Physical Layer Secret Key Agreement Using One-Bit Quantization And Low-Density Parity-Check Codes, John A. Snoap

Physical layer approaches for generating secret encryption keys for wireless systems using channel information have attracted increased interest from researchers in recent years. This paper presents a new approach for calculating log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for secret key generation that is based on one-bit quantization of channel measurements and the difference between channel estimates at legitimate reciprocal nodes. The studied secret key agreement approach, which implements advantage distillation along with information reconciliation using Slepian-Wolf low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, is discussed and illustrated with numerical results obtained from simulations. Nano satellites are becoming more and more popular space platforms due to their relatively low cost. Constellations of many of these small satellites are being launched for scientific and research purposes. This thesis has examined implementing a communications system for small satellites that can be used to maintain constant contact with satellites as they orbit the Earth. It analyzes the various components of a small satellite and how they integrate. The number of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations is growing exponentially, and to improve the energy yield and the efficiency of PV systems, it is necessary to have correct methods for simulation, measurement, and emulation. PV systems can be simulated using PV models for different configurations and technologies of PV modules. Additionally, different environmental conditions of solar irradiance, temperature, and partial shading can be incorporated in the model to accurately simulate PV systems for any given condition.

Since the early studies by Auston, photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSSs) have been investigated intensively for many applications owing to their unique advantages over conventional gas and mechanical switches. These advantages include high speeds, fast rise times, optical isolation, compact geometry, and negligible jitter. Another important requirement is the ability to operate at high repetition rates with long device lifetimes (i.e., good reliability without degradation). Bubbles induced by blast waves or shocks are speculated as the major cause of damage in biological cells in mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Microbubble collapse was found to induce noticeable cell detachment from the cell substrate, changes in focal adhesion, and biomechanics. To better understand the bubble mechanism, a system needs to be constructed which allows clear differentiation on the impact of bubbles from that of shocks. The Input Decoupled Partially Adiabatic Logic (IDPAL) family was developed by Cutitaru to consume less power than other logic families as well as producing a resistance to side-channel attacks. With modifications made to IDPAL, the side-channel attack resistance is being revisited and quantified. The three logic families are compared in the work are CMOS, 2N2P, and IDPAL. An AND/NAND gate was created using each logic family and compared with two tests: 1) a simulated side-channel attack and 2) an energy analysis. The brainstem is a part of the brain that is connected to the cerebrum and the spinal cord. Ten out of twelve pairs of cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem. The cranial nerves transmit information between the brain and various parts of the body. Due to its anatomical and physiological relevance, a descriptive digital brainstem is important for neurosurgery planning and simulation. For both of these neurosurgical applications, the complexity of the brainstem requires a digital atlas approach to segmentation that maps intensities to tissues rather than less descriptive voxel or surface-based approaches. In this dissertation, we study sparse coding based feature representation method for the classification of multispectral and hyperspectral images (HSI). The existing feature representation systems based on the sparse signal model are computationally expensive, requiring to solve a convex optimization problem to learn a dictionary. A sparse coding feature representation framework for the classification of HSI is presented that alleviates the complexity of sparse coding through sub-band construction, dictionary learning, and encoding steps. The fabrication of supercapacitor devices consisting of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has great theoretical capabilities of high specific capacitance, energy density, and power density. Various methods of dispersion and deposition are utilized to optimize such supercapacitors with BNNTs and CNTs, and also to produce devices with only CNTs to use as a benchmark. In addition to capacitance measurements, BNNTs that were exposed to nitric acid were compared to fabricated devices without acid exposure.

Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial methods is a critical issue in many fields of medicine. This work describes the studies performed to characterize and optimize the bacterial inactivation effects of a non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma brush and plasma jet on a laminate surface inoculated with Acinetobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus aureus, and a cultivated Enterococcus faecalis biofilm, respectively. These treatments are pilot studies for eventual application to surface sterilization in hospitals and root canal disinfection. To evaluate bacterial inactivation, after treatment and recovery, the bacterial colony forming units (CFUs) are counted. Several different methods are used to optimize the antimicrobial effect.
