International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Alkali silica reaction (ASR) is one of the most important factors of deterioration of Concrete. However, there are a lot of unknown points about ASR such as mechanism of ASR and pessimum effect. We investigate to the mechanism of Alkali silica chemical reaction by using two different aggregates, early type expanded aggregate and delayed type expanded aggregate. Experiments were used to investigate ASR by reaction between reactive silica and alkali ions with or without calcium ions. Two phases of reacted samples (liquid and solid) are presented. In the absence of calcium hydroxide (CH), reactive materials with specified sizes (Yorochert, and …

Effects Of Electro-Osmotic Consolidation Of Clays And Its Improvement Using Ion Exchange Membranes, Lucas Martin

Electro-osmosis is an established method of expediting consolidation of soft, saturated clayey soils compared to commonly used methods, such as preloading with wick drains. In electro-osmotic consolidation a direct current (DC) is applied via inserted electrodes. This causes hydrated ions in the interstitial fluid to migrate to oppositely charged electrodes. Because the clay particles have a negative surface charge, the majority of ions in the interstitial fluid are positively charged. Therefore, the net flow will be towards the negatively charged electrode (cathode), where the water can be removed and thus consolidation is achieved. Certain problems, such as pH changes in …

For characterizing the polymer modified binders, different state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) use different time consuming and empirical Performance Grade (PG) Plus test methods. Furthermore, the PG Plus tests are silent when asphalt binders are modified with chemicals such as polyphosphoric acid (PPA). But, the effects of the elastomeric or plastomeric polymer are not accurately identified through these conventional tests such as Elastic Recovery (ER) and tenacity. Thus, the main research goal of this study is to recommend alternative test method(s), which can possibly be pursued by using a commonly available device, a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). Three PG binders …
