This year, we were delighted to welcome Mr Piyush Gupta as SMU’s second Chairman of the Board of Trustees, as well as to see the start of Professor Lily Kong’s second term as SMU President. There were a number of important senior appointments as we introduced new offices and restructured to enhance our research, partnerships, engagement, and transformation capabilities. Lee Kong Chian School Of Business Year In Review 2021-2022, Singapore Management University

SMU Corporate Reports

As Singapore and the world reopens, this has led to changes, especially as people feel safe to travel abroad again. This has impacted us of course. We have seen an 8.9 percent drop in undergraduate applications from our 2022 high. This decline is due in no small part to the relaxation of travel restrictions. However, despite the drop, the quality of applications this year is similar or maybe even slightly better than the year before. In the end, we matriculated 884 students, above our target. This includes 38 scholarship recipients who accepted our offer, representing a record yield. We have …

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2021/2022, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

The title of the annual report, “Our Evolving Garden”, points to how the University continues to develop and progress as “One SMU”. With the world now learning to live with COVID-19 as endemic, the last year has been one in which SMU students have been able to resume many of the activities that contribute towards providing a transformative education. For example, they were able to attend many more events on campus and to travel overseas for internships, exchanges, and community service projects. Faculty too were able to attend academic conferences and meet with educational partners, business connections and research associates …

Lee Kong Chian School Of Business Year In Review 2020-2021, Singapore Management University

SMU Corporate Reports

The last 12 months have been a roller coaster for Singapore and the world. Vaccines initially offered what seemed to be a clear way out of the Covid-19 pandemic but the more transmissible Delta variant has complicated matters considerably. However, despite the many challenges that the school has faced, I am happy to report that we have had a very good year overall. First of all, after a thorough and grueling process, the school received its EQUIS re-accreditation that will be valid for five years. The school has also received re-accreditation from AACSB International this year as well. The re-accreditation …

Last year, the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic reaffirmed that the three strategic priorities we had identified for SMU and the wider community – digital transformation, sustainable living and growth in Asia – are the right priorities. This paper describes an undergraduate accounting analytics course which was delivered based on an experiential learning approach. This accounting analytics course is timely as, with the proliferation of Big Data, several accounting professional bodies have highlighted the importance of developing analytical skills among accounting graduates. The experiential learning approach was adopted because there is a need to equip students with future work skills so as to tackle increasingly complex problems. The professors collaborate with external partners to design a course which combines theory with experiential learning through heavy use of projects involving real world problems. Students rated the course favourably. …

Impact Of Technology On Learning And Scholarship, And The New Learning Paradigm, Arnoud Cyriel Leo De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recently I took on the challenge of teaching a course to Undergraduate students at Singapore Management University. It had been more than 20 years since I had taught any Undergraduates, having spent most of my career at Graduate Business Schools. I did it partially because many of my younger colleagues had told me that teaching had changed tremendously. Deep down I may have felt that I was perhaps a little out of touch with what happened inside and, as I would soon discover, outside our classrooms. I was indeed intrigued by the experience. When I entered the classroom for my …

Essentially, the educational capstone projects provide an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned and prepare themselves for industry needs. Therefore mining such projects gives insights of students’ experiences as well as industry project requirements and trends. In particular, we mine capstone projects executed by Information Systems students to discover patterns and insights related to people, organization, domain, industry needs and time. We build a capstone projects mining system (CPMS) based on classification models that leverage text mining, natural …
