Why Ask That? Low Stakes Questions Build Engagement, Van Whaley Jan 2023

Why Ask That? Low Stakes Questions Build Engagement, Van Whaley

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

A few low-stakes questions during the term build engagement, encourage persistence, and can improve learning outcomes.

During labs, students work together to learn Anatomy & Physiology… plus answer these Engagement Booster Questions.

The Need
Students need to meet classmates. After two years of online-only education, returning to in-person labs is a new experience many students find uncomfortable and challenging.

The Existing Resources
Students in the same lab have several similarities that include enrolling in the same lecture section, similar schedules, the same completed prerequisites, similar majors, and career aspirations.

The Goal
Building engagement between students should help more students complete …

Parasites: The Inside Scoop, Scott Lyell Gardner, Judy Diamond, Gábor R. Rácz, Brenda Lee Jul 2021

Parasites: The Inside Scoop, Scott Lyell Gardner, Judy Diamond, Gábor R. Rácz, Brenda Lee

Zea E-Books Collection

Parasites are organisms that live inside or on another species, called the host. Parasites depend on their hosts for food and a place to live. They may harm the host in small or large ways. Parasitism is the most common mode of life on Earth. Humans, other animals, and all plants have parasites, usually two or more kinds. Even parasites can have parasites. There are millions of species of parasites, and scientists discover new ones every day. Parasite specimens are stored in museums all around the world. One of the world’s largest collections is in the H. W. Manter Laboratory …

Protein Folding & Structure Prediction Posters

Initially, drugs were discovered by either chance or by trial and error through screening methods. Because scientists did not have the ability to model protein structures, drug discovery was a very expensive process. Currently, researchers are working on technologies to determine protein ligands and potential drugs through the usage of predicted protein structures.

Protein Folding & Structure Prediction Posters

When proteins form polypeptide chains, they form primary structure - their amino acid sequence - secondary structure - their local shapes - and tertiary structure - their global fold and shape. Tertiary structure and its prediction are of vital importance to the biology community because of its importance for manipulating gene expression, cell-wide processes, and more. Because of the innumerable possibilities for even a simple primary structure protein, prediction is incredibly difficult. As bioinformatics technologies advance, though, our understanding of tertiary folding advances.

Research poster describing UNE's Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences (CEN) K-12 outreach program. Founded in 2009 with three main areas of focus—research, scholarship and community outreach—CEN includes over 40 faculty members affiliated with neuroscience research and/or education. The Neuroscience Outreach Program was established in 2009 with the goal of bringing fun, interactive neuroscience lessons to schools to engage students in learning about neuroscience. UNE undergraduate and professional students present the lessons in classrooms with support from UNE faculty and staff.

Books and Monographs

This volume collects the ideas and insights discussed at a novel conference, the Integrating Cognitive Science with Innovative Teaching in STEM Disciplines Conference, which was held September 27-28, 2012 at Washington University in St. Louis. With funding from the James S. McDonnell Foundation, the conference was hosted by Washington University’s Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE), a center established in 2011. Available for download as a PDF. Titles of individual chapters can be found at http://openscholarship.wustl.edu/circle_book/.
