Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton May 2004

Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Quilting is a reflection of women's roles in the family. What happened to quilting between 1940 and 1970 is important to examine because it tells us much about the transformation of women from producers to consumers. In the twentieth century, quilts were increasingly replaced by mass produced blankets. While quilting literature has argued that quilting, for all practical purposes, ceased between 1940 and 1970, women resisted the change to consumerism by continuing to produce quilts and negotiating their use of mass production; The portrayal of quilting in magazines shifted from an integral role as thrifty and decorative to being almost …

Papers in Ecology

There are few well-documented, general ecological principles that can be applied to pressing environmental issues. When they discuss them at all, ecologists often disagree about the relative importance of different aspects of the science’s original and still important issues. It may be that the sum of ecological science is not open to universal statements because of the wide range of organizational, spatial, and temporal phenomena, as well as the sheer number of possible interactions. We believe, however, that the search for general principles has been inadequate to establish the extent to which generalities are possible. We suggest that ecologists may need to …

The Year Round Calendar: An Analysis Of Student Outcomes, Kimberly Moore, Deborah A. Verstegen

Educational Considerations

Almost a decade ago, the National Education Commission on Time and Learning warned Americans that schools were unable to meet the demands of a new global economy. For 150 years, schools had operated on schedules that suited only the top students, while average and poor students simply dropped out to make decent livings on farms or in factories.

The purpose of this research was to examine criteria to determine its predictability of graduate success, as measured by graduate GPA, as well as determine whether performance is different for students who require criteria to be waived. Current AFIT eligibility criteria include undergraduate GPA, GRE test scores, or GMAT test scores. Other variables examined in this study include: GRE-Analytical test scores; rank/grade; prior enlistment; …

Expenditures Streams And School Improvement In Kentucky: Does Money Matter?, Edward B. Reeves Feb 2004

Expenditures Streams And School Improvement In Kentucky: Does Money Matter?, Edward B. Reeves

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Every Kentucky public school is expected to achieve the goal of proficiency on the State's Accountability Index by the year 2014. Many schools may not reach the proficiency goal in time without a broad, multifaceted approach to enhance educational outcomes. A strategy to optimize the allocation of school district funds may contribute to this goal. Previous studies have attempted to answer the question "does money matter?" for raising school performance, but to date the findings have proven inconsistent. One reason for this might be that most of these studies have used a global measure of monetary resources, such as total …

The Teacher Shortage: National Trends For Science And Mathematics Teachers, D. R. Sterling Jan 2004

The Teacher Shortage: National Trends For Science And Mathematics Teachers, D. R. Sterling

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The shortage of science and mathematics teachers is a growing problem in the United States. This article looks at what research says about the causes for the growing teacher shortage and its effects on student achievement. As the teacher shortage worsens, teachers without a science or mathematics backgrounds are tasked to teach science and mathematics or underqualified teachers are being hired to fill the shortage. These underqualified teachers are not remaining in the profession, thus not solving the teacher shortage problem and creating an even higher turnover rate for teachers. In addition, experienced teachers are leaving the profession in greater …

Bias In The Evaluation Process: Influences Of Speaker Order, Speaker Quality, And Gender On Rater Error In The Performance Based Course, Paul D. Turman, Matthew H. Barton

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study examines how variations in speaker order increase the potential for rater error in the performance based course. Seventy-six undergraduate raters were randomly assigned to one of eight treatment groups and asked to grade eight-week training course. Speaker order and presentation quality varied across groups and an ANOVA was used to examine significant differences across rater assessments, feedback quality and rater gender. Significant main effects were identified in each of the eight treatment groups suggesting that speaker order influenced rater scoring.
