A Call For A Humanistic Stance Toward K–12 Data Science Education, Victor R. Lee, Michelle H. Wilkerson, Kathryn Lanouette

School of Education Articles

There is growing interest in how to better prepare K–12 students to work with data. In this article, we assert that these discussions of teaching and learning must attend to the human dimensions of data work. Specifically, we draw from several established lines of research to argue that practices involving the creation and manipulation of data are shaped by a combination of personal experiences, cultural tools and practices, and political concerns. We demonstrate through two examples how our proposed humanistic stance highlights ways that efforts to make data personally relevant for youth also necessarily implicate cultural and sociopolitical dimensions that …

Implicit Theories Of Ability And Self-Efficacy: Testing Alternative Social Cognitive Models To Science Motivation, Jason A. Chen, M. Shane Tutwiler Apr 2017

Implicit Theories Of Ability And Self-Efficacy: Testing Alternative Social Cognitive Models To Science Motivation, Jason A. Chen, M. Shane Tutwiler

School of Education Articles

Our overall goal was to empirically test what we called the “growth mindset as inoculation” hypothesis using a series of latent profile analytical approaches. This inoculation hypothesis, which is consistent with the way in which Dweck and Leggett (1988) described their social cognitive approach, states that believing in the malleability of intelligence serves a protective role against negative motivational and achievement outcomes. Participants were Grade 6 students (n = 504) from a middle school and Grade 10 students (n = 354) from two high schools in the Southeastern part of the United States. Two distinct patterns emerged, which corresponded to …

Equity In Mathematics: Algebra For Everyone, Regina Lynn Hervey Jan 2000

Equity In Mathematics: Algebra For Everyone, Regina Lynn Hervey

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Research over the past twenty years supports the teacher as the critical factor in the implementation of educational programs. The primary purpose of this mixed design study was to determine teachers' perceptions in implementing the required Algebra I program that was mandated by the state of Virginia in 1995. The research was examined through the lens of the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM): communicating mathematically, making mathematical connections, becoming mathematical problem solvers, and reasoning mathematically. This study was limited to ninth grade Algebra I teachers in a school division in Virginia. Two Concerns Based Adoption …

An Investigation Of The Achievement Of 4 X 4 Block-Scheduled Advanced Placement Calculus Ab Students, Carolyn Marie Keen Jan 1996

An Investigation Of The Achievement Of 4 X 4 Block-Scheduled Advanced Placement Calculus Ab Students, Carolyn Marie Keen

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The research investigated whether 4 x 4 block scheduling had any effect on students' achievement in Advanced Placement Calculus AB and described some of the dynamics involved in the shifts to 4 x 4 plans. Data from 52 schools (38 North Carolina, 14 Virginia) were divided into two groups: (Sample 1) 25 schools in which the course was taught in one semester (N = 252) and (Sample 2) 27 schools in which it was taught in two semesters (N = 355). Using two-tailed Z and chi square goodness-of-fit tests {dollar}(\alpha=0.05),{dollar} the 1995 AP test mean score of each sample was …

Lessons From The Past: An Historical Analysis Of Science Education (Biology) Curriculum Reforms, 1950 To 1975, Gwetheldene Louise Holzmann Jan 1994

Lessons From The Past: An Historical Analysis Of Science Education (Biology) Curriculum Reforms, 1950 To 1975, Gwetheldene Louise Holzmann

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine what relationship existed between preservice science (biology) teacher education and the reforms in secondary school biology that occurred between 1950 and 1975. Research questions were generated which dealt with the collaboration of the various sectors of education as well as if the prospective teachers were being trained to teach the reform curricula through their college science and teacher education coursework.;Content analysis of textbooks was utilized to determine the content of textbooks on the secondary and higher education level. The secondary texts contrasted were Modern Biology and the BSCS Blue and Green series. …

The Effect Of Computer-Assisted Instruction In Improving Mathematics Performance Of Low-Achieving Ninth-Grade Students, Thomas Everett Bailey Jan 1991

The Effect Of Computer-Assisted Instruction In Improving Mathematics Performance Of Low-Achieving Ninth-Grade Students, Thomas Everett Bailey

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether computer assisted instruction of mathematics produces significantly greater improvement in mathematics performance of low achieving ninth grade students than teaching mathematics skills without computer assisted instruction.;The sample consisted of four classes (N = 46) of ninth grade students who had registered for the course "Mathematics Nine," and whose eighth grade ITBS scores fell between the 1st and 30th national percentile. Identified students were randomly assigned to one of four instructors and one of two instructional groups (computer assisted instruction or non computer instruction). Two classes with different instructors were taught the …
