The object of this test was to determine experimentally, the live load stresses in the main members of the Racine Street Bridge, and thus to ascertain whether or not the theoretical live and dead load stresses were greater or less than the theoretical dead load plus the actual live load stresses. If less, the bridge could not be considered safe for the traffic which it now carries.
