Positive educational experiences deliberately sought through advising can lead to increased academic success, improved college experiences, and long-term benefits as graduates become contributing citizens in society. However, much of the research on the role of and advantages related to academic advising has been limited to American colleges and universities. Influences Of Self In Career Decision-Making Among Gifted Adolescents Attending Governor's School In Science And Technology, William Rutledge Orton

The purpose of this study was to investigate conflict in educational and career decision-making of gifted adolescents who had attended a summer residential program in science and technology. The sample consisted of 147 gifted and talented young men and women who attended the Virginia Governor's School in Science and Technology in either 1990 or 1995. Subjects completed the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire (MIQ) as a measure of work needs and values, and an investigator-designed questionnaire that probed the path of their career decision-making. Comprehensive Services For Students With Serious Emotional Disturbance: An Analysis Of State Legislation And Policy, Elizabeth B. Hill

The purpose of this study was to examine state legislation and policy related to comprehensive, integrated services for students with serious emotional disturbance. Legislation and policy documents from nine states, Virginia (the pilot study), Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin, were examined. These documents were compared to a set of components extracted from the literature as recommended practice. The document analysis was confirmed through telephone interviews with state-level policymakers in each state's department of education, department of mental health, and/or department of children's services. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among prolonged teacher stress (or burnout), teachers' perceptions of leadership style adaptability, and teacher irrational belief systems.;The York County School Division was chosen because of the relative availability of subjects. Three surveys measuring teachers' perceptions of leadership style and style adaptability, teachers' irrational belief systems, and prolonged teacher stress, were disseminated among elementary classroom teachers in the county. Out of 100 elementary school teachers surveyed, there were 71 responses.;Three dimensions of burnout were measured: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment.
