This thesis quantitatively investigates the waveform similarity of micro-earthquakes detected during the Tony Creek Dual Microseismic Experiment (ToC2ME) located in Fox Creek, Alberta. Subsurface anthropogenic activities, especially processes involving injection, can lead to accumulation of porepressure and elastic strain in the geologic formations and rocks, resulting in induced earthquakes. Four hydraulic-fracturing treatment wells were drilled and completed in the study area. The microseismic acquisition system monitored continuous seismic waveforms from 25 October to 15 December 2016 revealing 21619 hydraulic fracture-related events with magnitude ranging from Mw -1 to 3.2. Massive developed discontinuities are the salient geological features of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, and the hydraulic fractures’ capabilities of crossing the discontinuities concern the stimulation effects of hydraulic fracturing. To study the development of the fracture process zone (FPZ) when the hydraulic fracture orthogonally propagates through a discontinuity, the self-designed visual fracturing equipment was adopted to carry out hydraulic fracturing tests on sandstone plates with a prefabricated unbounded friction interface. Predicting the initiation pressure of hydraulic fracturing is of great significance for oil and gas exploitation, in-situ stress measurement, and anti-cracking design of hydraulic structures. In this paper, the discontinuous numerical simulation method of particle discrete element combined with domain–pipe flow model is applied considering the fluid–solid coupling. Based on the front-advancing method, the granular model with a regular-shaped borehole is generated to analyze the meso cracking process and initiation pressure of hydraulic fracturing. This dissertation consists of two major parts: Firstly, experimental investigation of four major shale softening mechanisms and quantifications of structural parameters. Secondly, numerical simulations of nano-scale flow behaviors using the previous experiments determined parameters based on modified pore network modeling.
Hydraulic fracturing is widely applied to economical gas production from shale reservoirs. Still, the gradual swelling of the clay micro/nano-pores due to retained fluid from hydraulic fracturing causes a gradual reduction of gas production. Hydraulic fracturing is a well-stimulation technique that is employed in field applications, such as enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and shale oil/gas extraction. This research experimentally investigates the effect of the state of stress and injection rate on the hydraulic fracturing processes. In addition, a displacement discontinuity method (DDM) code, FROCK, is used to model the crack initiation and propagation in a granite specimen under hydraulic fracturing conditions. : This study investigated the impact of overburden height on the hydraulic fracturing of a concrete-lined pressure tunnel, excavated in intact rock, under steady-state and transient-state conditions. Moreover, the Norwegian design criterion that only suggests increasing the overburden height as a countermeasure against hydraulic fracturing was evaluated. The Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion was implemented to investigate failure in the rock elements adjacent to the lining. A pressure tunnel with an inner diameter of 3.6 m was modeled in Abaqus Finite Element Analysis (FEA), using the finite element method (FEM). Hydraulic fracturing has promoted the exploitation of natural gas in the United States (U.S.). However, the storing and emptying of chemical additives in hydraulic fracturing wells may pose adverse effects through inhalation exposures. Based on the information about hydraulic fracturing fluids, this study investigated: 1) water volumes used to mix chemical additives for making up the hydraulic fracturing fluids; 2) chemical species, concentrations and their degradability in the hydraulic fracturing fluids; 3) emissions of organics from chemical storage tanks; and 4) the occupational inhalation exposures by toxic and organic vapors.

Hydraulic fracturing has allowed natural gas to become a viable energy source via extraction of unconventional shale reserves, but this process requires an enormous amount of water. To ensure a productive fracture, a proprietary blend of chemical additives is added to the water. In this research, a hydraulic fracturing chemical additive – an enzyme breaking agent – is analyzed for organic components using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Hydraulic fracturing creates large volumes of produced water, contaminated with organics, suspended solids, and dissolved minerals. This water must either be disposed of in injection wells or treated for reuse. One option is to use a combination of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration to treat this water and reuse it in future hydraulic fracturing wells. The object of this study was to test and characterize commercial nanofiltration membranes. The work done for this project will lead to future work in modifying membranes to improve the rejection of desired components.

This Conference is presented by the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy, and the Environment, in conjunction with the Air-Water-Gas Sustainability Research Network. Technological advances for extracting oil and gas from shale deposits have ushered in a new era of energy development in key resource-rich pockets throughout the US.
