Accountable Assessment, Richard Lehrer
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
There is widespread agreement about the importance of accounting for the extent to which educational systems advance student learning. Yet, the forms and formats of accountable assessments often ill serve students and teachers; the summative judgements of student performance that are typically employed to indicate proficiencies on benchmarks of student learning commonly fail to capture student performance in ways that are specific and actionable for teachers. Timing is another key barrier to the utility of summative assessment. In the US, summative evaluations occur at the end of the school year and may serve future students, but do not help teachers …

The Next Generation Science Standards call for science learning be composed of scientific practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas, i.e. “three-dimensional." The class SCED 201 at Western uses the Next Generation Physical Science and Everyday Thinking curriculum, whose publishers claim it to be three-dimensional. A revised version of the Three-Dimensional Learning Assessment Protocol (3DLAP), was used to analyze one unit of the curriculum. Knowing how to revise learning opportunities to engage with each of the three dimensions, will help provide students with learning in line with the NGSS. This poster presents the results of the 3DLAP analysis, and an …

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
This presentation will guide 4th-12th grade educators to engage students in using content area knowledge to solve real-world problems. Using an adaptation of policy debate, learners use facts and evidence gathered through their participation in Science and Engineering Practices to create resolutions to place-based issues that are occurring in their own communities.

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference
To promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education through ballooning, the North Dakota Space Grant Consortium (NDSGC) organizes an annual Near-Space Balloon Competition (NSBC) for students in grades 6 - 12. Students across the state of North Dakota have the opportunity to launch experiments into a near- space environment. The students learn how to write proposals, design payloads, and analyze data. They learn through an active, inquiry-based style that will prepare them for real-world engineering and critical thinking jobs. In 2016, NSBC proposed Great American Eclipse as the theme for the competition, thus the students were focused on designing …
