The Standardization Of Scientific Terminology And The Teaching Of The Natural Sciences In Nineteenth-Century Brazil: The Contribution Of Benjamin Ramiz Galvão [A Padronização Da Terminologia Científica E O Ensino Das Ciências Naturais No Brasil Oitocentista: A Contribuição De Benjamin Ramiz Galvão], Karl M. Lorenz

During the nineteenth century, and the first years of the twentieth century, science textbooks and science teaching in the faculties of medicine and engineering and in the secondary schools of Brazil were characterized by the lack of a standardized scientific terminology. The rules governing the orthography and prosody of many scientific terms in the life, physical and earth sciences were inconsistent. The paper examines this phenomenon and recounts the first significant attempt to standardize scientific terminology in the Portuguese language by the Brazilian philologist, Benjamin Franklin Ramiz Galvão.
Durante o século XIX e os primeiros anos do século XX os …

Not Just Informative, But Necessary: Infusing Green And Sustainable Topics Into Engineering And Technology Curricula, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Elif Kongar Jun 2008

Not Just Informative, But Necessary: Infusing Green And Sustainable Topics Into Engineering And Technology Curricula, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Elif Kongar

Generally accepted duties of engineers and technologists encompass designing and implementing solutions to problems. When so doing, it is their responsibility to be cognizant of the impacts of their designs on, and thus their accountability to, not only society in general, but also subsequent effects upon the environment. They need to be able to concurrently satisfy these competing needs, as well as constraints specific to the design challenges at hand. Responding to these requirements are the growing fields of green engineering and sustainable engineering. Both of these areas encompass many concepts, ideas, and tools, all of which are essential information …

O Positivismo No Ensino De Ciências Naturais Na Escola Secundária Brasileira: 1890-1900 [Positivism And The Teaching Of The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Secondary School: 1890-1900], Karl M. Lorenz Jun 2008

O Positivismo No Ensino De Ciências Naturais Na Escola Secundária Brasileira: 1890-1900 [Positivism And The Teaching Of The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Secondary School: 1890-1900], Karl M. Lorenz

The paper discusses the adoption of French curriculum models and educational practices, from 1837 to 1889, by the College Pedro II, the premier secondary school of Brazil during the empire. The college was founded in Rio de Janeiro to attend to the children of the elite in the Municipality of the Court and to serve as a model institution for public and private secondary schools in the provinces.
O trabalho discute a adoção de modelos curriculares e de praticas educativas da França, de 1838 a 1889, pelo Colégio de Pedro II, a escola secundaria preeminente durante o Império. O colégio …

Approximate Solution Of Abel Integral Equation, Li Huang Jan 2008

Approximate Solution Of Abel Integral Equation, Li Huang

Li Huang

This paper presents a new, stable, approximate inversion of Abel integral equation. By using the Taylor expansion of the unknown function, Abel equation is approximately transformed to a system of linear equations for the unknown function together with its derivatives. A desired solution can be determined by solving the resulting system according to Cramer’s rule. This method gives a simple and closed form of approximate Abel inversion, which can be performed by symbolic computation. The nth-order approximation is exact for a polynomial of degree up to n. Abel integral equation is approximately expressed in terms of integrals of input data; …

Moving Beyond Cultural Barriers: Successful Strategies Of Female Technology Education Teachers, Raymond R. Mccarthy, Joseph B. Berger Jan 2008

Moving Beyond Cultural Barriers: Successful Strategies Of Female Technology Education Teachers, Raymond R. Mccarthy, Joseph B. Berger

Women are underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields of study and careers with a subset of STEM--Technology Education--possibly one of the least integrated fields for women as students and as professionals (Akmal, Oaks, & Barker, 2004; Braundy, 2004; Braundy, Petrina, Dalley & Paxton, 2000; Zuga, 1996; Zuga, 1999). What accounts for this situation and what are potential remedies? The purpose of this study was to learn about the ways in which female technology education teachers understand sources of influence on their career choices. The findings from this study are intended to provide insights into the participants; perspectives that …

Systematic Pedagogy In The Chemical Equilibrium Classroom, Melissa Eslinger Dec 2007

Systematic Pedagogy In The Chemical Equilibrium Classroom, Melissa Eslinger

Melissa Eslinger

J.H. Hildebrand in 1946 perhaps stated it best, “There seems to be no topic in freshman chemistry that presents more difficulties to students than chemical equilibrium. After trying for over 30 years to give clear answers to their questions, I have come to have a great deal of sympathy with them, realizing that the subject is inherently a difficult one.” Chemical equilibrium continues to challenge even the most apt pupils. The test of utilizing an alternative methodology, the systematic approach, was worthy of exploring to demonstrate if cadets could focus their learning on the concepts in lieu of the traditional …
