Local Control Of Crows By Trapping, C J. Woodbury Jan 1961

Local Control Of Crows By Trapping, C J. Woodbury

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE common crow seen frequently around farms in the South-West is the raven (Corvus coronoides) whilst the pest of pastoral areas is the true Australian crow (Corvus cecilae).

Farmers and pastoralists, although recognising the importance of these birds as scavengers and destroyers of insects, particularly grasshoppers, sometimes for one reason or another, wish to reduce their numbers over a localised area.

Baiting with phosphorus has been used in the past, but the purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate a type of trap which has become universally known as the "Australian Crow Trap."

A Crush For Tuberculin Testing Of Cattle, A L. Ripper Jan 1961

A Crush For Tuberculin Testing Of Cattle, A L. Ripper

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALWAYS a useful asset on any farm where livestock are kept, a strongly-constructed crush is essential where tuberculin testing makes it necessary to deal with dry stock, bulls and young animals that have not been previously handled.

The crush described in this article was specially designed for tuberculin testing, but will serve equally well for vaccinating, branding, de-horning or any operation where restraint is necessary.

A New Type Of Seed Bed Cover For The Market Garden, R R. Bell, M. Hardie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALL market gardeners use seed beds in their gardening programme. However, the basic design of seed beds and covers has not greatly altered over the years.

The availability of cheap good quality plastic materials has now shown the way to improvements in the design of this type of gardening equipment.

Let's Look At Herringbone Dairies, R A. Bettenay, F. Fielder Jan 1961

Let's Look At Herringbone Dairies, R A. Bettenay, F. Fielder

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE first of the modern type herringbone dairies in Western Australia was constructed by Mr. F. Tucker of Ruabon, in 1957.

Since then there has been strong interest in this system, and there are now at least six such sheds operating in the district between Ludlow and Augusta. Many more are being constructed.

Overcoming Stock Watering Problems In The Kimberleys, B Swan Jan 1960

Overcoming Stock Watering Problems In The Kimberleys, B Swan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the ever-present problems of the pastoral areas is that of providing: watering-points in reasonably close proximity to the grazing areas.

All too frequently, the country on the river frontages and that in the vicinity of the water-holes becomes eaten out and although there may be ample feed on other portions of the run, it is too far distant from the available water to be effectively utilised.

A Useful Farm-Made Roller, V E. Western Jan 1960

A Useful Farm-Made Roller, V E. Western

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A very serviceable compacting roller can be constructed at little expense by using discarded truck tyres.

The roller described here has an overall width of 5 ft. 3 in. and carries seven 9.00 x 24 semi-trailer tyres which had been discarded when the treads were worn smooth.

Irrigation In Western Australia : Report On Government-Controlled Areas : 1958-59, H K. Gibsone

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IRRIGATION in the south-western portion of Western Australia is mainly confined to the coastal plain west of the Darling Range where the three main irrigation districts of Harvey, Collie and Waroona have been established by the State Government.

The Government-controlled irrigation areas extend southward from Waroona (70 miles from Perth) to Dardanup (120 miles from Perth) and have an average width of about five miles.

The Burnett Control Gate For Irrigation Channels, B Swan Jan 1960

The Burnett Control Gate For Irrigation Channels, B Swan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THIS type of check-gate for use in irrigation ditches, was evolved on the Kimberley Research Station and has definite advantages over wooden or concrete structures in that it is termite-proof and can be removed and replaced in a few minutes to permit of the channel being cleaned out by straight runs with modern machinery.

Shearing Shed Design, W L. Mcgarry, D. A. Young, M. Butler Jan 1960

Shearing Shed Design, W L. Mcgarry, D. A. Young, M. Butler

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PLANNING the layout of a shearing shed requires a good deal of thought to ensure its maximum working efficiency.

If the contemplated structure is to serve the dual purpose of storage-shearing shed, it is better to plan a shearing shed that can be used for storage, rather than a storage shed with a view to its utilisation as a shearing shed.

Location And Economic Study For Interstate Route Tallahassee, Wilbur Smith And Associates Nov 1957

Location And Economic Study For Interstate Route Tallahassee, Wilbur Smith And Associates

City and Regional Planning -- Florida

The basic purpose of the study was to determine the best location for the construction of an East-West section of the interstate highway. It was prescribed that the work would consist of two basic parts. One had to do with the analysis of travel data, both present and projected, in the determination of the most feasible location of a route based on conventional traffic and highway development factors. The other phase of the work was to deal with economic considerations, especially the economic impact of the proposed routes on businesses located on existing roads and on the central business district …

A Plane Coordinate System For Bernalillo County, Karl V. Morin May 1953

A Plane Coordinate System For Bernalillo County, Karl V. Morin

Civil Engineering ETDs

The first purpose of this thesis is to frame an enabling act that could be submitted to legislature for adoption. Such an act would authorize the use of plane coordinate system, but not make it mandatory. Twenty-four states have passed laws establishing state coordinate systems.

A second purpose of this thesis is to provide practicing engineers with all the necessary information and explanatory material in one manuscript to permit them to apply the system to their work. An example is worked out in detail using local points known to local men and fully explained step by step.
