Traumatization Of Youth And Adolescents In The Classroom: Preparing Novice Teachers To Address The Academic And Social-Emotional Needs Of Students Affected By Trauma, Annessa J. Steele Dr.
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
While educational systems and communities have advanced in accommodating individuals with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges, teacher training is still underdeveloped in support for a growing population of youth that experiences adolescent trauma. In the United States, 26% of children will witness or experience a traumatic event before they turn four, and 60% of adults report experiencing abuse or other difficult family circumstances during childhood (National Center for Mental Health, 2012). As defined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2012), trauma “results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by …

The Impact Of Teacher Methodology Training For Higher Education Faculty Members, Nicole R. Baker
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Many college programs are designed to graduate individuals who are experts in their field of study, but not necessarily individuals who are trained in how to teach. This quantitative, quasi-experiment study examined college faculty member’s level of training in the area of teaching practices and methodology. The relation to student satisfaction, current course performance, attendance, the belief in the need for training, and faculty member’s sense of efficacy in teaching was explored. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to organize the data using a one-way ANCOVA to analyze the impact the level of training had on …

Faculty creation and adoption of OER and ZTC materials can provide students with benefits that extend beyond no-cost or low-cost considerations. These materials can be the foundation of more culturally relevant classroom materialsthanstudents are used to seeing. They can increase the accessibility of instructional materials to students with disabilities. They can be employed to support student-centered learning ideas which upend traditionalnotionshow information flows between teachers and students. Using OER and ZTC materials has the potential to address many of the concerns about inequality that faculty and students alike have about the current educational model. Although OER and ZTC initiatives present …

Barriers To Oer Adoption (And Possible Solutions), Amanda Hovious
Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories
Type of presentation: Full Session
ABSTRACT
In 2012, at the World Open Educational Resources Congress in Paris, UNESCO declared that governments within their powers should develop strategies and policies that promote open educational resources (OER) as an avenue toward the universal right of equity of access to education. Though OER has increased exponentially in availability since that time, there remain confounding factors that act as barriers to OER adoption, such as ease of discovery, ease of adaptability and re-use, and uncertainty regarding quality and sustainability. Numerous studies have examined these barriers, and these studies should be of concern to librarians …

Vietnamese American College Students’ Experiences And Strategies Of Engagement On College Campus In The United States, Nhu Nguyen
Winthrop Conference on Teaching and Learning
Several previous studies explored the destructive effect of social exclusion on Asian American college students in U.S. colleges. Previous studies reported that Vietnamese American students, as one of largest Asian American minority groups in the United States, faced numerous challenges in reaching their academic s in higher education partly due to the experience of cultural and social alienation and exclusion. The purpose of this study is to examine how Vietnamese American college students perceive the concept of “engagement” on college campus and beyond and how they develop different engagement strategies to promote their academic and social integration. Structured as phenomenological …

From Ad Hoc To Intentional: One Department’S Online Journey, Jennie A. Harrop, Carol Hutchinson, Michelle Shelton
Faculty Publications - Department of Professional Studies
When George Fox’s Department of Professional Studies offered four online courses in the summer of 2010, the faculty did not know what would come of the experiment. Six years later, the department now offers more than 25 online classes per semester, including one online major, and the program is growing. The majority of DPS students juggle families and full-time work in addition to school, and increasingly students are seeking the convenience of online offerings for both required major and general education courses. With eight regular faculty members, more than 40 adjunct faculty members, and roughly 300 adult degree-completion students, DPS …

Scholarship Policies And Attitudes At Council For Christian Colleges And Universities (Cccu), Craighton Hippenhammer
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Ernest Boyer's research in the early 1990's has had a large impact since on how many schools of higher education define and conduct scholarship. Some research universities have broadened their requirements beyond publish or perish and universities who emphasize teaching over publishing have reported activities to broaden theirsl. This research project surveys the scholarship policies and attitudes of schools within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), contrasting the views of library directors and academic deans. Supported by a grant from CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois).

Teaching Critical Thinking Through Online Writing And Debate, Douglas Harvey
Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference
Establishing an asynchronous learning environment that fosters critical thinking can be difficult due to the constraints of the format. The value of back-and-forth exchange of ideas and points can be muted by the lag time between posts. Students also tend to view forum posting as an individual writing activity, not the debate or discussion that faculty designed such environments to foster. This presentation will examine an attempt during the spring 2015 semester to employ a scaffold approach that supports moving students from individual blogging to debate in an online course. The course content involves the study of the impact of …

Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews
Gordon A Crews
This presentation was given in September of 2005 as Dr. Gordon A. Crews’ presidential address during his year as president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. It is an overview of the issue of academic and professional integrity, or lack thereof, in higher education. The comparison of academics to “snake oil salesmen” of the past is the central focus of this presentation. The presentation also analyzes the issues of integrity and collegiality in the three traditional areas of academics’ professional lives: teaching, research, and service.

Contractual relationships between faculty members and departments are like marriages and tenured relationships like marriages with children. If either party wants out, the implications can be personally and professionally devastating. While faculty quality is periodically evaluated by performance in teaching, scholarship, and service, one’s ability to develop and maintain successful personal relationships within academic environments may impact, even override, acceptable professional performance. Roundtable participants will discuss leaving institutions and being asked to leave institutions due to the personal affecting the professional, seeking other employment after an academic “divorce” ("remarriage"), professional versus personal loyalties, and other related topics.
