantly.

Once all data has been trained in …

A Cmos Spiking Neuron For Brain-Inspired Neural Networks With Resistive Synapses And In-Situ Learning, Xinyu Wu, Vishal Saxena, Kehan Zhu, Sakkarapani Balagopal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nano-scale resistive memories are expected to fuel dense integration of electronic synapses for large-scale neuromorphic system. To realize such a brain-inspired computing chip, a compact CMOS spiking neuron that performs in-situ learning and computing while driving a large number of resistive synapses is desired. This work presents a novel leaky integrate-and-fire neuron design which implements the dual-mode operation of current integration and synaptic drive, with a single opamp and enables in-situ learning with crossbar resistive synapses. The proposed design was implemented in a 0.18μm CMOS 􀀃technology. Measurements show neuron’s ability to drive a thousand resistive synapses, and demonstrate an in-situ …

Background/Purpose: Early detection of malignant melanoma is an important public health challenge. In the USA, dermatologists are seeing more melanomas at an early stage, before classic melanoma features have become apparent. Pink color is a feature of these early melanomas. If rapid and accurate automatic detection of pink color in these melanomas could be accomplished, there could be significant public health benefits.

Methods: Detection of three shades of pink (light pink, dark pink, and orange pink) was accomplished using color analysis techniques in five color planes (red, green, blue, hue, and saturation). Color shade analysis was performed using a logistic …

Filters And Matrix Factorization, Myung-Sin Song, Palle E. T. Jorgensen

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

We give a number of explicit matrix-algorithms for analysis/synthesis

in multi-phase filtering; i.e., the operation on discrete-time signals which

allow a separation into frequency-band components, one for each of the

ranges of bands, say N , starting with low-pass, and then corresponding

filtering in the other band-ranges. If there are N bands, the individual

filters will be combined into a single matrix action; so a representation of

the combined operation on all N bands by an N x N matrix, where the

corresponding matrix-entries are periodic functions; or their extensions to

functions of a complex variable. Hence our setting entails …

Forecasting Design Day Demand Using Extremal Quantile Regression, David Joseph Kaftan, Jarrett L. Smalley, George F. Corliss, Ronald H. Brown, Richard James Povinelli Nov 2015

Forecasting Design Day Demand Using Extremal Quantile Regression, David Joseph Kaftan, Jarrett L. Smalley, George F. Corliss, Ronald H. Brown, Richard James Povinelli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Extreme events occur rarely, making them difficult to predict. Extreme cold events strain natural gas systems to their limits. Natural gas distribution companies need to be prepared to satisfy demand on any given day that is at or warmer than an extreme cold threshold. The hypothetical day with temperature at this threshold is called the Design Day. To guarantee Design Day demand is satisfied, distribution companies need to determine the demand that is unlikely to be exceeded on the Design Day.

We approach determining this demand as an extremal quantile regression problem. We review current methods for extremal quantile regression. …

Darp-Mp: Dynamically Adaptable Resilient Pipeline Design In Multicore Processors, Hu Chen, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this article, we demonstrate that the sensitized path delays in various microprocessor pipe stages exhibit intriguing temporal and spatial variations during the execution of real-world applications. To effectively exploit these delay variations, we propose dynamically adaptable resilient pipeline (DARP)-a series of runtime techniques to boost power-performance efficiency and fault tolerance in a pipelined microprocessor. DARP employs early error prediction to avoid amajor portion of the timing errors. We combine DARP with the state-of-art topologically homogeneous and power-performance heterogeneous (THPH) architecture to build up a new frontier for the energy efficiency of multicore processors (DARP-MP). Using a rigorous circuitarchitectural infrastructure, we …

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs have been long considered synthesized endogenously until very recent discoveries showing that human can absorb dietary microRNAs from animal and plant origins while the mechanism remains unknown. Compelling evidences of microRNAs from rice, milk, and honeysuckle transported to human blood and tissues have created a high volume of interests in the fundamental questions that which and how exogenous microRNAs can be transferred into human circulation and possibly exert functions in humans. Here we present an integrated genomics and computational analysis to study the potential deciding features of transportable microRNAs. Specifically, we analyzed all publicly available microRNAs, a total of …

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to investigate the electrode kinetics of VII-VIII and VIV-VV in H2SO4 on glassy carbon, carbon paper, carbon xerogel, and carbon fibers. It was shown that, for all carbon materials investigated, the kinetics of VII-VIII is enhanced by anodic, and inhibited by cathodic, treatment of the electrode; in contrast, the kinetics of VIV-VV is inhibited by anodic, and enhanced by cathodic, treatment. The potential region for each of these effects varied only slightly with carbon material. Rate constants …

Hierarchical Equivalent Source Algorithm Based On Relaxed Spherical Equivalence Surface, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hong Tat Ewe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new hierarchical algorithm based on surface equivalence principle is proposed in this work. The equivalent sources residing on relaxed spherical equivalence surfaces are computed by closed-form integral operators rather than numerical approximations. Consequently, a hierarchical algorithm based on oct-tree is straightforward to implement. Numerical examples validate the accuracy and capability of the proposed algorithm.

A Supercell Based Dual Beam Dielectric Grating Antenna For 60 Ghz Application, Zi Long Ma, Chi Hou Chan, Kung Bo Ng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A dual-beam dielectric grating antenna based on the supercell (SC) concept is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis shows that with the perturbations of different unit cells (UC), two space harmonic modes (m = -1 and m = -2) are excited (above the air line) in the dispersion diagram of the supercell in a certain frequency range. This phenomenon leads to the generation of two radiation beams in the far-field region. At the operating frequency where the phase constants β-1 =β in symmetric directions. In addition, a symmetric SC is proposed and carefully designed to achieve equal performance (beam width …

Calculating The Scattered Fields From The Fock Currents Of The 3-D Convex Scatterers By The Incremental Length Diffraction Technique, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Tie Jun Cui, Ya Qiu Jin, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2015

Calculating The Scattered Fields From The Fock Currents Of The 3-D Convex Scatterers By The Incremental Length Diffraction Technique, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Tie Jun Cui, Ya Qiu Jin, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we consider the accuracy improvement of the high frequency scattered fields from the 3-D convex scatterers with the aid of the Fock current and the incremental length diffraction coefficient (ILDC) technique. To efficiently calculate the Fock currents, we adopt the numerical contour deformation method. Then, by using the Fock currents and the ILDC technique, high frequency scattered fields are clearly formulated. Compared to the PO scattered fields from the 3-D convex sphere, numerical results demonstrate significant accuracy enhancement of the scattered field via the Fock current.

Electromagnetic Characterization For Graphene By The Peec Method, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2015

Electromagnetic Characterization For Graphene By The Peec Method, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electromagnetic (EM) features of graphene are characterized by the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model for the first time with an impedance boundary condition. By incorporating the impedance boundary condition into the PEEC model, a novel surface conductivity circuit is proposed for graphene. Furthermore, the definition of the absorption cross section (σabs) and the scattering cross section (σsca) are revisited to make them feasible for PEEC analysis. The application of the impedance boundary condition significantly alleviates the memory consumption and the CPU time. To validate the proposed algorithm, numerical examples are presented and compared with existing references.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Skin effect suppression in planar multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Copper (Cu) conductors was realized at the 0-10 MHz frequency range through infrared laser irradiation of MWCNTs, which were coated on the surface of the Cu substrate via the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The effect of laser irradiation and its power density on electrical and structural properties of the MWCNT/Cu conductors was investigated using a wavelength-tunable CO2 laser and then comparing the performance of the samples prepared at different conditions with that of pristine Cu. The irradiation at λ=9.219 μm proved to be effective in selective delivery of energy towards depths close …

Mutations Of Adjacent Amino Acid Pairs Are Not Always Independent, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz Oct 2015

Mutations Of Adjacent Amino Acid Pairs Are Not Always Independent, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Evolutionary studies usually assume that the genetic mutations are independent of each other. This paper tests the independence hypothesis for genetic mutations with regard to protein coding regions. According to the new experimental results the independence assumption generally holds, but there are certain exceptions. In particular, the coding regions that represent two adjacent amino acids seem to change in ways that sometimes deviate significantly from the expected theoretical probability under the independence assumption.

A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz Oct 2015

A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

For over a century the text of the Phaistos Disk remained an enigma without a convincing translation. This paper presents a novel semi-automatic translation method that uses for the first time a recently discovered connection between the Phaistos Disk symbols and other ancient scripts, including the Old Hungarian alphabet. The connection between the Phaistos Disk script and the Old Hungarian alphabet suggested the possibility that the Phaistos Disk language may be related to Proto-Finno-Ugric, Proto-Ugric, or Proto-Hungarian. Using words and suffixes from those languages, it is possible to translate the Phaistos Disk text as an ancient sun hymn, possibly connected …

A Computational Study Of The Evolution Of Cretan And Related Scripts, Peter Revesz Oct 2015

A Computational Study Of The Evolution Of Cretan And Related Scripts, Peter Revesz

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Crete was the birthplace of several ancient writings, including the Cretan Hieroglyphs, the Linear A and the Linear B scripts. Out of these three only Linear B is deciphered. The sound values of the Cretan Hieroglyph and the Linear A symbols are unknown and attempts to reconstruct them based on Linear B have not been fruitful. In this paper, we compare the ancient Cretan scripts with four other Mediterranean and Black Sea scripts, namely Phoenician, South Arabic, Greek and Old Hungarian. We provide a computational study of the evolution of the three Cretan and four other scripts. This study encompasses …
