Location Based Services - A Bridge Too Far For Data Linkage And Behaviour Under Security And Privacy Concerns?, Marcus R. Wigan
Location Based Services - A Bridge Too Far For Data Linkage And Behaviour Under Security And Privacy Concerns?, Marcus R. Wigan
Marcus R Wigan
Location-based services (LBS) are dependent on a knowledge of a real time location, knowledge of the environment, and integrated with communications. An ideal specification for travel data collection. LBS has become pervasive very swiftly, but the implications are not yet widely recognised. The addition of realtime information, response and service providers to the now familiar combination of GPS, and data recording is the focus of the present paper. The business development path to LBS is outlined, and the implications for data gathering, matching and response considered. The privacy and surveillance aspects are of varying sensitivity in different cultures, even within …

The Corporate Assault On Democracy, Sharon Beder
The Corporate Assault On Democracy, Sharon Beder
Sharon Beder
The revolutionary shift that we are witnessing at the beginning of the 21st Century from democracy to corporate rule is as significant as the shift from monarchy to democracy, which ushered in the modern age of nation states. It represents a wholesale change in cultural values and aspirations.
Barriers To Rfid Adoption In The Supply Chain, Nick Huber, Katina Michael, Luke Mccathie
Barriers To Rfid Adoption In The Supply Chain, Nick Huber, Katina Michael, Luke Mccathie
Professor Katina Michael
This paper explores the current barriers to adoption of radio-frequency identification (RFID) for supply chain applications, and documents the perceptions of key players in the Australian RFID market. The paper contains data collected from interviews of both technology providers (e.g. RFID vendors), and prospective business customer (i.e. a large retailer). Data collected is analyzed using qualitative content analysis, and supported with figures and tables. The findings show that the three main barriers to RFID adoption are: the cost of RFID implementation (especially ongoing tag costs), lack of customer awareness and education, and a technology which is only at the beginning …
Vendor Perceptions Of How Rfid Can Minimize Product Shrinkage In The Retail Supply Chain, N. Huber, Katina Michael
Vendor Perceptions Of How Rfid Can Minimize Product Shrinkage In The Retail Supply Chain, N. Huber, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
The objective of this paper is to investigate product shrinkage in the retail supply chain, and to consider how radio frequency identification (RFID) could act as a partial solution toward a retailer’s loss prevention strategy. The research uses semi-structured interviews to collect data, and a qualitative content analysis to present the results. Given that the number of RFID deployments in the retail supply chain is limited, RFID vendors, resellers, and associations are instead used to gather the current value propositions. Representatives from nine Australian RFID vendors and associations were interviewed in August and September of 2006. The results indicate that …
Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge
Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge

Many global organizations are beginning to see the productivity indicators for their translation and localization processes reach a plateau. That’s an inevitable fact even for those organizations that use what’s currently billed as the latest and greatest in translation technology, such as translation memory with automated workflow components or globalization management systems. Even with these tools in place, making content available in multiple languages remains a very expensive and time-consuming proposition. For those looking for ways to reduce the cost of translation to the point where almost all materials that should be translation actually can be translated, controlled language may …

A Project for a Professional Degree submitted to The Faculty of School of Engineering and Applied Science of The George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Applied Scientist of Engineering Management May 21, 2006
On October 10, 2000, The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000 or DMA 2K) (Public Law 106-390) was enacted, amending the Robert T. Stafford Relief and Emergency Assistance Act and established new requirements for the national for hazard mitigation planning. States, Tribes, territories, and local governments now must have an approved mitigation plan in place prior to receiving certain …

Citizen Based Public Health Surveillance, Monitoring And Post-Event Assessments, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii
Citizen Based Public Health Surveillance, Monitoring And Post-Event Assessments, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii
Thomas Lyons (Thom) Carr III Appl.Sc., CEM
When a sudden on-set emergency or disaster affects a region or the whole country, communities and neighborhoods should plan for the possibility that emergency and other civic services will be disrupted and unavailable (District of Columbia 2003a, 2003b, 2004; Doyle 2004; Siskiyou County Public Health/NorCalBT.com 2004). The event may be severe enough that the routine public health surveillance and monitoring system will be disrupted or the system will not be able to provide data quickly enough to support state and local decisionmaking. A temporary post-disaster system should be planned for and implemented. The epidemiologist supporting the local decision makers must …
What Communities Should Do Pre-Event To Support Public Health Post-Event Assessments, Surveillance And Monitoring, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii
What Communities Should Do Pre-Event To Support Public Health Post-Event Assessments, Surveillance And Monitoring, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii
Thomas Lyons (Thom) Carr III Appl.Sc., CEM
[Abstract written March 2008, TLC] Under worst-case planning assumptions used by some major metropolitan areas, a Neighbor-to-Neighbor self-help program model is the primary link between citizens and the professional response personnel of the responsible government agencies.
In the Neighbor-to-Neighbor self-help program model or a Community Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) calls on the citizens in neighborhoods to identify and establish cluster emergency preparedness committees, Cluster Emergency Coordination Centers (CECC) and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). Missing from these plans or what is not articulated is how constant Public Health Post-Event Surveillance, Monitoring and Assessments will be done. Given the worst-case planning …
Food Based Approaches For A Healthy Nutrition In Africa, Mamoudou Hama Dicko
Food Based Approaches For A Healthy Nutrition In Africa, Mamoudou Hama Dicko
Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD
The latest estimates of the FAO demonstrate the problems of the fight against hunger. These problems are manifested by the ever-increasing number of chronically undernourished people worldwide. Their numbers during the 1999-2001 period were estimated at about 840 million of which 798 million live in developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa alone represented 198 million of those. In this part of Africa the prevalence of undernourishment ranges from 5-34%, causing growth retardation and insufficient weight gain among one third of the children under five years of age and resulting in a mortality of 5-15% among these children. Malnutrition resulting from undernourishment is …

Basic. Fortran.S-Algol. And Pascal Benchmarks On Microcomputers. Including The Effects Of Floating Point Processor Support., Marcus R. Wigan
Marcus R Wigan
A straightforward set of short and simple benchmarks has been used to examine the relative performance of a wide range of mainframe, mini, and micro systems. Comparable sets ot BASIC, Pascal. FORTRAN and Structured Algol codes are given In a series of Tables and Figures. Special attention has been paid to the role of additional processors to assist In the execution of the benchmark codes. These Include a 6809 used to accellerate APPLE-Pascal 1.1 p-code and an AMD 9511 to accelerate BASIC-E and Structured Algol semi-complied code. Two AMD 9511 versions of MicroSoft and FORTRAN FORLIB are included. The overlap …
