Generalized Neuron Based Pss And Adaptive Pss, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik Dec 2005

Generalized Neuron Based Pss And Adaptive Pss, D. K. Chaturvedi, O. P. Malik

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

Artificial neural networks can be used as intelligent controllers to control non-linear, dynamic systems through learning, which can easily accommodate the non-linearities and time dependencies. However, they require large training time and large number of neurons to deal with complex problems. Taking benefit of the characteristics of a Generalized Neuron that requires much smaller training data and shorter training time, a Generalized Neuron-Based Power System Stabilizer (GNPSS) and an adaptive version of the same have been developed. The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of the GNPSS with that of an adaptive version, the weights of which …

Filtration And Enhancement Of Environmental Characteristics Extracted From Sar Imagery Using Dynamic Kalman Technique, Ivan E. Villalon-Turrubiates

Iván Esteban Villalón Turrubiates

In this study, we propose a new computational paradigm based on the use of the Kalman filtering technique adjusted to reconstruct the dynamic behavior of the physical and electrical characteristics of different environmental monitoring data provided via reconstructive SAR imagery. As a matter of particular study we develop and report the Kalman filter-based algorithm for high-resolution filtration of the dynamic behavior of the hydrological indexes of the particular real-world SAR images of the test remotely sensed scenes. The simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Incorporation Of Self-Commutating Csc Transmission In Power System Load-Flow, Lasantha B. Perera, Y. H. Liu, N. R. Watson, J. Arrillaga Sep 2005

Incorporation Of Self-Commutating Csc Transmission In Power System Load-Flow, Lasantha B. Perera, Y. H. Liu, N. R. Watson, J. Arrillaga

Lasantha Bernard Perera

This paper presents a method which incorporates self-commutated CSC transmission directly in a fast decoupled Newton-Raphson a.c. load flow. The d.c. equations are presented in a per unit form that is compatible with the per unit a.c. equations. A sequential method of solution is adopted in solving the load flow equations. The a.c. system equations are solved with the d.c. system modelled simply as a real and reactive power injection at the terminal busbar and for a d.c. solution, the a.c. system is modelled simply as a constant voltage at the converter a.c. terminal busbar. Further the new load flow …

Design Of A Reliable Remote Surface Detector Based On Ultrasonic Pulse-Transit Technique To Detect Uneven & Non-Smooth Porous Snow Surfaces, Raman Attri Sep 2005

Design Of A Reliable Remote Surface Detector Based On Ultrasonic Pulse-Transit Technique To Detect Uneven & Non-Smooth Porous Snow Surfaces, Raman Attri

Raman K. Attri

This paper discusses design control techniques used to design ultrasonic pulse echo method based remote surface detector to detect objects with porous, un-even, irregular surfaces like snow. For such surfaces there is ample possibility of scatter of reflected beam in multiple directions, absorption of ultrasonic energy within the pores and reflected energy too feeble to detect. In some cases the reflected beam may altogether miss the receiver resulting in no surface detection at all. Scatter and penetration of ultrasonic energy at such irregular porous uneven surfaces poses great difficulties in designing a reliable Remote Surface detector. In this paper, we …

Design Of Stable Narrow Band-Pass Filter Using Multi-Stage Biquad Topology, Raman Attri Sep 2005

Design Of Stable Narrow Band-Pass Filter Using Multi-Stage Biquad Topology, Raman Attri

Raman K. Attri

Band pass filtering techniques have been a challenging task due to requirement of keeping Quality factor, gain and mid-frequency of the filter independent of each other. Other most important aspect is keeping the filter stable, keeping mid-frequency immune to circuit component tolerances and to achieve the mid-frequency at the accurate value. The Biquad family of topologies are typically used for a stabilized filtering application, however the design requirements on Biquad topology for low frequency application is still a challenge. The requirements become more stringent for bandwidth curve, roll-off curve and preciseness of frequency filtering as we move down to low …

Practical Design Evaluation Of Extremely Narrow Band-Pass Filter Topologies, Raman K. Attri

Raman K. Attri

Narrow Band pass filtering techniques have been a challenging task since the inception of audio and telecommunication applications. The challenge involves keeping Quality factor, gain and mid-frequency of the filter independent of each other. Other most important aspect is keeping the filter stable, keeping mid-frequency immune to circuit component tolerances and to achieve the mid-frequency at the accurate value. The requirements turns more stringent when working with low frequency Narrow band-pass filters where the shift in few Hz would cause great frequency errors. The selection of right topology for best performance is the key top successful design. This paper objectively …

Simulation Study Of The Unified Bayesian-Regularization Technique For Enhanced Radar Imaging, Yuriy V. Shkvarko, Ivan E. Villalon-Turrubiates

Iván Esteban Villalón Turrubiates

In this paper, we intend to present the results of extended simulation study of the family of the radar image (RI) formation algorithms that employ the recently developed and investigated fused Bayesian-regularization (FBR) paradigm for high-resolution reconstruction of the spatial spectrum pattern (SSP) of the wavefield sources distributed in the remotely sensed environment. The FBR methodology is based on the aggregation of the Bayesian minimum risk statistical optimal estimation strategy with the descriptive weighted constrained least squares optimization technique that involves the non trivial a priori information on the desired properties of the SSP to be reconstructed from the actually …

Dynamic Model Of Hiv/Aids Population Of Agra Region, D. K. Chaturvedi Sep 2005

Dynamic Model Of Hiv/Aids Population Of Agra Region, D. K. Chaturvedi

D. K. Chaturvedi Dr.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is spreading rapidly in all regions of the world. But in India it is only 20 years old. Within this short period it has emerged as one of the most serious public health problems in the country, which greatly affect the socio-economical growth. The HIV problem is very complex and ill defined from the modeling point of view. Keeping in the view the complexities of the HIV infection and its transmission, it is difficult to make exact estimates of HIV prevalence. It is more so in the Indian context, with its …

Signal Processing Strategies That Improve Performance And Understanding Of The Quantitative Ultrasound Spectral Fit Algorithm, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien Sep 2005

Signal Processing Strategies That Improve Performance And Understanding Of The Quantitative Ultrasound Spectral Fit Algorithm, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien

Timothy A. Bigelow

Quantifying the size of the tissue microstructure using the backscattered power spectrum has had limited success due to frequency-dependent attenuation along the propagation path, thus masking the frequency dependence of the scatterer size. Previously, the SPECTRAL FIT algorithm was developed to solve for total attenuation and scatterer size simultaneously [Bigelow et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117, 1431-1439 (2005)]. Herein, the outcomes from signal processing strategies on the SPECTRAL FIT algorithm are investigated. The signal processing methods can be grouped into two categories, viz., methods that improve the performance of the algorithm and methods that provide insight. The methods that …

Impact Of Interconnection Photovoltaic/Wind System With Utility On Their Reliability Using A Fuzzy Scheme, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset Aug 2005

Impact Of Interconnection Photovoltaic/Wind System With Utility On Their Reliability Using A Fuzzy Scheme, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Dr. Adel A. Elbaset

Reliability analysis has been considered as an important step in any system design process. a reliable electrical power system means that the system which having sufficient power to feed the load demand during a certain period or in other word, having small Loss of Load Probability (LOLP). LOLP is defined as an expected fraction of load not met by its needed power from electrical power system during its lifetime. Photovoltaic (PV) / Wind Energy System (WES) hybrid electric power system (PV/WES HEPS) differs considerably from the utility grid (UG) in their performance and operating characteristics. With the interconnection of PV/WES …

Non-Contact Detection Techniques And Technologies For Detection Of Objects In Air, Under-Ground And Under-Water, Raman Attri Aug 2005

Non-Contact Detection Techniques And Technologies For Detection Of Objects In Air, Under-Ground And Under-Water, Raman Attri

Raman K. Attri

In this white paper, we will present review and compilation of various object detection techniques currently available in different scenarios and situations. Automatic Object detection in the air, beneath other materials, under water and under the earth surface as well as over the surface is one of the advanced sciences employing many principles of multiple engineering domains together. “See-through” methods – seeing beyond the visible objects, has been inherent desire of human being since the practice of science. Not only this, a craving to detect the objects without directly “seeing upon” them with naked eyes calls upon some automatic procedures …

A Model For Estimating Ultrasound Attenuation Along The Propagation Path To The Fetus From Backscattered Waveforms, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien Aug 2005

A Model For Estimating Ultrasound Attenuation Along The Propagation Path To The Fetus From Backscattered Waveforms, Timothy A. Bigelow, William D. O'Brien

Timothy A. Bigelow

Accurate estimates of the ultrasound pressure and/or intensity incident on the developing fetus on a patient-specific basis could improve the diagnostic potential of medical ultrasound by allowing the clinician to increase the transmit power while still avoiding the potential for harmful bioeffects. Neglecting nonlinear effects, the pressure/intensity can be estimated if an accurate estimate of the attenuation along the propagation path (i.e., total attenuation) can be obtained. Herein, a method for determining the total attenuation from the backscattered power spectrum from the developing fetus is proposed. The boundaries between amnion and either the fetus' skull or soft tissue are each …

A Self-Consistent Transport Model For Molecular Conduction Based On Extended Hückel Theory With Full Three-Dimensional Electrostatics, Eric Polizzi, S. Datta, L. Siddiqui, A. Ghosh, M. Paulsson, F. Zahid Aug 2005

A Self-Consistent Transport Model For Molecular Conduction Based On Extended Hückel Theory With Full Three-Dimensional Electrostatics, Eric Polizzi, S. Datta, L. Siddiqui, A. Ghosh, M. Paulsson, F. Zahid

Eric Polizzi

We present a transport model for molecular conduction involving an extended Hückel theoretical treatment of the molecular chemistry combined with a nonequilibrium Green’s function treatment of quantum transport. The self-consistent potential is approximated by CNDO (complete neglect of differential overlap) method and the electrostatic effects of metallic leads (bias and image charges) are included through a three-dimensional finite element method. This allows us to capture spatial details of the electrostatic potential profile, including effects of charging, screening, and complicated electrode configurations employing only a single adjustable parameter to locate the Fermi energy. As this model is based on semiempirical methods …

The Case For Thoroughly Testing Complex System Dynamic Models Jul 2005

The Case For Thoroughly Testing Complex System Dynamic Models

Wayne W. Wakeland

In order to determine whether model testing is as useful as suggested by modeling experts, the full battery of model tests recommended by Forrester, Senge, Sterman, and others was applied retrospectively to a complex previously-published system dynamics model. The time required to carry out each type of test was captured, and the benefits that resulted from applying each test was determined subjectively. The resulting benefit to cost ratios are reported. These ratios suggest that rather than focusing primarily on sensitivity testing, modelers should consider other types of model tests such as extreme condition tests and family member tests. The study …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Surface Roughness Scattering In Silicon Nanowire Transistors, Eric Polizzi, M. Lundstrom, S. Datta, A. Ghosh, J. Wang Jul 2005

A Theoretical Investigation Of Surface Roughness Scattering In Silicon Nanowire Transistors, Eric Polizzi, M. Lundstrom, S. Datta, A. Ghosh, J. Wang

Eric Polizzi

Using a full three-dimensional (3D), quantum transport simulator, we theoretically investigate the effects of surface roughness scattering (SRS) on the device characteristics of Si nanowire transistors (SNWTs). The microscopic structure of the Si/SiO2 interface roughness is directly treated by using a 3D finite element technique. The results show that (1) SRS reduces the electron density of states in the channel, which increases the SNWT threshold voltage, and (2) the SRS in SNWTs becomes less effective when fewer propagating modes are occupied, which implies that SRS is less important in small-diameter SNWTs with few modes conducting than in planar metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistors …

The Case Against A Proposed Relaxation Of Out-Of-Band Noise And Spurious Specifications For Docsis Edge-Qam Rf Devices, Ron D. Katznelson Jun 2005

The Case Against A Proposed Relaxation Of Out-Of-Band Noise And Spurious Specifications For Docsis Edge-Qam Rf Devices, Ron D. Katznelson

Ron D. Katznelson

This submission supported Broadband Innovations' (BI) opposition to relaxing the Out-of-Band Noise and Spurious specifications in QAM downstream transmission of Edge-QAM (“EQAM”) devices. The specifications relaxation was proposed by a consortium of equipment vendors who called it the Joint Proposal for Self-Aggregate noise and spurious (“JPSA”). This note explains why the adoption of the JPSA would strip CATV systems from having sufficient operational noise and interference margins.

Post submission note: Despite the overwhelming majority of the Working Group's acceptance and recommendation of the JPSA, CableLabs' Technical Board voted to accept BI's proposal and to reject the JPSA.

Digital Calculation Of Frequency Of Periodical Signal (Sinusoidal And Triangular, Tarak Benslimane, Boukhemis Chetate

Boukhemis Chetate

– In This paper, a method of digital calculation of frequency of periodical signal (sinusoidal, triangular and square signals) is proposed. This method is based on calculation of time between two successive peaks of the rectified signal which constitutes it’s half period. This method allows the measurement of AC current and voltage of AC electrical network. To apply this method, it is necessary to have current and voltage sensors, analogue/ digital converter (ADC) and a processor. A software C++ based program is developed which can be implemented using appropriate processor. In the end are presented the digital simulation results.

Mil-Std-188-125-1, High-Altitude Emp Protection For Fixed Ground-Based Facilities Mar 2005

Mil-Std-188-125-1, High-Altitude Emp Protection For Fixed Ground-Based Facilities

George H Baker

MIL-STD-188-125-1 establishes minimum requirements and design objectives for high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) hardening of fixed ground-based facilities that perform critical, time-urgent command, control, communications, computer, and intelligence (C4I) missions. The standard prescribes minimum performance requirements for low-risk protection from mission-aborting damage or upset due to HEMP environments. It also addresses minimum testing requirements for demonstrating that prescribed performance has been achieved and for verifying that the installed protection subsystem provides the operationally required hardness for the completed facility. Covered fixed ground-based facility types include subscriber terminals and data processing centers, transmitting and receiving communications stations, and relay facilities. Use of …

Pulse Multiplication In The Self-Commutating Parallel Converter By Means Of Multi-Level Dc Voltage Reinjection, Lasantha Bernard Perera Mar 2005

Pulse Multiplication In The Self-Commutating Parallel Converter By Means Of Multi-Level Dc Voltage Reinjection, Lasantha Bernard Perera

Lasantha Bernard Perera

A multi-level dc voltage reinjection concept is described that multiplies the pulse number of the twelve-pulse dual parallel converter. The ideal reinjection waveform for complete elimination of the harmonic content is first derived, and a practical approximation is proposed which converts the standard dual converter into a sixty-pulse scheme, thus meeting the strictest harmonic standards without the assistance of filters or Pulse Width Modulation.

Estimation Of Total Attenuation And Scatterer Size From Backscattered Ultrasound Waveforms, Timothy A. Bigelow, Michael L. Oelze, William D. O'Brien Mar 2005

Estimation Of Total Attenuation And Scatterer Size From Backscattered Ultrasound Waveforms, Timothy A. Bigelow, Michael L. Oelze, William D. O'Brien

Timothy A. Bigelow

Quantitative ultrasound techniques using backscattered echoes have had limited success in vivo due to the frequency-dependent attenuation along the entire propagation path masking the frequency dependence of the backscatter. Herein, total attenuation and scatterer size are estimated simultaneously by an analysis of the in vivo backscattered power spectrum using two approaches. The simulations used to evaluate the two approaches used frequencies between 4 and 11 MHz with an effective scatterer radius of 25 μm. The first approach was based on approximations of the in vivo backscattered power spectrum (i.e., assumed Gaussian function), wherein attenuation and size were estimated by assuming …
