Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Curriculum evaluation is an essential and complex activity intended to foster understanding of how teaching-learning practices serve to meet educational goals. This position paper provides a retrospective from the authors' lived experience of one multi-institutional collaborative nursing programs' history of curriculum evaluation and scholarship growth over twenty-five years. Key themes include an overview of collaborative curriculum evaluation underpinned by three philosophical perspectives, the influence of accreditation and re-mandated post-secondary institutions on scholarship development, an affirmation of curriculum evaluation as a form of knowledge development as supported by Boyer’s model of scholarship, and the development of scholarship expertise across collaborative partners …

Publish & Flourish: Helping Scholars Become Better, More Prolific Writers, Tara Gray, Laura Madson, Michelle Jackson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Some scholars want help from educational developers to become better, more prolific writers. This study examines one such program, Publish & Flourish, that holds participants accountable for writing daily and for receiving weekly feedback from peers on drafts of writing. In this mixed methods study, 95% of participants (N = 93) reported that they improved their writing by making it more organized and reader centered. Participants also reported that they increased their extrapolated average of submissions of scholarly manuscripts per year from about two to almost six. This study examined how service-learning faculty's perceptions are influenced by their experience with service learning, and how service learning affects faculty's personal and professional perceptions and job satisfaction. Data were collected from 130 participants at higher education institutions throughout the U. S. via an electronic survey. The data were used to create seven composite variables to represent each service-learning faculty perception area (Personal Growth, Teaching Advancement, Institutional Context, Community, Scholarship, Personal Values, and Institutional Emphasis). This article focuses on the use of theatre as a mode of creative scholarship, from the research involved in sketch creation to the presentation of that research to academic audiences. We particularly focus on a specific sketch developed by the CRLT Players—one that explores the consequences of subtle discrimination faced by women scientists in research laboratory settings— to illustrate the ways in which theatre can engage audiences with research results. The purpose of the current study was to pilot test a survey instrument to evaluate factors that have an affect on faculty research at one public comprehensive four-year institution. Faculty tenure has been the subject of continuing concern and controversy in American higher education. Problems in this area, including the lack of definitive standards for evaluating tenure candidates, have been highlighted by the recent downturn in the economy and the resultant decline in both enrollment and employment in colleges and universities. This trend is actively demonstrated by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Mayberry v. Dees. This Article advocates and proposes a more exacting judicial review of faculty tenure cases that are based on collegiality or other such personality criteria.
