Schools And Boys: Implications For Special Educators, Jack Hourcade, Holly Anderson

Throughout history boys and girls have been perceived by schools and society as possessing different and distinctive learning styles and capabilities. More recently, boys may be more "at-risk" under contemporary school practices. Three differences were identified: 1) Boys are significantly more likely than girls to demonstrate learning and behavior characteristics associated with school failure. Special educators should provide greater opportunities for boys to learn and be evaluated through nonverbal activities, including multi-media presentations. 2) Boys may have higher activity needs than girls. This causes problems when boys are asked to sit for extended periods of time. Special educators should provide …

Supporting children with autism spectrum disorders in the general education classroom presents a unique challenge to the teachers and schools that serve them. This article addresses the utility of self-management as a proactive strategy for increasing the task engagement and compliant behavior of high-functioning students with autism. The author discusses the rationale for self-management, outlines the steps for developing an intervention plan, and presents a case vignette to illustrate implementation of a self-management procedure.

Kentucky Youth At Risk Transitions: A Report To The Commonwealth, Doris Pierce, Norman Powell, Amy Marshall, Ronnie Nolan, Elaine Fehringer

In the Commonwealth of Kentucky, there are over 22,000 youth being educated in programs that are funded, operated or contracted by state agencies. These state agency children come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and bring a multiplicity of social, psychological, behavioral and educational problems that challenge teachers and staffs. These particular Kentucky students, more than any others, are at the greatest risk of not making successful transitions into adulthood. It is critical that all such young people be afforded the highest quality of transition planning and support so that they can become successful and productive adults.
