Cable Analysis For Electromagnetic Compatibility Issues, Guanghua Li
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation consists of three papers. In the first paper, a high-sensitivity resonant electric field probe was designed, consisting of an LC resonator loaded by quarter-wave transformers. At the resonant frequency of 1.577 GHz, the measured |S21| from a matched trace to the resonant probe was approximately 6.6 dB higher than that of an equivalently sized broadband probe.
In the second paper, a method for creating a simple SPICE model is proposed such that the SPICE model allows prediction of radiated emissions in component level tests. The radiation from the ground connections between the cables and return plane …
Event-Sampled Direct Adaptive Neural Network Control Of Uncertain Strict-Feedback System With Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Nathan Szanto
Masters Theses
"Neural networks (NNs) are utilized in the backstepping approach to design a control input by approximating unknown dynamics of the strict-feedback nonlinear system with event-sampled inputs. The system state vector is assumed to be unknown and an observer is used to estimate the state vector. By using the estimated state vector and backstepping design approach, an event-sampled controller is introduced. As part of the controller design, first, input-to-state-like stability (ISS) for a continuously sampled controller that has been injected with bounded measurement errors is demonstrated and, subsequently, an event-execution control law is derived such that the measurement errors are guaranteed …

Construction And Validation Of Tl-Ipm Generator, Jamaluddin Mohammad
Masters Theses
"Hydrokinetic energy is one of the potential sources of energy that can be extracted and converted to electrical energy using linear generator. This work discusses about construction and validation of tubular linear internal permanent magnet (TL-IPM) generator, a kind of linear generator. The generator could produce electricity by converting linear motion generated from vortex induced vibrations induced due from a flowing fluid, such as a river. A simulation model of the generator is created using Ansoft's Maxwell software, which uses finite element analysis to perform electromagnetic analysis of the generator. Then a practical generator was built and tested. The results …

Design Methodology For Behavioral Surface Roughness Modeling And High-Speed Test Board Design, Xinyao Guo
Design Methodology For Behavioral Surface Roughness Modeling And High-Speed Test Board Design, Xinyao Guo
Masters Theses
"A behavioral model is introduced, which can predict low-loss and low surface roughness transmission line time- and frequency- domain performances. High data rates push for better performance of PCB transmission lines. However, the roughness of copper foil has a considerable impact on the signal integrity performance of transmission lines at high data rates and long propagation distance. Existing models for low-loss transmission line surface roughness are inadequate. A new behavioral model to represent the surface roughness has been developed. The model is applied in the design process by adding a dispersive term to the bulk dielectric permittivity to represent the …

Managing Risks Of Market Price Uncertainty For A Microgrid Operation, Sriram Raghavan
Managing Risks Of Market Price Uncertainty For A Microgrid Operation, Sriram Raghavan
Masters Theses
"After deregulation of electricity in the United States, the day-ahead and real-time markets allow load serving entities and generation companies to bid and purchase/sell energy under the supervision of the independent system operator (ISO). The electricity market prices are inherently uncertain, and can be highly volatile. The main objective of this thesis is to hedge against the risk from the uncertainty of the market prices when purchasing/selling energy from/to the market. The energy manager can also schedule distributed generators (DGs) and storage of the microgrid to meet the demand, in addition to energy transactions from the market. The risk measure …

Thrust Sensing For Small Uavs, Christopher Scott Marchman
Thrust Sensing For Small Uavs, Christopher Scott Marchman
Masters Theses
"Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become prevalent in both military and civilian applications. UAVs have many size categories from large-scale aircraft to micro air vehicles. The performance, health, and efficiency for UAVs of smaller sizes can be difficult to assess and few associated instrumentation systems have been developed. Thrust measurements on the ground can characterize systems especially when combined with simultaneous motor power measurements. This thesis demonstrates the use of strain measurements to measure the thrust produced by motor/propeller combinations for such small UAVs. A full-bridge Wheatstone circuit and electrical resistance strain gauges were used in conjunction with constant-stress cantilever …

Characterization Of An Integrated Circuit With Respect To Electrostatic Discharge-Induced Soft Failures, Benjamin J. Orr
Doctoral Dissertations
"This research proposal presents a methodology whereby an integrated circuit (IC) can be characterized with respect to soft-failures induced by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)-like events. This methodology uses an exclusively "black-box" approach to determine the response of an IC in a system-level environment, thereby allowing it to be implemented without intimate knowledge of the DUT IC. Results from this methodology can be referenced during system design to raise awareness of specific vulnerabilities of the core system ICs.
During work on this methodology, several sub topics have been explored and developed in the field of system-level ESD. Sections 2 and 3 introduce …

The electric field is detected by an E-field probe made of an open coaxial cable coated with absorbing material. A numerical model is built in …
Study Jitter Amplification Of A Passive Channel And Investigation Of S₂₁ Magnitude Extraction Methodologies Using A Pattern Generator And Oscilloscope, Xinyun Guo
Masters Theses
"Recently the clock channel jitter amplification has been observed in several publications. Currently in many high-speed I/O systems, to avoid the cost and the complex clock recovery circuit design, people use traces forwarding clock signal from transmitting IC to receiving IC. When these clock traces are long enough, the amount of attenuation will induce not only inter-symbol-interference (ISI) but also modulate with the input jitter. Eventually it will lead some type of jitter been amplified after the channel. Similarly, the high speed communication channel (data channel) will also face this issue. Since there are no studies on the jitter amplification …

Doctoral Dissertations
"In this dissertation, novel adaptive/approximate dynamic programming (ADP) based state and output feedback control methods are presented for distributed parameter systems (DPS) which are expressed as uncertain parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) in one and two dimensional domains. In the first step, the output feedback control design using an early lumping method is introduced after model reduction. Subsequently controllers were developed in four stages; Unlike current approaches in the literature, state and output feedback approaches were designed without utilizing model reduction for uncertain linear, coupled nonlinear and two-dimensional parabolic PDEs, respectively. In all of these techniques, the infinite horizon cost …

Application Of Embedded Frequency Selective Surfaces For Structural Health Monitoring, Dustin Franklin Pieper
Masters Theses
"This thesis proposes the use of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) as an embedded structural health monitoring (SHM) sensor. FSSs are periodic arrays of conductive elements that filter certain frequencies of incident electromagnetic radiation. The behavior of this filter is heavily dependent on the geometry of the FSS and local environment. Therefore, by monitoring how this filtering response changes when the geometric or environmental changes take place, information about those changes may be determined. In previous works, FSS-based sensing has shown promise for sensing normal strain (a stretching or compressing geometrical deformation). This concept is extended in this thesis by investigating …
