The Making Of A Textbook On Behavior Analysis And Autism A Behavior Analytic Approach, Sebastien Bosch Aug 2001

The Making Of A Textbook On Behavior Analysis And Autism A Behavior Analytic Approach, Sebastien Bosch

Dissertations

After deciding that a need existed for writing a textbook on autism from a behavior analytic perspective, Dr. Malott and I developed Behavior Analysis. Autism and Related Disabilities (BAARD) for use by the students enrolled in the autism practicum at Western Michigan University. As in a circular relationship, the practicum students evaluated and guided the subsequent revisions of the manuscript, and the revisions influenced the subsequent evaluations. BAARD covers all the principles and concepts of behavior analysis that are relevant to treatments and issues in autism and related disabilities and numerous treatments and phenomena specific to developmental disabilities.

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson Jun 2001

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

Does acceleration due to gravity increase or decrease upon descending from Earth’s surface? The answer—as we show—depends on one’s model for Earth’s density. For our Earth, gravity increases before it collapses to zero at Earth center.

Low Ses Black College Choice: Playing On An Unlevel Playing Field, Michael J. Smith Apr 2001

Low Ses Black College Choice: Playing On An Unlevel Playing Field, Michael J. Smith

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an effort to present a more complete picture of college access and opportunity within the African American community, this study took a closer look at the college choice process for low socioeconomic status (SES) blacks. The participation of this group in college choice is important to consider because admission into college has become a high-stakes game (McDonough 1994) that they may not be prepared to play. It is important to understand the attitudes, perceptions and concerns low SES black parents have with respect to this important family event. As with other Americans, social class "matters" for blacks. Even though …

Application Of Biotechnology To Solve Relevant Biological Problems Promotes Understanding Of Underlying Concepts, P. A. Burrowes, G. M. Nazario

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Although some efforts have been made to modify the curriculum of the Introductory Biology laboratories from a passive to a more experimental form, the use of modern biotechnology had not been implemented at our institution. The need to understand the applications of modern technology to real-life situations seems imperative at the turn of the century [1,2]. Because several studies have shown that the study of biotechnology by itself does not increase conceptual understanding, the objective of this research was to determine if the use of biotechnology to solve relevant biological problems increased conceptual understanding among our students. We designed two …

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2001 - 2002, Singapore Management University Jan 2001

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2001 - 2002, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

If the first year of incorporation was the paving of the foundation for SMU, the second year was one of laying the first building blocks. For the university, this was a year for surging ahead – of exploration and adventure. With a sizeable student population, a faculty of international repute and two schools going on three, SMU is growing from strength to strength at an unbelievable rate. But beyond sheer numbers, I sense and see a spirit of fervour and adventure in the work of students, faculty and staff in every corner of this institution that we have founded. Our …

Assessment Of Toefl Scores And Esl Classes As Criteria For Admission To Adult And Technical Education And Other Selected Marshall University Graduate Programs, Nancy E. Person

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to investigate the academic success of international students who are admitted to Marshall University’s Adult and Technical Education and other selected graduate degree programs. The study compared those students who entered Marshall University through TOEFL scores and those who completed ESL classes as admission criteria for entrance. One key question was to determine whether either of these groups was academically prepared for college level studies. Another goal was to determine if demographic factors play a role in student success. The convenient sample consisted of 64 females and 62 males from 22 different countries, ranging …

Variation In Research Assignments Across The Community College Curriculum, Patricia Ann Hadjibabaie Jan 2001

Variation In Research Assignments Across The Community College Curriculum, Patricia Ann Hadjibabaie

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis aims to show ways in which research assignments vary, despite the oft-held assumption that these assignments are fundamentally the same, regardless of discipline. for this purpose, research assignments were collected from insructors at one community college. These assignments were analyzed in terms of the following six dimensions: assignment title; topic selection; purpose; approach; format; and source requirements. The assignments were then examined for patterns in their variations across the disciplines, and across instructors within the same discipline. The findings reveal variation along each of the six dimensions. Assignment titles were perhaps the most variable; in fact, in many …

Negotiating A Labyrinth: Uncovering Meaning Through Biography, Floretta Thornton-Reid Jan 2001

Negotiating A Labyrinth: Uncovering Meaning Through Biography, Floretta Thornton-Reid

Perspectives In Learning

Biographical method is one of “several intellectual disciplines that make use of life writing” (Smith, 1994, p. 286). However, biographies are probably better described as an interdisciplinary methodology that incorporates several approaches to qualitative research including but not limited to life history, narrative analysis, case study, historical social science, grounded theory and ethnography (Marshall & Rossman, 1999; Riessman, 1993; Atkinson, 1998). In laymen’s terms, a biography can be understood as the written history of a person’s life. Thus the life history or narrative story of a person is a key biographical concept. Controversy has long surrounded life history. Runyan (1982a) …

Learning In Process: Forming Student/Teacher/Librarian Research Partnerships, Pamela Yuill Jan 2001

Learning In Process: Forming Student/Teacher/Librarian Research Partnerships, Pamela Yuill

Perspectives In Learning

Librarians and teaching faculty recognize that research is more than the “necessary evil” many students consider it to be. Doing research provides an ideal opportunity to develop and apply creative, analytical and reflective thinking skills to a real problem originating in the need to know. By linking new information to what is already known, and engaging in a dialogic process with both the literature and the subject of inquiry, the student researcher constructs and articulates knowledge. While recognizing the learning potential of the research process, we are also aware that it often does not live up to its educative potential. …

Making Good Tenure Decisions, Samuel L. Becker, Kathleen M. Galvin, Marsha Houston, Gustav W. Friedrich, Judy C. Pearson, William J. Seiler, Judith S. Trent

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Whether to recommend the granting or denial of tenure to a faculty member is the most important decision a department makes. It not only has an effect on the professional life of a colleague, it has a major influence on the direction and long-term quality of the department. Therefore, it is essential that the decision be a good one. Although there is no way to absolutely ensure it, since some faculty members greatly improve with time and experience, while others fall apart, we believe the criteria and procedures we suggest can help to substantially increase the probability of a good …

Dynamics Of Teachers' Aesthetic Engagement With Children's Literature, Susan C. Griffith Jan 2001

Dynamics Of Teachers' Aesthetic Engagement With Children's Literature, Susan C. Griffith

Educational Studies Dissertations

This research study seeks to bring the missing voices of teachers into the conversation about teaching and learning children's literature at the college level. Grounded in an empirical base that affirms a need for this perspective, the study investigates and describes the dimensions, patterns and variations that constitute the dynamics of engagement that characterize teachers' experiences with children's literature as aesthetic experiences of adult reading.
