Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Ching-Cherng Sun, Partha P. Banerjee

Partha Banerjee

The final two papers are concerned with the analysis of novel holograms. Banerjee et al. investigate holographic recording and reconstruction for edge-lit holograms recorded in a 90-degree geometry. Various cases of recording and readout that incorporate propagational diffraction have been modeled. It is shown that the 90-degree geometry can result in beam shaping, as evidenced through preliminary experimental results with photorefractive lithium niobate. Nguyen et al. propose a new approach for designing computer-generated holograms. An artificial neural network is used to initiate the genetic algorithm so that the high computation cost of genetic algorithms for synthesizing holograms is significantly reduced …

Aluminum nanoparticles have been a subject of active investigation in recent years because of their potential to enhance the energy content of energetic materials. The associated kinetics of the chemical reaction and energy release are, in many cases, governed by the properties of the passivation layer protecting the particle rather than those of the underlying metal core. The passivation layer of Al particles is typically an oxide shell several nanometers thick, but other possibilities are now available. We have previously developed synthesis routes to produce air-stable Al nanoparticles that are capped by oleic acid. In the present study, we examine …

Increasing atmospheric CO2 levels have generated much concern, driving the ongoing carbon sequestration effort. A compelling CO2 sequestration option is its photocatalytic conversion to hydrocarbons, for which the use of solar irradiation represents an ultimate solution. Here we report a new strategy of using surface-functionalized small carbon nanoparticles to harvest visible photons for subsequent charge separation on the particle surface in order to drive the efficient photocatalytic process. The aqueous solubility of the catalysts enables photoreduction under more desirable homogeneous reaction conditions. Beyond CO2 conversion, the nanoscale carbon-based photocatalysts are also useful for the photogeneration of H2 from water under …

Spatio-Spectral Sampling And Color Filter Array Design, Keigo Hirakawa, Patrick Wolfe Mar 2016

Spatio-Spectral Sampling And Color Filter Array Design, Keigo Hirakawa, Patrick Wolfe

Keigo Hirakawa

Owing to the growing ubiquity of digital image acquisition and display, several factors must be considered when developing systems to meet future color image processing needs, including improved quality, increased throughput, and greater cost-effectiveness. In consumer still-camera and video applications, color images are typically obtained via a spatial subsampling procedure implemented as a color filter array (CFA), a physical construction whereby only a single component of the color space is measured at each pixel location. Substantial work in both industry and academia has been dedicated to post-processing this acquired raw image data as part of the so-called image processing pipeline, …

Partition-Based Weighted Sum Filters For Image Restoration, Kenneth Barner, Ahmad Sarhan, Russell Hardie May 2015

Partition-Based Weighted Sum Filters For Image Restoration, Kenneth Barner, Ahmad Sarhan, Russell Hardie

Russell C. Hardie

We develop the concept of partitioning the observation space to build a general class of filters referred to as partition-based weighted sum (PWS) filters. In the general framework, each observation vector is mapped to one of M partitions comprising the observation space, and each partition has an associatedfiltering function. We focus on partitioning the observation space utilizing vector quantization and restrict the filtering function within each partition to be linear. In this formulation, a weighted sum of the observation samples forms the estimate, where the weights are allowed to be unique within eachpartition. The partitions are selected and weights tuned …

A New Capacitive Test Structure For Microwave Characterization Of Biopolymers, Carrie M. Bartsch, Guru Subramanyam, James Grote, Frank K. Hopkins, Lawrence L. Brott, Rajesh R. Naik

Guru Subramanyam

A new capacitive test structure, containing a parallel plate capacitor with coplanar waveguide feed lines, was used for microwave characterization of biopolymers for the first time. Microwave dielectric properties were obtained for the biopolymers as a function of dc bias and temperature by performing on-wafer microwave measurements. Dielectric tunability was observed with applied dc bias in the biopolymers tested.

Optimal Scheduling Of A Microgrid With Demand Response Resources, Daniela Proto, Guido Carpinelli, Fabio Mottola

Daniela Proto

A larger penetration of plug-in electric vehicle (EV) fleets and of data centres in the microgrids (μGs) is foreseeable in the near future. Their presence and the presence of distributed generation (DG) units represent a challenge for system operators in that they must identify approaches for using these distributed resources that allow them to operate the grid in a more efficient and economical way. With particular reference to EVs and data centres, it must be noted that they are equipped with storage devices that potentially could result in the modification of the daily load profile of μGs by shifting peak …

Unsteady Mixed Convection In A Porous Media Filled Lid-Driven Cavity Heated By A Semi-Circular Heaters, Saad Mekhilef

Saad Mekhilef

A computational study has been performed on natural convection heat transfer and fluid flow in a porous media filled enclosure with semi-circular heaters by using finite element method. The ceiling of the cavity moves with a constant velocity and it is insulated. Temperature of vertical walls is lower than that of heaters. Results are presented via streamlines, isotherms, average Nusselt numbers and cross sectional velocity for different governing parameters such as Richardson number, Darcy number and dimensionless time. It is observed that both circulation of the flow and heat transfer is strongly affected with time increment and Darcy number inside …

Unsteady Natural Convection In Al2o3–Water Nanoliquid Filled In Isosceles Triangular Enclosure With Sinusoidal Thermal Boundary Condition On Bottom Wall, Saad Mekhilef Dec 2013

Unsteady Natural Convection In Al2o3–Water Nanoliquid Filled In Isosceles Triangular Enclosure With Sinusoidal Thermal Boundary Condition On Bottom Wall, Saad Mekhilef

Saad Mekhilef

Unsteady natural convection heat transfer in an isosceles triangular enclosure filled with Al2O3 nanoparticle is studied by using finite element method. The bottom of the isosceles triangular cavity is heated non-uniformly and temperature of the inclined wall is lower than that of the bottom wall. The governing parameters are Rayleigh number, solid volume fraction, aspect ratio (H/L) of the enclosure and dimensionless-time. It is found that addition of the nanoparticle into base fluid (water) affects both heat transfer and fluid flow. Heat transfer increases with addition of nanoparticle and increasing of Rayleigh number. Conduction mode of heat transfer becomes dominant …

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo Dec 2013

A Sensitivity Analysis Toolkit For The Simplification Of Mv Distribution Network Voltage Management, Fabian Tamp, Philip Ciufo

Dr Philip Ciufo

As distribution networks become increasingly variable and generation becomes increasingly decentralised, voltage standards are becoming more liable to violation. Accordingly, intelligent voltage management strategies are required to enable standards compliance without unduly increasing network maintenance or infrastructure costs. The relationship between network power and voltages, however, is complex, non-linear and interdependent, and thus is difficult to conceptualise and use for decision-making and control purposes.

This paper introduces a software toolkit that simplifies the development of voltage management strategies by the applica- tion of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis reduces complex network P – Q – |V | relationships to simple linear …

Voltage Unbalance Emission Assessment In Interconnected Power Systems, Upuli Jayatunga, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar Dec 2012

Voltage Unbalance Emission Assessment In Interconnected Power Systems, Upuli Jayatunga, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar

Dr Philip Ciufo

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Report IEC/TR 61000-3-13:2008 considers voltage unbalance (VU) emission assessment as a key aspect of the VU management of power systems. Compliance assessment of unbalanced installations at the post connection stage is essential to ensure that the limits set by the IEC VU emission allocation methodology in the pre-connection stage are met. Although, VU is known to be caused by load asymmetries and inherent network asymmetries, locating all VU emission sources is not a straightforward process, especially in a network with interconnections. Such assessment methodologies should ensure that the contributions from various sources of unbalance …

Point Of Common Coupling (Pcc) Voltage Control Of A Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic (Pv) System, Brian Perera, Philip Ciufo, Sarath Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

In future low voltage grids, with multiple inverter interfaced sources connected, voltage regulation may become a necessary task. The potential exists for inverter interfaced sources to be deployed to regulate the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) of each inverter interfaced sources. The PCC voltage regulation is attainable with inverter interfaced sources by dynamically controlling the amount of reactive power injected to the power distribution grid by individual systems. In the current research, a closed-loop controller is proposed to regulate the PCC voltage of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system that is connected to a single-phase power distribution feeder …
