As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, educational activities were disrupted globally. In Pakistan, schools were also closed, and though some schools had started teaching online, the staff (including principals and teachers) and students' readiness for education during the pandemic remained unexplored. An internet-based survey was conducted to explore the experiences of the teachers and principals during the lockdown. The survey included both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Responses were collected from respondents in different parts of Pakistan, with the majority coming from Sindh and coming from both the private and public sector. During this presentation, Dr. Samantha Robinson (Teaching Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences) discusses the realities of remote instruction and provides practical tips to increase student engagement in the physical and/or virtual classroom. Primarily focused on larger classrooms, where typical engagement strategies feel more onerous, this presentation offers advice on how instructors (even in the remote classroom environment) can increase emotional and cognitive student engagement without feeling overburdened.

City University of New York's pre-service teachers in clinical coursework (fieldwork and student teaching) during AY20-21 will face new and emerging challenges. Developing relationships with cooperating teachers, students and families, some of whom may have experienced significant trauma during the pandemic; teaching content remotely; utilizing new technologies — these are just some examples of the topics included in this brief.
