An Analysis Of Most Important Values Among Low-Income, High-Ability Middle School Students, Jennifer Riedl Cross
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Value orientations, based on Schwartz’s theory of human values, were collected from low-income, high-ability middle school students (N = 215; 87.4% Black, Hispanic, or Mixed) through a values affirmation activity in the 7th and again in the 8th grade. Students ranked “Being successful” highest in 7th grade, “Being safe and secure” highest in 8thgrade. Most important values in the Conservation and Self-Transcendent quadrants predominated and were most stable from 7th to 8th grade. Analysis of essays on their most important values identified the significance of Others in their lives, including the desire …

Experienced counselors in three eastern states were surveyed about the incidence of racial issues presented by their White clients and were asked to complete the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scales (WRIAS) and to respond to a questionnaire about a White client presenting a racial issue. Nearly a quarter of the counselors responding to the survey reported having some clients raising racial issues as main issues in counseling, and 45% reported having some clients bringing up racial issues relevant to their counseling. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between ex-spousal interactions following remarriage and the behavioral and emotional adjustment of stepchildren. The subjects for the study were volunteers and were recruited for the study either through The PACES Family Counseling Center at The College of William and Mary or through a networking sampling procedure. The study participants included stepchildren between the ages of 8 and 16, and their residential biological parents.;Thirty-one stepchild/biological-parent pairs participated in the study by completing a series of questionnaires relevant to ex-spousal interactions and children's adjustment. This study described spousal reactions to loss following a cancer related death. Anticipatory grieving behaviors and variables unique to cancer were examined using Lazarus' cognitive appraisal paradigm. An interview which focused on self-reported changes in thoughts and feelings from time of diagnosis to the time of the death was administered by the researcher to thirty men and/or women whose spouses had died from cancer over the past two and a half years.;Individual responses to the interview questions were categorized according to type of response. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of breach of confidentiality on adolescents' level of trust using a pretest/posttest control group experimental design. The study used a normal population of eighth grade middle school students enrolled in average regular education classes in the Hampton Public School System. A review of the literature seems to indicate that the helping professions attract people who are "prone" to codependency. This study investigated the effects of psychiatric hospitalization on the self-concepts of 44 adolescents. Labeling theory suggests that the stigma of being labeled as a patient in a mental hospital will hurt an adolescent's self-concept. The sample for this study consisted of 44 adolescent acute care patients in a private psychiatric hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. their length of stay averaged 20.1 days and ranged from 8 to 38 days in the hospital. Each was diagnosed by an accredited psychiatrist or a licensed psychologist as having symptoms of depression or dysthymic disorder. The purpose of this study was to investigate parental perceptions of children clinically diagnosed as Affective Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or Conduct Disorder. The results were assessed in reference to their implications for family therapy.;The sample utilized in this study was 97 sets of mother-father dyads who sought psychiatric intervention for their child at local mental health clinics. The mother-father pairs in these intact families completed a demographic questionnaire and the Peterson-Quay Revised Behavior Checklist. This study was designed to examine the relationship between husband-wife/assertiveness-nonassertiveness and the level of marital satisfaction. One hundred seventy married couples, who volunteered to participate, served as the sample for the study. Each individual completed the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Based on the RAS scores of the husband and wife, the couple was assigned to one of four groups. The four groupings were: (1) Husband and wife were both assertive. (2) The husband was assertive and the wife was nonassertive. (3) The husband was nonassertive and the wife was assertive. (4) The husband and …
