Ora Mae Reeves did school lunch before there was school lunch. In the depths of the Great Depression, with four children in public school, Mrs. Reeves walked two miles in rural Vernon, AL, to volunteer to cook hot meals for the students, who brought a canned good from home as payment for their lunch. Update: Ora Mae Reeves, age 101, of Vernon, Alabama, died Jan. 31, 2012, at Aurora Australis Lodge in Columbus, Miss.

Ann started out in the Okolona Public School System as a cafeteria worker, moved up to be manager of the Okolona Elementary School cafeteria, and has been food service director since 1980. A firm believer in on-the-job training, she is an inspiration to all who work with her.

Like many others who have made child nutrition into a career, Jane Jantz came to the profession in a roundabout way. She and her husband moved from California to Mississippi, where farmland is more affordable. She planned to work one year to tide them over from a bad crop – that was nineteen years ago, and Jane loves serving the children more each year as manager of the Okolona Elementary School cafeteria.

A Wisconsin native, Ruth Jonen earned a degree in Dietetics at the University of Wisconsin – Stout, and then moved to Chicago. She has worked in school nutrition programs for almost 30 years, 27 of them in the suburban Cook County community in which she lives. Ruth served as School Nutrition Association President in 2005-2006.

Offie “Mama” Karnes was born and reared in Bedford, Virginia, where she attended a one-room school. After working for the American Viscose Company in the Food Service department, Mrs. Carnes went to work for Roanoke City Schools in 1959. Her salary then was 62¢ per hour. “Mama” Karnes credits excellent training in the Roanoke City system with enabling her to work her way up to Manager and having a very successful and rewarding thirty-year career with this school system.

Polly Holloway grew up on a farm in Tasewell County, Virginia. After graduating from a two-room high school, she went on to Virginia Tech, where she earned a degree in Home Economics in 1956. After a brief career as an Assistant Extension Agent, she moved to Roanoke, where she taught Special Ed for Roanoke County Schools. She was soon persuaded to take on the role of Cafeteria Supervisor and credits her state agency with offering valuable training. During the forty-three (43) years since 1964, when the Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE) was established, adult education scholars around the globe have achievements in the Field of Adult Education. Some of these findings have developed into trends which had special significance for a historic occasion of the Commission on international Adult Education (CIAE) Pre-Conference of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) Conference which included adult educators from various countries around the world in late 2006. Mrs. Mau was President-elect of her association when Hawaii hosted the Annual National Convention in 1976. University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Selected literature and Internet sites were used to identify universities that provide graduate academic degrees relevant to the management and care of natural science research collections. Twelve universities with degree programs not dedicated to the arts or humanity fields were selected for closer evaluation. By analyzing the courses offered in museology and the natural sciences at each university, seven universities were identified as currently in a position to provide some level of education and training needed by the future workforce of natural science research collections. However, only two universities stood out as being in the best position to serve most …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether or not a significant relationship exists among daily writing and student growth in phonemic awareness. The study also considered the impact of writing on the phonemic awareness development of students at different literacy levels. Although studies exist on the importance of phonemic awareness development in reading acquisition, a deficit exists examining the correlation among daily writing and the phonemic awareness development of students representing different literacy levels. Forty students in an experimental group engaged in daily writing opportunities, while 37 students in the control group engaged in less frequent writing …

The Peer Review of Teaching Project (PRTP) is a UNL campus program that supports teams of faculty in making visible the serious intellectual work of teaching. Begun in 1994, the project uses the same process one would use to explore a research question by having faculty inquire, analyze, and document their teaching practices and the resulting student learning and then make these results accessible for use, review, and assessment by one’s peers.
