Leading Community College Distance Education, John Adams Apr 2005

Leading Community College Distance Education, John Adams

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Technological, demographic, and competitive changes in distance education (DE) pose complex leadership and strategic issues for community colleges. Leaders must establish institutional and academic objectives, develop financial and technological strategies, and organize, market, and evaluate DE initiatives. Their objectives and strategies should anticipate and help shape the developing competitive environment in which their colleges operate. This qualitative case study examined DE administrative and staff leadership roles, organization structures, and strategies at three Midwestern community colleges with expanding DE programs. Leadership teams were small. New roles and organizational structures were evolving, and the colleges were maintaining strong video delivery while developing …

Strengthening Academic Programs With Proactive Fiscal Management And Other Innovative Strategies, David Buckholdt Apr 2005

Strengthening Academic Programs With Proactive Fiscal Management And Other Innovative Strategies, David Buckholdt

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Price pressures in the form of escalating tuition will continue to impinge upon colleges and universities in an unabated fashion. While distance learning experiments and electronic assisted teaching may provide some relief in training-centric sectors of higher education, the university enterprise remains a labor intensive endeavor. Technology and healthcare expenses will continue to grow at most institutions at a rate far above the cost-of-living index. Public institutions are finding strong resistance to additional support based on tax revenue. Private institutions are increasingly being questioned about the “valueadded” they provide and whether it justifies their premium tuition.

Preserving The Future Of Rural Schools And Communities In The Plains, G. Mills Apr 2005

Preserving The Future Of Rural Schools And Communities In The Plains, G. Mills

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

There is a well-documented pattern in rural areas across the plains, as well as in other parts of the United States, of population loss and the associated consolidation or closing of literally thousands of rural schools. There is also dramatic evidence of the demise of a great many, once prosperous, small communities surrounding those same schools. It is time for more effective and sustained intervention, particularly in strengthening a sense of ‘citizenship of the place’ in those communities, especially among current school-aged children. Without this kind of thoughtful change in philosophy, the pattern of decline will continue to be repeated. …

The Power Of Collegiality In School-Based Professional Development, Susanne Owen

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The school has increasingly become the focus for teacher professional development and school leaders are maximizing teacher learning through restructuring time and meeting structures to create additional opportunities for collegial work within the school day. This research paper is the second part of a three stage research design investigating South Australian teachers’ experiences of school-based professional development and how this relates to emerging trends. This second stage of research focuses on professional development and professional growth, by interviewing fifteen staff in three case study schools to obtain greater detail about the implementation of quality teacher learning strategies. Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz Feb 2005

Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article explores the challenges of espousing a critical pedagogy within the managerial climate that presently shapes teacher education. Current discourses of professionalism are incommensurate with an understanding of the way that literacy practices are grounded in the social worlds in which both school and university students operate. Such discourses construct graduate teachers as the providers of decontextualised literacy skills to school students whose existing communication networks are ignored. We argue that an alternative understanding of professional practice can be developed by focusing on the textual resources university students use to mediate their learning, and by locating their emerging professional …

Webfolio - Using Electronic Portfolios In Preservice Teacher Education, Reesa Sorin Feb 2005

Webfolio - Using Electronic Portfolios In Preservice Teacher Education, Reesa Sorin

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Webfolio project was developed at James Cook University to extend students’ professional learning beyond what is taught in lectures or gleaned through the practicum. The Webfolio project trialled alternative platforms and approaches to teaching and learning. It was developed as an online learning environment that incorporated both real people and virtual web resources. Through web-based case studies, early childhood and primary preservice teachers explored topics of professional significance to their growth as teachers. Each case study included a range of media, such as: work samples; audiotaped conversations; links to other websites; telephone and in-person professional opinions from practicing teachers, …

Australian Teacher Education : Although Reviewed To The Eyeball Is There Evidence Of Significant Change And Where To Now?, Michael Dyson Feb 2005

Australian Teacher Education : Although Reviewed To The Eyeball Is There Evidence Of Significant Change And Where To Now?, Michael Dyson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teacher Education within Australia is once again on the cusp of further reviews at both State and Federal levels. This is in spite of frequent and invasive reviews and inquiries over the last 150 years of formal teacher education. Since the 1980s many reviews have been conducted with the intent of improving the quality of teacher education – in order to improve the learning outcomes for the pupils in the nation’s schools. This paper examines some of the reviews and the emergent patterns as it follows the journey of teacher education from the 1850s to the present day. It highlights …

Editorial Introduction, Gordon Wells Jan 2005

Editorial Introduction, Gordon Wells

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

As the result of a number of problems, this issue has been a long time in coming. But, as usual, it contains a collection of stimulating articles that each, in its way, reports an attempt to bring about improvement in the quality of learning in a particular setting. Providing a common thread across these articles is the issue of motivation, which is both a prerequisite for, and an outcome of, the kinds of learning that aim for understanding and are the basis for effective and responsible action.

Using Reading Response Journals For Reading Comprehension, Lauree M. Buus Jan 2005

Using Reading Response Journals For Reading Comprehension, Lauree M. Buus

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

This action research study is aimed at addressing the memory issues that are seen daily in the classroom. Students in a literature-based reading program used reading response journals to assist in their reading comprehension. Anecdotal observations, journal writing, conferencing, interest surveys, and knowledge-based comprehension tests were used to determine the effectiveness of this approach. Memory has three components: sensory memory storage, short-term memory storage, and long-term memory storage. It is desirable for students to get major concepts into long-term memory and back out when needed. This process includes the steps of encoding, storage, retrieval, and reporting. Many factors can influence …

Forensic Science In The Elementary Classroom, Todd Campbell, Brianna Worst Jan 2005

Forensic Science In The Elementary Classroom, Todd Campbell, Brianna Worst

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

This article stems from a pre-service teacher's attempt to translate "inquiry as a theory" into "inquiry as a practice" in a science classroom. It is intended to provide a snapshot of grappling with inquiry instruction, from both a pre-service teacher and a science teacher educator's perspective, while also offering approaches for allowing students to engage in scientific inquiry by posing questions and working toward solutions. Lastly, this article offers what the teacher researcher and the teacher educator learned in the pre-service preparation program.

Bully Prevention, Kevin John Bailey, Hector Rios

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

The purpose of this paper is to share with those interested parties the results of my action research study, which is how best to prevent bullying and promote prosocial interaction among a group of eighth grade students attending an elementary school located on the northeast coast of the United States. The study sprang from the need to increase the children's prosocial behaviors and state and federal mandates that require schools to address the problem of bullying in schools.

The Effectiveness Of Student-Chosen Pairs For Cooperative Learning, Robin Morelock Jan 2005

The Effectiveness Of Student-Chosen Pairs For Cooperative Learning, Robin Morelock

Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research

Cooperative learning is a well-established technique for improving student learning. A large number of studies have shown that cooperative learning improves learning, understanding and remembering. It also helps students feel better about themselves, the class and their classmates. (Johnson, Johnson and Holubec 1993; Slavin 1991). My own experience as a Junior High science teacher leads me to agree with studies indicating the value of cooperative learning. This study, however, deals not with the value of cooperative learning, but with establishing the best grouping for cooperative learning. Research on grouping has not shown clear-cut results. Heterogeneous and homogeneous groups both seem …

Perceptions Of Gender Competence: Are Christian Colleges Different, Edee Schulze, Annette Tomal Jan 2005

Perceptions Of Gender Competence: Are Christian Colleges Different, Edee Schulze, Annette Tomal

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Perceptions of student and professor competence and respect were investigated through a survey of 2042 students from 77 liberal arts colleges, both Christian and non-Christian. The Christian schools are part of the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities); CCCU responses were 78.5 percent of the total. Chi- Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine if gender and type of college affected students’ responses. Two conclusions can be made about student competence and value: (1) male CCCU students are most likely to believe that male students are viewed as more competent than female students and (2) non-CCCU students are …

Evaluating A Moral Thinking Assessment Model For Evangelical Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Michael A. Hayes Jan 2005

Evaluating A Moral Thinking Assessment Model For Evangelical Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Michael A. Hayes

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

A model using moral judgment and cultural ideology (political and religious ideology) for predicting moral thinking about critical social and political issues, developed by Narvaez, Getz, Rest, and Thoma (1999), was assessed for utility with students at evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges. Freshmen (N = 199) and seniors (N = 230) from 2 evangelical Christian liberal arts colleges participated, completing the Defining Issues Test 2, Inventory of Religious Belief, and Attitudes Toward Human Rights Inventory. The regression model predicted a significant amount of variance for the students in this study; however, the R2 value (.22) was much smaller than …

The Relationship Between Spiritual Well Being And College Adjustment For Freshmen At A Southeastern University, Robert E. Ratliff

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The purpose of this study was to identify the possible relationship between spiritual well being and college adjustment in first-year college students. The Spiritual Well Being Scale and the College Adjustment Scales were administered. Relational analysis was used to investigate 91 college freshmen enrolled in a freshman seminar course at Charleston Southern University, Charleston, South Carolina. This relational analysis included both psychological and developmental aspects of college adjustment in nine specific areas of college adjustment: anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, academic problems, and career problems. A statistically significant relationship was found between spiritual well …
