In this study, the denim fiber scraps were reused as an alternative low-cost sorbent for the removal of heavy metals Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and arsenic from aqueous solutions. Results showed that this textile waste was an effective sorbent for the removal of these heavy metal ions and offered a better removal performance than those reported for other synthetic and natural sorbents such as activated carbons and zeolites. On the other hand, raw and metal-loaded denim wastes were also useful for the removal of arsenic (V) from aqueous solutions and their sorption capacities were higher than 1.5 mg/g. In particular, the …

Analysis And Modeling Of Multicomponent Sorption Of Heavy Metals On Chicken Feathers Using Taguchi’S Experimental Designs And Artificial Neural Networks, Hilda Elizabeth Reynel-Avila, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Guadalupe De La Rosa

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

In this study, we have used an integrated approach based on Taguchi’s experimental designs and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the analysis and modeling of the simultaneous removal of cadmium (Cd2+), nickel (Ni2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions from ternary aqueous solutions using chicken feathers. Our results indicated that the multicomponent sorption of these heavy metals on chicken feathers is a complex antagonistic process. Specifically, chicken feathers showed a strong preference for the removal of Pb2+ ions in multicomponent solutions and the presence of these ions affected significantly the multicomponent removal of Cd2+ and Ni2+. This antagonistic sorption effect is more …

This study introduces the bio-inspired computation method namely Cuckoo Search (CS) as a parameter estimation method for modeling the mean activity coefficients of quaternary ammonium aqueous ionic liquids using the e-NRTL model. CS has not been used before to address this particular parameter estimation problem. Our calculations showed that the CS method was robust to perform the data modeling of this thermodynamic property of ionic liquids and that it can offer a global success rate of  90% for solving this challenging thermodynamic problem. CS offers a better performance than those obtained using other stochastic optimization methods such as simulated …

This study describes a new synthesis route for bone chars using a CO2 atmosphere and their behavior as adsorbent for fluoride removal from water. Specifically, we have performed a detailed analysis of the adsorption properties of bone char samples obtained at different carbonization conditions and a comparative study with samples of bone char obtained via pyrolysis under nitrogen. Experimental results show that the nature of the gas atmosphere (CO2 versus N2) and the carbonization temperature play a major role to achieve an effective bone char for water defluoridation. In particular, the best adsorption properties of bone char for fluoride removal …

Process Alternatives For Biobutanol Purification: Design And Optimization, Eduardo Sánchez-Ramírez, Juan José Quiroz-Ramírez, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández, Salvador Hérnandez, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Biobutanol is primarily used as a solvent or component in surface coatings. It has characteristics similar to petroleum fuel and is considered as a superior biofuel to ethanol. Biobutanol is more energy dense and less hygroscopic than ethanol, resulting in higher possible blending ratios with gasoline. Development of technologies for biobutanol production by fermentation has resulted in higher final biobutanol concentrations, less fermentation by-products and higher volumetric productivities during fermentation, together with less energy intensive separation and purification techniques. These new technological developments have the potential to provide a production process for biobutanol that is economically viable in comparison to …

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Aminated copolymers of polyacrylonitrile-graft-chitosan (APANCS) were synthesized via the reaction of copolymers of polyacrylonitrile-graft-chitosan (PAN-g-CS) with diethylenetriamine in solution. Specifically, copolymers of PAN-g-CS have been obtained via a graft polymerization method using acrylonitrile (AN), chitosan (CS) and a free-radical initiating process with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as initiator under air presence. Superficial structure of these copolymers was modified using amination reactions to introduce amine groups on its polymeric matrix. This polymer (APANCS) was applied in the removal of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions in aqueous solutions. Samples of PAN-g-CS and APANCS were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray …

Makha – A New Hybrid Swarm Intelligence Global Optimization Algorithm, Ahmed M.E. Khalil, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

The search for efficient and reliable bio-inspired optimization methods continues to be an active topic of research due to the wide application of the developed methods. In this study, we developed a reliable and efficient optimization method via the hybridization of two bio-inspired swarm intelligence optimization algorithms, namely, the Monkey Algorithm (MA) and the Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA). The hybridization made use of the efficient steps in each of the two original algorithms and provided a better balance between the exploration/diversification steps and the exploitation/intensification steps. The new hybrid algorithm, MAKHA, was rigorously tested with 27 benchmark problems and its …

Assessment Of Naproxen Adsorption On Bone Char In Aqueous Solutions Using Batch And Fixed-Bed Processes, Hilda Elizabeth Reynel-Avila, Didilia I. Mendoza-Castillo, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Joaquín Silvestre-Albero

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

An integrated analysis of naproxen adsorption on bone char in batch and packed-bed column conditions has been performed. Kinetics, thermodynamic and breakthrough parameters have been calculated using adsorption models and artificial neural networks. Results show that naproxen removal using bone char in batch conditions is a feasible and effective process, which could involve electrostatic and non-electrostatic interactions depending mainly on pH conditions. However, the application of packed-bed column for naproxen adsorption on bone char is not effective for the treatment of diluted solutions due to the low degree of adsorbent utilization (below 4%) at tested operating conditions. The proposed mechanism …

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

In the last years, the industries have shown interest in the development of reactive separation processes. Reactive distillation can be considered as reaction and distillation combined into one new unit operation and this integrated separation process is a good example of process intensification. This intensified process offers several important advantages that include the increment of the reaction yield and selectivity, the overcoming of thermodynamic restrictions and the considerable reduction in energy, water and solvent consumptions. Therefore, this process configuration has been applied in several chemical industries. However, due to the strong interactions of chemical reactions and heat and mass transfer, …
