During the past several years, NC State University has offered several experimental courses designed for the first year student in engineering; IMPEC, an integrated approach to mathematics, physics, engineering, and chemistry; E123, a mechanical dissection course which is now linked with the first year writing and composition course; and ECE 292D, a hands-on team based design course offered to upper class students as well. All were offered as an alternative to the introductory course (E100) that had little academic content, no engineering problem solving, and consisted of a large lecture room format with information dissemination as the major goal. Describes how a core group of faculty built the Lucid Chemistry Web Site over four years and how students in large first and second year chemistry courses have started to use it (slowly at first, and now to near 100 percent participation in some classes). The facility has been developed for use by key administrative units (Testing and Evaluation, Computer Services). Now coming to the Lucid Chemistry Web Site are roughly one‐half of the chemistry department instructors and tenure‐track faculty. Asks whether the task of teaching needs more “builders”. The Effect Of Study Skills Training On United States Air Force Allied Health Students, John C. Griffith

Study skills intervention was shown to significantly increase end-of-course scores and decrease remedial instruction for 90 randomly selected students attending a three month Air Force allied health technician course. Additionally, students who received the study skills intervention graduated at a higher rate than those who did not. Study skills training in a corporate setting can enhance student learning and significantly reduce training costs.
