Building Faculty Capacity For Better Teaching And Learning, L Dee Fink, Patricia A. Iannuzzi

Library Faculty Presentations

Enhancing faculty capacity for teaching in ways that promote greater levels of student engagement and significant learning is an essential part of all other institutional changes designed to advance higher quality student learning. In this session, participants will lay out a general strategy for campus leaders to cultivate that faculty capability and then identify specific actions needed to implement such a strategy. Participants will also identify key elements of effective teaching and learning centers and brainstorm ways to build a teaching- and learning-centered institutional culture.

Social Class And The College Experience Of Students In Kentucky: An Exploratory Study, Ainsley Lambert Jun 2010

Social Class And The College Experience Of Students In Kentucky: An Exploratory Study, Ainsley Lambert

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

A great deal of research in higher education is focused on difficulties that pertain specifically to lower income students. Many of these studies use qualitative methods and small samples from a single institution. This study uses quantitative methods and a stratified sample of 388 students to examine the effects of social class on students' experiences at four colleges in Kentucky. The results support the notion that lower income students feel marginalized, isolated, and "imposters" at college.

Clinical Faculty Satisfaction With The Academic Medicine Workplace, Sarah A. Bunton, April Corrice, William T. Mallon Jun 2010

Clinical Faculty Satisfaction With The Academic Medicine Workplace, Sarah A. Bunton, April Corrice, William T. Mallon

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Faculty members in US academic medical centers face multiple pressures, including increasing clinical productivity while also providing quality education to medical students and residents. With the resulting potential for decreased job satisfaction and burnout, understanding these issues is paramount—especially given the associations of job satisfaction and important outcome measures like quality of patient care and retention. The turnover of these faculty could rise and pose great financial and human capital costs to institutions. Despite the challenging context in which clinical faculty find themselves, current understanding of the facets of clinical faculty workplace satisfaction, especially by specialty area, is limited. We …

“Can I Major In Service-Learning?” An Empirical Analysis Of Certificates, Minors, And Majors, Dan W. Butin May 2010

“Can I Major In Service-Learning?” An Empirical Analysis Of Certificates, Minors, And Majors, Dan W. Butin

Education Faculty Publications

This article examines the rise of programs in higher education that award certificates, minors, and/or majors in service-learning. Using Vaughn and Seifer (2008) as a foundation, this study documented and analyzed a total of 31 academic programs that had service-learning at its academic core. Findings from this study suggest that there is indeed a coherent (though far from stable) “field” of service-learning. Moreover, the findings suggest that the strength and structure of a program is strongly dependent on its status; that is, there is a deep dividing line between certificate programs and minors and majors. This has implications for how …

Lost In Translation? How The Culture(S) Of The Technological University Dublin (Dit) Could Be Analysed Via A Lens Of Critical Discourse Analysis (Cda) Of Its Strategic Plan, And Other Documents, During Its Transition To Grangegorman, Ann Conway

Other resources

This paper discusses some of the theoretical foundations to critical discourse analysis (CDA) and will review the principles of CDA. It will attempt to answer how CDA can be understood and what conceptual tools it offers as a lens to view DIT’s changing culture and role in education and society during its transition to Grangegorman. This move from multiple sites to a ‘one size fits all’ campus is believed to be about better servicing the needs of society by ‘supporting the economic, social and cultural life of its people in one main campus’ (DEGW, 2009). CDA focuses on the links …

Fatigue Evaluation Of Asphalt Pavement Using Beam Fatigue Apparatus, Sanjeev Adhikari, Zhanping You Apr 2010

Fatigue Evaluation Of Asphalt Pavement Using Beam Fatigue Apparatus, Sanjeev Adhikari, Zhanping You

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures is predicted based on material properties and load responses. In this study, four-point bending beam fatigue testing has been used for a typical Michigan Asphalt mixture under various loading frequencies (10Hz, 5Hz, 1Hz, 0.5Hz, and 0.1Hz) and test temperatures (21.3°C, 13°, and 4°C). This study includes evaluation of different fatigue prediction models (Asphalt Institute Model and Shell Model) over wide ranges of laboratory testing conditions. In addition, this paper also provides a linkage between compression modulus and flexural stiffness, this study helps substantiate the concept that compression modulus can be used for evaluating both …

Reconciling Students’ Questions About War And Terrorism: A Powerful Teaching And Learning Approach, Kimberlee A. Sharp Apr 2010

Reconciling Students’ Questions About War And Terrorism: A Powerful Teaching And Learning Approach, Kimberlee A. Sharp

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The social studies classroom is a place for student questions. The kinds of questions students often ask involve controversial issues that they have heard about on the news, popular media, and/ or their families and friends. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan and the related issue of terrorism is no exception. However, since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, many school districts across the nation have tread softly around the controversial subjects of war and terrorism.

Findings also indicated the need for further research into what students understand about using digital textbooks. Recommendations are for the college to institute training sessions to teach students how to use the digital textbooks.

The Relationship Between Tenure And Guaranteed Salary For U.S. Medical School Faculty, Sarah A. Bunton Apr 2010

The Relationship Between Tenure And Guaranteed Salary For U.S. Medical School Faculty, Sarah A. Bunton

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Across all types of higher education in the United States, tenure has been historically linked to the concepts of academic freedom and economic security. In medical schools, however, the link between tenure and a financial guarantee has changed appreciably over the past decade into something much more tenuous. In the current economic environment where medical schools operate with limited and, arguably, unstable bases of “hard” funding, the liability of a financial guarantee to tenured faculty presents schools with a fiscal risk they often must manage. Accordingly, schools continue to revise their policies and increasingly provide no financial guarantee at all, …

The Educational Role Of Research Libraries In Higher Education: A White Paper For The Directors Of The Greater Western Library Alliance, Patricia A. Iannuzzi

Library Faculty Publications

This white paper provides background about the convergence of disparate undergraduate education movements in higher education that affect GWLA individual institutions, particularly those initiatives related to the reinvention of undergraduate education in research universities. It provides suggestions for how individual GWLA member libraries can take advantage of an unprecedented interested in education reform to assume leadership roles on our campuses, and in doing so, provide greater security for libraries during fiscal uncertainty as they position themselves, their collections, and their services as an integral part of the instructional agenda as well as the research agenda. Finally, it suggests some ways …

Athletes’ Perceptions Of Coaches’ Emotional Intelligence Competencies, Terry G. Elliott, Jennifer L. Vansickle, Heidi Hancher-Rauch

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study compared intercollegiate athletic coaches’ self-perceptions to the perceptions of their players concerning a coach’s emotional intelligence. Sixteen coaches and 223 players from two Division I softball conferences completed the Emotional Competence Inventory-2 (Boyaztis, Goleman, & Hay/McBer, 2001). Mean analysis revealed that coaches rated themselves higher on 14 of the 18 emotional intelligence competencies and on all four emotional intelligence clusters. Coaches rated themselves highest in Social Awareness (Error! Bookmark not defined.x¯ =4.27/5) while their athletes rated them highest in Self Awareness (Error! Bookmark not defined.x¯ =3.63/5).
