Simulating Function Generators And Oscilloscopes In A Virtual Laboratory Environment, Yiyang Li, Yuzhong Shen, Charles I. Sukenik Apr 2023

Simulating Function Generators And Oscilloscopes In A Virtual Laboratory Environment, Yiyang Li, Yuzhong Shen, Charles I. Sukenik

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference

This paper discusses the development of a virtual laboratory for simulating electronic instruments commonly used in science and engineering courses, such as function generators and digital storage oscilloscopes. Mathematical equations are used to represent continuous signals and ensure signal integrity, while C# delegates are adopted to enable communication between simulated devices. The approach allows for loose coupling between software components and high cohesion of individual components, and can be applied to other virtual laboratory developments. The virtual laboratory provides a means for students to gain hands-on experience with electronic instruments and improve their understanding of theoretical concepts.

Online Echocardiography Modules For Pediatric Cardiology Fellows, Sarah Studyvin, Doaa Aly, Tyler Johnson, Laura Kuzava, Alison Samrany, Nitin Madan, Sanket Shah May 2021

Online Echocardiography Modules For Pediatric Cardiology Fellows, Sarah Studyvin, Doaa Aly, Tyler Johnson, Laura Kuzava, Alison Samrany, Nitin Madan, Sanket Shah

Research Days

Background: Adequate echocardiographic (echo) education is integral to successful cardiology training. Online education is proven to be effective in other specialties, but pediatric echo training data are lacking.

Objectives/Goal: Our aim was to design and assess the role of a novel online module-based curriculum to enhance pediatric cardiology fellows’ echo education.

Methods/Design: Four interactive modules, focused on principles and interpretation of a normal echo, were delivered to fellows. Content included high quality 2D and 3D echo clips as well as interactive quizzes and could be accessed from a phone, tablet, or computer. All fellows completed pre- and post-tests, validated by …

Trials And Tribulations Of Designing An Online Science Lab, Kalli-Ann Binkowski Jun 2017

Trials And Tribulations Of Designing An Online Science Lab, Kalli-Ann Binkowski

Innovate! Teaching with Technology Conference

Between supplies, safety, simplicity, authenticity, inquiry, and time, online labs are really difficult to design. Learn how we utilized free resources and a vendor kit to create an authentic inquiry lab for online students, that includes safety instruction, videos, and group work.

Online Biology With A Lab? It Can Be Done Well!, Kalli-Ann Binkowski, Annette Mcnamara Jun 2017

Online Biology With A Lab? It Can Be Done Well!, Kalli-Ann Binkowski, Annette Mcnamara

Innovate! Teaching with Technology Conference

Designing an online course from a face-to-face course took nine months, an instructor, two designers, one academic technologist, a usability lab, and one student worker. Our goal was to use current best practices to make an interactive, authentic learning experience for every online student, with a hands-on lab to boot! Join us to learn how we managed to build this complex course in a way that reduced instructor grading effort and was highly usable to students.

Raise Your Cards - A Look At Plickers In An Adult Learning Environment, Megan Taylor Aug 2016

Raise Your Cards - A Look At Plickers In An Adult Learning Environment, Megan Taylor

SIDLIT Conference

At SIDLIT 2015, the session on the free Plickers polling system dazzled many of us. Members of the National Weather Service Training Center immediately began integrating this tool into their classes. In this session, we will review our successful integration of Plickers. We will also examine the results of using this technique with adult learners with a predominately introverted, scientific mindset. This session will also include information about what has and has not worked. Are you unfamiliar with Plickers? No worries, we will do a quick overview of this tool at the beginning of the presentation.

Stealth Assessment In Video Games, Val Shute Aug 2015

Stealth Assessment In Video Games, Val Shute

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Games can be powerful vehicles to support learning, but their success in education hinges on getting the assessment part right. In this presentation, I will explore how games can use stealth assessment to measure and support the learning of competencies critical for the future. I will discuss what stealth assessment is, why it is important, and how to develop and accomplish it. I will also provide examples within the context of a game called Physics Playground that I designed and developed with my team. I’ll share what has been learned by recent research on stealth assessments in games, including: Does …

Math 1113 Precalculus Emporium: A Multi-Institutional Online Pre-Calculus Course, Kris Biesinger, Chuck Kutal, Nathan Moon Mar 2014

Math 1113 Precalculus Emporium: A Multi-Institutional Online Pre-Calculus Course, Kris Biesinger, Chuck Kutal, Nathan Moon

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)

One stumbling block for students considering becoming a STEM major has been introductory math courses. A new, innovative precalculus course being developed and delivered by five USG institutions may provide a solution. MATH 1113e Precalculus Emporium combines lessons learned from the Math Emporium model pioneered at Virginia Tech with elements of MOOC delivery to create a highly interactive and support rich online course model. While the pilot debuted in January 2014 with students and faculty from five institutions, the larger vision is for the course to become available for all USG institutions in the near future.
