Timss 2015 : A First Look At Australia's Results, Sue Thomson, Nicole Wernert, Elizabeth O'Grady, Sima Rodrigues

Elizabeth O'Grady

The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement across countries to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. It is designed, broadly, to align with the mathematics and science curricula in the participating education systems and countries, and focuses on assessment at Year 4 and Year 8. It also provides comparative perspectives on trends in achievement in the context of different education systems, school organisational approaches and instructional practices; and to enable this, TIMSS collects a rich array of background data from students, schools and teachers, and also collects data about the education systems themselves. …

Lessons From Pisa 2012 About Mathematical Literacy : An Illustrated Essay, Ross Turner Dec 2015

Lessons From Pisa 2012 About Mathematical Literacy : An Illustrated Essay, Ross Turner

Ross Turner

Mathematics is central in school curricula around the world, yet outcomes are mixed at best. This is true both in relation to attitudes expressed towards mathematics, and in relation to observed assessment outcomes, showing how poorly individuals are prepared to use mathematics in a world in which the ability to do so is of increasing importance. Why? This essay uses some mathematics outcomes from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 to seek explanations and possible ways forward. The main message is that negative outcomes of school mathematics arise for a variety of reasons, and they can be reversed …

Snapshots Issue 4: Boys, Girls And Mathematics, Lisa De Bortoli

Lisa De Bortoli

The most recent OECD Programme for International Assessment (PISA) survey enables educators, policy makers and the wider community to compare Australian students with each other, as well as their counterparts across the world. PISA measures the extent to which 15-year-old students near the end of compulsory education have acquired the knowledge and skills that young adults need to meet the challenges of the future. This issue of Snapshots looks to the data from PISA on similarities and differences in student performance by sex to inform education policies, improve educational outcomes and equity.

Thinking It Through: Australian Students’ Skills In Creative Problem Solving, Lisa De Bortoli, Greg Macaskill Sep 2014

Thinking It Through: Australian Students’ Skills In Creative Problem Solving, Lisa De Bortoli, Greg Macaskill

Lisa De Bortoli

In every PISA survey, students from every participating country are assessed in the core domains of mathematics, science and reading literacy. In addition to assessing these literacy domains, the OECD proposes additional assessments in other domains. In PISA 2003, a paper-based assessment of cross- disciplinary problem solving was first assessed, when it was included as a core domain. In PISA 2012, problem solving was once again assessed, this time as an optional computer-based assessment.

The focus of the PISA 2012 assessment of problem solving was: Are today’s 15-year-old students acquiring the problem-solving skills that will prepare them to meet the …

Using Competencies To Explain Mathematical Item Demand: A Work In Progress, Ross Turner, Werner Blum, Morgens Niss

Ross Turner

This chapter describes theoretical and practical issues associated with the development and use of a rating scheme for the purpose of analysing mathematical problems—specifically, to assess the extent to which solving those problems calls for the activation of a particular set of mathematical competencies. The competencies targeted through the scheme are based on the mathematical competencies that have underpinned each of the PISA Mathematics Frameworks. The scheme consists of operational definitions of the six competencies (labelled as communication; devising strategies; mathematisation; representation; using symbols, operations and formal language; and reasoning and argument), descriptions of four levels of activation of …

An Exercise In Institutional Reflection: The Learning Analytics Readiness Instrument (Lari), Kimberly E. Arnold, Steven Lonn, Matthew Pistilli

Matthew Pistilli

While the landscape of learning analytics is relatively well defined, the extent to which institutions are ready to embark on an analytics implementation is less known. Further, while work has been done on measuring the maturity of an institution’s implementation, this work fails to investigate how an institution that has not implemented analytics to date might become mature over time. To that end, the authors developed and piloted a
survey, the Learning Analytics Readiness Instrument (LARI), in an attempt to help institutions successfully prepare themselves for a successfully analytics implementation. The LARI is comprised of 90 items encompassing five factors …
