”The hydration of multi-phase ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and its pure phase derivatives, such as tricalcium silicate (C3S) and belite (ß-C2S), are studied in the context varying process parameters -- for instance, variable water content, water activity, superplasticizer structure and dose, and mineral additive type and particle size. These parameters are studied by means of physical experiments and numerical/computational techniques, such as: thermodynamic estimations; numerical kinetic-based modelling; and artificial intelligence techniques like machine learning (ML) models. In the past decade, numerical kinetic modeling has greatly improved in terms of fitting experimental, isothermal calorimetry to kinetic-based modelling …

Bond Behavior Of Advanced Fiber Reinforced Composite-Concrete Joints, Xingxing Zou Jan 2020

Bond Behavior Of Advanced Fiber Reinforced Composite-Concrete Joints, Xingxing Zou

Doctoral Dissertations

“Externally bonding advanced composite materials to concrete structures is an effective way to improve their strength, ductility, and durability. The interfacial bond behavior is fundamental to understand the overall structural performance of concrete structures strengthened with advanced composite materials. This study includes a comprehensive investigation of the bond behavior of composite-concrete joints with different fiber reinforced composite types. First, a direct approach to determine the bond-slip relationship for fiber reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM)-concrete joints based on fiber strain measurements was proposed. Then, an analytical solution to predict the full-range response of FRCM-concrete joints was derived by assuming a trilinear bond-slip …

Complexities Observed During The Development Of A Rheological Testing Procedure For Small Cement Paste Samples, Aida Margarita Ley-Hernandez

Doctoral Dissertations

“Rheology has been widely used to describe the flow properties of fresh cement-based suspensions. The use of a rheometer to characterize these properties is not a straightforward task due to the dependency to different preparation conditions, mixing processes, testing procedures and measuring instruments employed. In addition, shear and time dependency of the material which undergoes chemical and physical particle bonding, caused by hydration of cement and flocculation. Nevertheless, the characterization and understanding of the rheological behavior of cement-based materials have become essential with the recent introduction of novel applications like digital construction in the field of civil engineering, among others. …

Use Of Wicking Geotextile To Dehydrate Road Embankments, Chuang Lin Jan 2019

Use Of Wicking Geotextile To Dehydrate Road Embankments, Chuang Lin

Doctoral Dissertations

“Excess water within a pavement structure is the major cause of pavement deteriorations. A roadway is often constructed with soils compacted at the optimum water contents to achieve the best performance. After construction, the soil water content variation is controlled by the ambient environment. The base course aggregate is very sensitive to water content variations. Unfortunately, conventional drainage system can only drain gravity water, but not capillary water, and it cannot work under unsaturated conditions. Consequently, no matter how well the road is constructed, the water content is expected to increase with time and the excess water will inevitably accelerate …

Dynamic Impact Induced By Tornadoes Through Simulations Based On Two-Way Wind-Structure Interactions, Tiantian Li Jan 2019

Dynamic Impact Induced By Tornadoes Through Simulations Based On Two-Way Wind-Structure Interactions, Tiantian Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"Tornadoes have become a significant cause of property damage, injuries and life losses. Investigations of tornadoes indicate that most fatalities were caused by building failure. For example, in the Joplin, MO tornado of 22 May 2011, 161 people were killed, and 84% fatalities were related to building failure. Therefore, it is imperative to develop science-based tornado-resistant building codes, in order to provide a better level of occupant protection from tornadoes and to minimize the tornado-induced damage. This requires in-depth understanding of the wind characteristics of tornadoes and their wind effects on civil structures, based on which design tornadic wind loading …

Development Of Lidar Assisted Terrestrial Radar Interferometry For Rock Deformation Monitoring, Ricardo Javier Romero Ramirez Jan 2019

Development Of Lidar Assisted Terrestrial Radar Interferometry For Rock Deformation Monitoring, Ricardo Javier Romero Ramirez

Doctoral Dissertations

"Rock and soil slope movements cost millions of dollars annually. During the past few decades, engineers have relied on traditional methods to detect slope movements. These tools are valuable for small spatial areas but, may not be adequate or cost effective for large spatial areas. Remote sensing methods such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and terrestrial radar interferometry (TRI) provide excellent spatial coverage, and with adequate post-data-processing software, sub-millimetric scale deformation sensitivity can be achieved.

This work will present a comparative experimental study between TLS and TRI. The comparative experimental study will allow us to achieve the two main objectives …

The Mechanics Of Precision Presplitting, Anthony Joseph Konya Jan 2019

The Mechanics Of Precision Presplitting, Anthony Joseph Konya

Doctoral Dissertations

"Precision Presplitting is a widely used method of presplit blasting for the mining and construction industries. In recent years considerable effort has gone into the development of empirical equations based on field data to be able to better design the Precision Presplit for various rock types and structural environments. However, the most widely discussed theory about the mechanics of the presplit formation, that of shockwave collisions, does not appear to be applicable for this method of presplitting.

This research has disproven this theory based on insufficient magnitude of the shockwave from modeling with basic wave mechanics. Other authors have suggested …

Detection And Elimination Of Rock Face Vegetation From Terrestrial Lidar Data Using The Virtual Articulating Conical Probe Algorithm, Kenneth John Boyko

Doctoral Dissertations

"A common use of terrestrial lidar is to conduct studies involving change detection of natural or engineered surfaces. Change detection involves many technical steps beyond the initial data acquisition: data structuring, registration, and elimination of data artifacts such as parallax errors, near-field obstructions, and vegetation. Of these, vegetation detection and elimination with terrestrial lidar scanning (TLS) presents a completely different set of issues when compared to vegetation elimination from aerial lidar scanning (ALS). With ALS, the ground footprint of the lidar laser beam is very large, and the data acquisition hardware supports multi-return waveforms. Also, the underlying surface topography is …

Therefore, the localization and movement of smart rocks were …

Smart Rocks For Bridge Scour Monitoring -- Design And Localization Using Electromagnetic Techniques And Embedded Orientation Sensors, Andro Radchenko Jan 2017

Smart Rocks For Bridge Scour Monitoring -- Design And Localization Using Electromagnetic Techniques And Embedded Orientation Sensors, Andro Radchenko

Doctoral Dissertations

"River bridge scour is an erosion process in which flowing water removes sediment materials (such as sand, rocks) from a bridge foundation, river beds and banks. As a result, the level of the river bed near a bridge pier is lowering such that the bridge foundation stability can be compromised, and the bridge can collapse. The scour is a dynamic process, which can accelerate rapidly during a flood event. Thus, regular monitoring of the scour progress is necessary to be performed at most river bridges. Present techniques are usually expensive, require large man/hour efforts, and often lack the real-time monitoring …

Durability Behavior Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer And Steel Reinforced Polymer For Infrastructure Applications, Wei Wang Jan 2017

Durability Behavior Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer And Steel Reinforced Polymer For Infrastructure Applications, Wei Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Crack development in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is common in elements such as bridge decks. However, these cracks can impose significant problems over time, because they allow chlorides from deicing chemicals to infiltrate concrete which will then corrode steel bars as RC structures are exposed to harsh weather. In the last decade, composite reinforcement systems are internally or externally applied to concrete structures instead of traditional steel reinforcing bars, or to strengthen concrete elements in flexure and shear. However, studies regarding the long-term durability performance of composite reinforcement systems is limited. Therefore, in order to popularize the application of these …
