Proceedings Of The 3rd Conference Of Doctoral Education In Design (2003), David Durling, Kazuo Sugiyama

DRS Conference Volumes

The 3rd conference on 'Doctoral Education in Design' was hosted by several Asian design societies in partnership with the Design Research Society, and was held in parallel with the 6th Asian Design Conference, in Tsukuba, Japan, in October 2003. The call for papers stressed an overriding theme of the 'Practice of Research'. We were particularly interested in identifying best practice, and the practical application of best practice, with a focus on organising and teaching the doctorate in design.

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore Oct 2003

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examined the effectiveness of using selected self-report measures assessing motivational orientation, learning strategies, procrastination, and perceptions of daily hassles to facilitate the prediction of student engagement in a self-paced introductory psychology course. Research has shown these factors to be associated with academic success, and of concern to instructors and students alike. Surveys that economically and effectively assess these factors would be invaluable for the instructor attempting to predict student engagement and determining possible interventions to promote academic success. Four surveys purporting to measure the constructs were chosen. A demographic survey was also administered.

Assessment Of Introduction To Engineering And Problem-Solving Course, Joni E. Spurlin, Jerome P. Lavelle, Mary Clare Robbins, Sarah A. Rajala

Sarah A. Rajala

At North Carolina State University, the freshmen’s first course in engineering is E101, Introduction to Engineering and Problem-Solving. It is offered each fall to over 1,100 first year engineering students. In an effort to continuously improve the course, we put into place a plan to assess the course's learning outcomes. Assessment data collected in fall 2001 and fall 2002 through surveys, rubrics, and class assignments were evaluated to determine how well students met learning outcomes related to communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This paper presents the assessment methods used in this course and provides examples of how the assessment findings were …

The Inverse Problem: Christianity Through A Mathematical Lens, Sharon K. Robbert May 2003

The Inverse Problem: Christianity Through A Mathematical Lens, Sharon K. Robbert

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2003

An inverse problem is a partner problem that reverses some type of direct problem. Usually the inverse problem is more challenging to solve than the direct problem: integration is more challenging than differentiation, factoring large numbers is more challenging than multiplying numbers. In this paper, the author poses that using mathematical thinking to understand the concepts of theological principles is the direct problem to the much more challenging inverse problem of using theological thinking to influence understanding in mathematics. Acknowledging that a problem is difficult allows one to be satisfied with understanding small pieces and progressing slowly to a complete …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker Apr 2003

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examined differences in student achievement on the 2000 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Mathematics Test by their teachers’ years-of-experience teaching mathematics. Data examined were mean scale scores of fourth and eighth grades in five sample groups: national (public and private school students combined), national public school students, and Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas public school students. These states were chosen because of their statewide systematic school reform efforts. The research question was: Are mathematics scores of students of more experienced mathematics teachers higher than those of students of less experienced teachers? The National Assessment of Educational Progress data …

Gender Differences In Preference For Learning Environment Among Aviation Education Students, Eric M. Moyer Apr 2003

Gender Differences In Preference For Learning Environment Among Aviation Education Students, Eric M. Moyer

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study investigated whether differences existed between sex, male and female, for the preference of three different syllabi describing three different learning environments. Learning environments consisted of collaborative, and individual, with the individual sub-divided into competitive, and individual while co-varying participants for credit hours. 264 surveys were administered to students in freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes in order to collect preference, and demographic data. The surveys were presented as three fictional syllabi differing only in class grading format, and a paragraph on the instructional philosophy of the professor. Instructional philosophies described the proposed environment of the class by enforcing …
