Maine has a unique environment to drive aquaculture research, as there are roughly 3,500 miles of coastline that serve as a living laboratory. Aquaculture was identified as a key growth sector for the state by the Maine Innovation Economic Advisory Board in the 2010 Science and Technology Action Plan. In 2014 alone, the aquaculture industry grossed $137.6 million in economic impact for the state.

Our current NSF EPSCoR Track 1 grant, the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET), consists of four research Themes: Ecological and Sociological Carrying Capacity; Aquaculture in a Changing Ecosystem; Innovations in Aquaculture; and Human Dimensions. These Themes …

The University of Maine is committed to supporting the faculty in their roles as educators. Toward that end, determination of optimal organization structure and allocation of resources that will enable best practices deserves thoughtful consideration. The Commons Data Set (CDS) initiative is a collaborative effort among data providers in higher education and publishers to develop a core set of clear, standard data, and definitions regarding student cohorts. The Common Data Set includes information in the following categories:

Academic year 2015–16 was a productive one for the Division of Academic Affairs. The fall 2015 census showed 10,922 students enrolled at UMaine, 85 percent engaged in undergraduate studies and 15 percent in graduate education. There were 260,983 student credit hours taught in 2015–16, which represents a 5 percent increase in annual credit hour production over the past five years. UMaine awarded 2,228 degrees, including 359 master’s and 60 doctoral degrees.
