Open Letter To Science Teachers: Society In The Science Classroom, Darrel Hoff
Open Letter To Science Teachers: Society In The Science Classroom, Darrel Hoff
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In a speech given to a group of scientists and science educators last spring, Paul deHart Hurd repeated a remark made earlier by Bentley Glass that "a serious mistake has been made in the development of our national curricula in not stressing the social implications of science". Indeed this is true. You will search in vain for a reference to atomic weapons in the index of the Chem Study text. You will find no listing for hydrogen fusion weapons in the index of the PSSC text. DDT goes unlisted in the CBA index. You will find no reference to the …

How We Raise Clean, Healthy Amoeba Proteus, Eugene C. Bovee, Sandra C. Thompson, Mercedes L. Acuña
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We so frequently use Amoeba proteus for observation and experimentation in our classes in Cell Structure and Function, and Physiological Protozoology at the University of Kansas, that it has been necessary to avoid buying the many needed cultures from any of the major biological suppliers. Consequently, we have had to devise a reasonably reliable method of our own to culture that amoeba.
The Toxic Activity Of Main Trunk Wood From Diseased Dutch Elm Trees, Lyle C. Baugess, J. Lester Dalton
The Toxic Activity Of Main Trunk Wood From Diseased Dutch Elm Trees, Lyle C. Baugess, J. Lester Dalton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The Dutch Elm disease is caused by Ceratostomella ulmi (Schwartz) Buis (1); and, two types of elm bark beetles (9) are its vectors (3,4,9). Growth of the fungus occurs in the xylem tissue, which predominantly is concerned with conduction of water to the foliage. The spores and bud cells of C. ulmi are smaller than the elm wood vessels (1,2). C. ulmi, too, can be transmitted through root grafts.

Enthusiasm for use of lasers in air pollution studies is being tempered by evidence that they should not be regarded as a universally useful yardstick, a University of Wisconsin physicist says.
The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn
The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
"If at first you don't succeed, you are just about average." This flippant statement of a common experience has led to the multi-media approach in an attempt to make the learning of biology for the average sixteen year old who scores between 35 to 89 on the comprehensive test of the ITED more meaningful and successful.

A Consideration Of Student Understanding Of Science In Two Approaches To Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton
A Consideration Of Student Understanding Of Science In Two Approaches To Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The understanding of science by students is considered by science educators to be a worthwhile goal in the teaching of science. Attempts have been made to achieve this goal in the various curricula that have been developed, and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study is one of these curricula. Several studies have been attempted to measure the understanding of science as a student outcome in a particular course such as BSCS Biology. In most studies the Test On Understanding Science (TOUS) (1) was the most common instrument used.

Batteries And Bulbs With An Average Class Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the fall semester of 1969 I had occasion to try some elementary science units with a low group of ninth graders. Of the units tried, the E.S.S. "Batteries and Bulbs" had such interesting results that it instilled in me the idea of trying the unit with my regular ninth grade class.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal
U.S. Army-Iowa Science, Engineering, and Humanities Symposium - In September, 1969, letters announcing this year's symposium and preliminary applications were sent to high school principals in Iowa and western Illinois. This year through the cooperation of the Iowa Academy of Science, initial letters and applications were also sent directly to the science teachers whose names were on the academy's mailing list. Included in the letter was a brief sketch of symposium activities and goals. The science teacher applications included nominations for student research papers and nominations for student symposium participants other than those applying to give papers.

Known as "SESAME" (Search for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education), the recently established program leads to a Ph.D. Its aim is to offer students the opportunity to combine advanced training in one of the natural sciences or mathematics with the pursuit of central interests in science education.
The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson
The Iowa Academy Of Science As A Directing Influence In Science Education, Robert W. Hanson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The last decade was marked by drastic changes in the studied approach to teaching science and most school subjects. A whole new vocabulary of science education terminology appeared-the process approach, conceptual schemes, Hanson integrated science, audio-tutorial techniques, the multi-media approach, computer-assisted instruction. These and many other phrases can be summed up in the one word innovation, and many educators of the more traditional bent feel a bit uneasy and perhaps defensive about the extent to which innovation is lacking in their teaching.
