Many counselor education programs are now offered online due to convenience and accessibility. The pandemic has forced educators to learn how to connect with students on an online platform genuinely. Some online college students report feeling disconnected, lonely, and isolated. However, online educators can reach these students through creative mediums, which helps them feel more engaged and increases their learning experience. This conference proceeding will discuss the importance of connection for students, how to creatively promote communication and connection with students, technology platforms, and ways to safeguard ethics during supervision, training, and teaching.

Ungrading, or alternative assessment, is an educational practice that is growing in use and can be effective in online counselor education. Alternative assessment aligns with social justice, competency-based, and community of learning educational philosophies. Assessment that is meaningful for teachers and learners can increase engagement, openness to feedback, and intrinsic motivation for counselors-in-training. Today’s complex problems transcend borders and require a collective and adaptive learning response. Literature suggests that, because the traditional hierarchical or positional style of leadership cannot effectively address problems we face today, leadership should take a more collaborative and systemic form. Rost (1991) characterized this new approach as the postindustrial paradigm of leadership. Unfortunately, changing the existing conception of leadership is not easy. This is a study about secondary ethnic studies classes within the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, a novel coronavirus caused dramatic changes in society, and social protests erupted in the United States in response to violence against people of color. This period of dual crises created a collective period of turbulence for educators in the United States as schooling moved to emergency virtual environments. A few months ago, I began devouring information about ungrading with a fervent appetite. I started with the book Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What To Do Instead), edited by Susan Blum, and listened to just about every podcast where she was interviewed about this topic. I then read other books she recommended, like Wad-Ja-Get: The Grading Game in American Education by Howard Kirschenbaum and Punished By Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A’s, and Praise by Alfie Kohn.
