It is the purpose of this study (1) to investigate industrial arts programs in the Greater Seattle area to discover existing conditions and course content, (2) to research selected national curriculum projects for specific course content which each holds important, and 3) to present conditions which can improve industrial arts and assemble course content for selected subjects in industrial arts. This study is concerned with work toward solution of two of the seven problems cited by Schmitt: "l. Keeping up with advances in technology" and "7. Acquiring and teaching modern concepts of industry."

The cooperative program now has been in operation six years, long enough for both parties to have experienced success and also frustration in their efforts to mold a true partnership. Ten separate programs now operate within this framework; however different personnel and philosophies shape each program in distinctive ways. In any program demanding cooperation between not only individuals but also separate agencies, success or failure is partly dependent upon how well objectives can be shaped for the common good. The problem of this thesis deals with the instruction of trade mathematics. The major problem involves teaching trade mathematics to a heterogeneous group of technical students. The final outcome must be students mathematically competent to function in their chosen technical area. The method of instruction must be flexible enough to allow for individual differences. The mode of instruction must be able to accept the student where he is mathematically and take him to where he needs to go.
