Mechanical Characteristics Of Organically Modified Fly Ash-Kaolinite Mixtures, Xin Kang Jan 2015

Mechanical Characteristics Of Organically Modified Fly Ash-Kaolinite Mixtures, Xin Kang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Fly ash is a hazardous waste material to the environment. Beneficial reuse of fly ash, however, brings economic and environmental benefits, i.e., decreases the cost of disposal, reduces greenhouse gas emission, and improves mechanical properties of construction materials. Due to the lack of pozzolanic properties, the reuse rate of Class F fly ash in geotechnical engineering is relatively low (ACAA 2013). In order to promote the effectiveness and sustainability of high volume reuse of class F fly ash in geotechnical engineering, biopolymers (Chitosan, and Xanthan gum) and synthetic polymers (Polyethylene Oxide, PEO) were used instead of the traditional stabilizers to …

Through the roots, plants also exude and uptake numerous chemicals. Many of the pathways can also be used by environmental contaminants to be translocated to above ground plant tissues. Such uptake of contaminants has proven useful in remediation and phytoscreening - the use of plants to delineate contaminant plumes. Sampling of trees at contaminated field sites has been used to identify areas of groundwater contaminated with a variety of chlorinated solvents. The use of plants as contaminant biosensors requires …

A Unified Bond Theory, Probabilistic Meso-Scale Modeling, And Experimental Validation Of Deformed Steel Rebar In Normal Strength Concrete, Chenglin Wu Jan 2014

A Unified Bond Theory, Probabilistic Meso-Scale Modeling, And Experimental Validation Of Deformed Steel Rebar In Normal Strength Concrete, Chenglin Wu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Bond between deformed rebar and concrete is affected by rebar deformation pattern, concrete properties, concrete confinement, and rebar-concrete interfacial properties. Two distinct groups of bond models were traditionally developed based on the dominant effects of concrete splitting and near-interface shear-off failures. Their accuracy highly depended upon the test data sets selected in analysis and calibration. In this study, a unified bond model is proposed and developed based on an analogy to the indentation problem around the rib front of deformed rebar. This mechanics-based model can take into account the combined effect of concrete splitting and interface shear-off failures, resulting in …

"Concrete is the most widely used man-made material in the world. Like other materials, it has been improved over time. Nowadays, with continued development of science and technology, a new generation of concretes is produced and is termed high performance concretes. A review of previously published work indicates that very few studies (in some cases none) have addressed the structural behavior of full-scale, high performance concrete elements. This study investigated the shear and fracture behavior of two types of high performance concrete - high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) and self-consolidating concrete (SCC). The HVFAC incorporates up to 70% cement replacement …

Numerical Analyses Of Long Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete Panels Exposed To Dynamic Loading, Zahra Sadat Tabatabaei Jan 2013

Numerical Analyses Of Long Carbon Fiber Reinforced Concrete Panels Exposed To Dynamic Loading, Zahra Sadat Tabatabaei

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this research was to evaluate impact and blast performance of long carbon fiber reinforced concrete experimentally and numerically. Experimental tests were conducted on plain concrete (PC), reinforced concrete, and four different types of long carbon fiber reinforced concrete (LCFRC). The results from each test were then compared to one another. This comparison indicates that adding long carbon fibers to concrete both increases the post-cracking behavior of concrete and decreases the spalls in either an impact or blast test. Among all of the fibers tested, Fiber Type B3 outperformed the other fibers, absorbing more energy during impact. Numerical …

Characterization Of Expanded Polystyrene (Eps) And Cohesive Soil Mixtures, Nicholas Thomas Rocco Jan 2012

Characterization Of Expanded Polystyrene (Eps) And Cohesive Soil Mixtures, Nicholas Thomas Rocco

Doctoral Dissertations

"Soils modified with expanded polystyrene (EPS) particulates could be used as lightweight fill in a variety of installations including slopes for improved stability, embankments over compressible soils, and to reduce earth pressures next to structures. The addition of low density EPS particulates into soil has a large effect on the mass and volumetric characteristics of these mixtures and their influence on mechanical properties is scarce in the literature. A laboratory characterization program using clay mixed with EPS particulates was conducted for different dosages of EPS. Soils were modified with up to 1.5% EPS by mass, which corresponds to approximately 45% …

Shear And Fracture Behavior Of High-Volume Fly Ash Reinforced Concrete For Sustainable Construction, Carlos Andres Ortega Ordonez Jan 2012

Shear And Fracture Behavior Of High-Volume Fly Ash Reinforced Concrete For Sustainable Construction, Carlos Andres Ortega Ordonez

Doctoral Dissertations

"Concrete is the most widely used man-made material on the planet. Unfortunately, producing Portland cement generates carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) at roughly a pound for pound ratio. High-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete- concrete with at least 50% of the cement replaced with fly ash - offers a potential "green" solution. However, because it is still relatively new and has some disadvantages, there are still many questions that need to be answered. Most research to date has consisted only of the evaluation of the strength and durability of HVFA concrete mixtures, while only a limited number of studies have implemented …

Nitrification Performance Of Activated Sludge Under Low Dissolved Oxygen Conditions, Guoqiang Liu Jan 2012

Nitrification Performance Of Activated Sludge Under Low Dissolved Oxygen Conditions, Guoqiang Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"The combined effects of solids retention time (SRT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on nitrification, nitrifying bacterial communities, and aeration needs in the activated sludge process were studied. Nitrification was almost completed in the 10, 20, and 40-day SRT reactors with a minimum DO of 0.37, 0.25, and 0.16 mg/L, respectively. Under long-term low DO conditions, the endogenous decay of nitrifiers was slowed down and then nitirfier biomass concentration increased, thereby reducing the adverse effect of low DO on nitrification. Under long-term low DO conditions, the oxygen affinity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) increased significantly and as a result, NOB became …

A Progressive Collapse Evaluation Of Steel Structures In High Temperature Environment With Optical Fiber Sensors, Ying Huang Jan 2012

A Progressive Collapse Evaluation Of Steel Structures In High Temperature Environment With Optical Fiber Sensors, Ying Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the process of a progressive failure of steel structures in a post-earthquake fire, real-time assessment and prediction of structural behaviors are of paramount significance to an emergency evacuation and rescue effort. However, existing measurement technologies cannot provide the needed critical data such as large strains at high temperature. To bridge this gap, a novel optical fiber sensor network and an adaptive multi-scale finite element model (FEM) are proposed and developed in this study. The sensor network consists of long period fiber gratings (LPFG) sensors and extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) sensors or their integration. Each sensor is designed with a …

Prediction And Performance Of Single Piles In Clay Soils Under Vibratory Loadings, Domenica Cambio Jan 2012

Prediction And Performance Of Single Piles In Clay Soils Under Vibratory Loadings, Domenica Cambio

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study developed a model for predicting the response, in terms of amplitude versus frequency of single piles under lateral vibratory loadings embedded in clay or fine silty soils. The model incorporates frequency dependent parameters and the effects of soil non-linearity through the relationship between soil shear modulus and damping with strain. A computer program, Dyna5, was used to generate the computed response of single piles using the Novak and El-Shamouby (1983) approach. Soil non-linearity was accounted for by incorporating spline interpolation routine into Dyna5. Sliding and coupled rocking vibrations were addressed. The computed responses were predicted and compared with …

Hilbert Transform Applications In Signal Analysis And Non-Parametric Identification Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Zuocai Wang Jan 2011

Hilbert Transform Applications In Signal Analysis And Non-Parametric Identification Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Zuocai Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Hilbert Huang Transform faces several challenges in dealing with closely-spaced frequency components, short-time and weak disturbances, and interrelationships between two time-varying modes of nonlinear vibration due to its mixed mode problem associated with empirical mode decomposition (EMD). To address these challenges, analytical mode decomposition (AMD) based on Hilbert Transform is proposed and developed for an adaptive data analysis of both stationary and non-stationary responses. With a suite of predetermined bisecting frequencies, AMD can analytically extract the individual components of a structural response between any two bisecting frequencies and function like an adaptive bandpass filter that can deal with frequency-modulated responses …
