Empowering Latinos To Pursue A Degree In Astronomy/Physics, Ivon Tapia
Empowering Latinos To Pursue A Degree In Astronomy/Physics, Ivon Tapia
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Empowering Latino students to pursue careers in astronomy/physics is possible if we find the correct way to help them. Astronomy can help our planet, and physics teaches us how to appreciate our earth and everything around us. Currently, Latinos are underrepresented in these careers. This senior capstone examines the different ways that schools could empower Latino students to pursue careers in astronomy/physics. Through the use of literature review, interviews with two teachers and one astronomer, and an anonymous survey of students, the result findings indicate that introducing careers in astronomy/physics to Latino students at a young age could spark their …
Increasing Science Curriculum In Preschool, Sandra Rogel
Increasing Science Curriculum In Preschool, Sandra Rogel
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Early preschool curriculum often needs more attention to science. When the science curriculum is missing from the preschool curriculum, children may not recognize early science concepts, develop little interest in scientific concepts, and lack sufficient skills for kindergarten readiness. When preschool children are exposed to a science curriculum, they begin to apply scientific concepts, acquire scientific language, and develop scientific thinking. Therefore, to address the insufficiency of science in the preschool curriculum, I developed a three-day lesson for 3 to 5-year-olds at MCOE Early Learning Program at Creekside in Salinas, California.

Introducing Science Education In Early Childhood, Marissa M. Arciniega
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The increasing focus on literacy development and kindergarten readiness in preschool has created a lack of science education in early childhood education. In recent research, Head Start found that of the four academic readiness domains for preschoolers (i.e., language, literacy, math, and science), science is the lowest-performing area amongst students in their program (Bustamante, White, & Greenfield, 2018). Research is showing that declining performance in science is partly due to the lack of science education in classrooms. Lack of science is not only affecting school performance down the road, but it also limits children in receiving the benefits of early …
Escapando Las Trampas: Teacher Preparation For Mexicanas, Larissa Perez
Escapando Las Trampas: Teacher Preparation For Mexicanas, Larissa Perez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Developing Maestras face and overcome linguistic, academic and cultural forms of gatekeeping while trying to navigate through our current education system. For this Capstone Project, the impact that gatekeeping has on developing Maestras and how it affects their academic and professional aspirations was investigated. This is an important issue for developing Maestras, the University of Gringolandia as well as for the education system of Nepantla county. The success of developing Maestras Mexicanas closes the racial gap and directly impacts the student success rate within Nepantla county. The literature and data results analysis indicate that the gatekeeping practices that keep Mexicanas …

Genius: Scie-Nce Access For Unde-Represente-D University Parties, Kaitlin Palmer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The School of Natural Sciences (SNS) houses the biology, marine science, and environmental science, technology, and policy majors which have low retention rates. The Science Student Success (S3) Program was created as a toolbox for first-generation and low socioeconomic college students to receive support and access to the resources they need to help them succeed. Three S3 Program students were interviewed to obtain their viewpoints on what should be done to improve the success and retention of first-generation and low-income SNS students. From an analysis of the students’ interviews and the scholarly literature, three factors emerged as important to increase …
Using Minecraft To Integrate Common Core Activities Across Elementary School Curriculum, William A J Couling
Using Minecraft To Integrate Common Core Activities Across Elementary School Curriculum, William A J Couling
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Minecraft, an open world sandbox game rich with educational possibility, has been a growing sensation among elementary age children across the US. Though there has been some experimentation in a number of schools across the United States, there has been no mass movement to embracing Minecraft as a virtual learning environment. With advances in the fields of Virtual Learning Environments and the new wave of educational thinking known as the “Maker Movement,” the modern educational field has an opportunity for radical new ways of teaching. Using an elementary school as a model in the Monterey Bay area, I surveyed a …
