Making The Most Of Volunteer Help: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Janet Lynn Bond
Making The Most Of Volunteer Help: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Janet Lynn Bond
Graduate Theses
This project is concerned with the importance of parental involvement in children learning to read. Research shows children who view reading as an important and valuable process develop a more positive attitude toward learning to read. Children involved in reading activities at home learn to read earlier and have improved comprehension over children who have no experiences reading in the home. Parent involvement can take place in the home or at school as classroom volunteers. This project contains a volunteer handbook for parents and teachers. Included are characteristics of a volunteer, tips for teachers, suggested activities for the classroom and …
Self-Esteem In Elementary School Children, Joyce Carson
Self-Esteem In Elementary School Children, Joyce Carson
Dissertations
The self-concepts of 232 fourth and fifth grade students in nine classroom groups were measured by use of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI). Each student completed the SEI, and the classroom teacher for each student completed the SEI for the students who were the subjects of the study. The subjects were from a medium-sized urban school district and from a lower or middle class socioeconomic background.
Data from the administration of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory are reported as five separate scores: (a) general concept, (b) social-self-peers, (c) home-parents, (d) school-academic, and (e) total concept.
Data for the subjects were aggregated …

The Effectiveness Of Video Tape Monitoring Of Direct Instruction Procedures Across Teachers, John H. Cottrell
Masters Theses
A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used to evaluate the effects of monitoring subject performance and providing feedback regarding the implementation of Direct Instruction (DI) procedures from video taped recordings of the subject's presentations of the DI lessons upon the implementation of those DI procedures. The subjects were two junior high school special education teachers who teach reading using the SRA Corrective Reading; Decoding B program. The DI lessons were recorded on VHS video tape and observational data were recorded during baseline. During intervention, a monitor also provided feedback on the subjects performance using examples from the video …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Oral Communication Apprehension And Cognitive Restructuring In High School Speech Class, Lolita Fox Balch
A Study Of The Relationship Between Oral Communication Apprehension And Cognitive Restructuring In High School Speech Class, Lolita Fox Balch
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a cognitive restructuring unit in the reduction of oral communication apprehension (CA) and the enhancement of semester grades in high school speech class. The unit was designed to raise self-acceptance, and thereby, self-confidence, especially in oral communication.
The experimental treatment method, cognitive restructuring (plus skills training), was compared with the skills training only traditional speech class method. Both treatment methods were reviewed, as well as inappropriate treatment methods for classroom and clinic.
Subjects registered in four different speech courses were randomly assigned by computer to classes which were then …

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part Ii, Lil Brannon, Sue Livingston
An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part Ii, Lil Brannon, Sue Livingston
Publications and Research
How might deaf children acquire one of the primary goals of education literacy in English? This article suggests that literacy in English as well as knowledge of the English language can be acquired concomitantly through developmental reading and writing activities that reflect principles of first language acquisition if students bring to these activities relatable experiences which they have already linguistically represented. Such activities engage students in reading and writing where content and context support them in their attempts to actively understand and convey meaning in English. The end product of, rather than the prerequisite for, this meaningful reading and writing …
The Next Threshold: Higher Skills And The New England Economy, John C. Hoy
The Next Threshold: Higher Skills And The New England Economy, John C. Hoy
New England Journal of Public Policy
The history of the New England regional economy — its attenuated post-World War II decline and subsequent aggressive renewal — reveals an intensifying relationship between economic resurgence, the supply and continuing demand for professional manpower, and the results of academic research and development. The New England region has "outproduced" the rest of the nation in supplying professionally trained men and women, a leading factor not fully appreciated by those describing the region's robust economic health in the decade since Neal Peirce wrote The New England States. New England's "oversupply" in professional fields has given the high-tech and sophisticated services …
Arc From Implementation To Payoff Decade And Beyond, Stuart Seely Sprague
Arc From Implementation To Payoff Decade And Beyond, Stuart Seely Sprague
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Between 1965 and 1974, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) spent in excess of $2 billion. Since 1974, that figure has climbed to more than $4 billion, with the bulk of these funds spent for road building and vocational schools. Despite this outpouring of funds, many in the region have never heard of the ARC. Part of the problem is ARC's lack of credibility, caused by less than spectacular results.

A Study Of One Group's Experience Of The Advisement Process At Bank Street College, Marianne Montero
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This study describes and analyzes the Advisement Process as experienced by eight members of one advisement group. Most of the data is based on interviews with the students and the advisor of the group. Particular emphasis is given to mental health concepts that are applicable to Advisement.
Also discussed are the philosophy and goals that five of these students have for the children they teacher and how they strive to apply these.
Of the seven students interviewed, six felt that advisement was effective for them. One person did not.

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston
An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston
Publications and Research
Quigley and Kretschmer (1982) asserted that the primary goal of education for deaf children should be literacy in English. This article presents an alternative view that there be two primary goals: (a) thinking and learning through the development of meaning-making and meaning-sharing capacities and (b) the acquisition of literacy in English. In this article, the first of these goals is viewed as the more fundamental since it facilitates the acquisition of knowledge while it simultaneously serves as the prerequisite for the acquisition of literacy in English. Because neither direct language instruction nor the exclusive use of English in sign will …

The Effects Of Genre And Tone On Undergraduate Students Preferred Patterns Of Response To 2 Short-Stories And 2 Poems, Jane Ann Zaharias
The Effects Of Genre And Tone On Undergraduate Students Preferred Patterns Of Response To 2 Short-Stories And 2 Poems, Jane Ann Zaharias
Educational Studies, Research, and Technology Department Faculty Publications
To assess the effects of textual variation on students' preferred patterns of literary response, 166 college undergraduates were asked to read two poems and two short stories. They then completed a modified version of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's Response Preference Measure for each literary work. Data from the response preference inventories were analyzed by means of a two-factor repeated-measurement MANOVA, with genre and tone as the within-subjects variables. Significant main effects were obtained for both genre and tone. The genre x tone interaction was, however, not significant. As a follow-up, a series of 2 x …
Anxiety And Safety: Two Studies Ol The Kentucky Coal Miner, George E. Dickinson, Stuart Seely Sprague
Anxiety And Safety: Two Studies Ol The Kentucky Coal Miner, George E. Dickinson, Stuart Seely Sprague
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Two reports offer insight into the personality and working conditions of the Kentucky Coal miner. Dr. George E. Dickinson's survey measures death anxiety among miners; Dr. Stuart S. Sprague's correlated report tracks the often volatile effort to legislate and enforce safety regulations. Both reports arrive at one perhaps startling conclusion: many miners agree - and are somewhat supported by statistics - that they themselves are most frequently to blame for accidents.

Learning “En Passant”: The Forgotten Dimension, Jost Reischmann Prof. Dr.
Reischmann, Jost
"Lifewide learning" is understood as a continuous life process, including formal as well as self-directed learning, but also unintentional learning, "learning en passant" (learning by passing by). Focusing on this type of learning seeks to broaden the understanding of learning and asks about the consequences for the theory and practice of Adult Education.

Work And Life Away From Work: Predictors Of Faculty Satisfaction, Mary Deane Sorcinelli
Mary Deane Sorcinelli
As one aspect of a study on faculty career development, relationships between work and life away from work were explored for 112 faculty members. The sample, from one department in the humanities and one in the natural sciences and from two professional schools, was stratified by academic rank and sex. The study employed in-depth interviews followed by questionnaires. Results of regression analyses indicated that both aspects of work and life outside of work were related to work satisfaction; likewise, work as well as nonwork conditions were associated with satisfaction in life away from work. Second, work and aspects of life …

Mathematics And Science In Primary Teacher Education: The Design Of A Project To Encourage Review At The Institutional Level, John M. Owen, Ronald J. Welsh, Neville J. Johnson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Over the past two decades evaluation has been one of the growth industries in education. A major impetus for this development, particularly in the united States of America, has been the mandating of evaluations for major policy initiatives at federal and state levels (House, 1981). One result of such legislation has been that academics and private organisations have been engaged, often on long term assignments, to pass judgements on the worth of interventions designed to improve the quality of education made available in educational systems. Features of this approach to evaluation have been that they are large scale well funded, …
Preservice Classroom Experiences : The Cooperating Teacher's Role, Chester H. Laine, Sadar A. Tanveer
Preservice Classroom Experiences : The Cooperating Teacher's Role, Chester H. Laine, Sadar A. Tanveer
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
There was a time when we used to have student teaching as the only classroom experience for an individual who wanted to be a teacher. Such experiences were generally arranged during the last quarter or semester of the person's college: education In these situations, it was a matter of completing it whether one liked it or not. Following this pattern of teacher training we turned out many teachers for whom teaching may not have been a number one priority. Currently, practical school experiences are provided starting in the freshman year. State of Ohio 1980 guidelines require that preservice teachers complete …

Critical Educational Policy Analysis: A Discussion Of Perspectives, John Grimley
Critical Educational Policy Analysis: A Discussion Of Perspectives, John Grimley
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Education policy is the medium through which society and educational institutions interact. Currently major policy thrusts of devolution and participation are being promoted within the educational community. It becomes essential that these poliCces be analysed and evaluated by educators. This paper supports the role of radical humanist perspective in the development of a critical model of educational policy analysis, and stresses the necessity for teacher educators to expose student teachers to critical and radical perspectives.
