Community College Academic Advisors’ Considerations Of Ethical Issues Related To The Use Of Learning Analytics, Anna Elizabeth Jones
Community College Academic Advisors’ Considerations Of Ethical Issues Related To The Use Of Learning Analytics, Anna Elizabeth Jones
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Learning analytics is an emerging trend in American community colleges brought about by technological advancements, institutional accountability, and external pressure on institutions to substantiate and improve learning. Learning analytics can potentially improve student engagement, retention, and success but also possess inherent ethical and legal challenges like student privacy and confidentiality violations and users’ bias and discrimination. Researchers know little about the ethical considerations of advisors who serve diverse student populations enrolled at community colleges, and there is a need to better understand various users’ experiences to mitigate poor ethical use and to protect multiple stakeholders. This multiple case study employed …
Investigating The Effect Of Universal Design For Learning On Learner Performance, Engagement, And Self-Efficacy, Ana Elizabeth Redstone
Investigating The Effect Of Universal Design For Learning On Learner Performance, Engagement, And Self-Efficacy, Ana Elizabeth Redstone
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
This study sought to address the gap in knowledge about the effect of UDL features on asynchronous online postsecondary learners’ achievement, engagement, and self-efficacy. The study also described a process for redesigning an online course to incorporate UDL components and provided specific examples of the implemented UDL guidelines. The study was conducted in a three-phase multimethod research design, which included quantitative and qualitative data collected from the participants, the learning management system (LMS), and the course instructor.
In collaboration with the course instructor, the researcher redesigned an existing asynchronous online university Computer Science course using UDL guidelines to address learning …
Lms Problem-Posing Academic Relationships Between Faculty And Students: A Post-Intentional Phenomenological Study Of Dialogical Relationships In Asynchronous Online Courses, Sheri L. Prupis
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Drawing on Freire’s Engaged Pedagogy as a theoretical framework, I investigated the manifestation of dialogical relationships between faculty and students in fully asynchronous online courses. Employing a post-intentional phenomenological methodology, I examined how students and faculty held varying expectations for relationships in asynchronous online courses. The findings revealed that while students preferred transactional exchanges, faculty aspired to foster more profound and more enduring relationships with their students. This divergence can be partly attributed to the transactional exchange structure of Learning Management Systems (LMS), which heavily influences how faculty design and deliver courses and how students participate.
Teaching Higher Education During A Pandemic: A Phenomenological Study Of Instructor Decisions Associated With Switching From Face-To-Face To Online-Only Sessions, Steven M. Miner
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, university instructors were required to shift their course delivery from face-to-face to online-only presentations with two weeks of preparation. Volunteering instructors were interviewed via a semi-structured interview protocol regarding their actions to maintain instructor presence in an online-only setting. The term emergency remote teaching (ERT), defined by fellow researchers as the adoption of just-in-time remote teaching practices that would otherwise be offered face-to-face, aligned with the actions taken by interviewees. The data indicated that given an event requiring ERT, instructors should: overcome technology issues for themselves and their students to verify communication pathways, and exhibit …
Artificial Intelligence In Higher Education: The State Of The Field, Helen Crompton, Diane Burke
Artificial Intelligence In Higher Education: The State Of The Field, Helen Crompton, Diane Burke
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
This systematic review provides unique findings with an up-to-date examination of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education (HE) from 2016 to 2022. Using PRISMA principles and protocol, 138 articles were identified for a full examination. Using a priori, and grounded coding, the data from the 138 articles were extracted, analyzed, and coded. The findings of this study show that in 2021 and 2022, publications rose nearly two to three times the number of previous years. With this rapid rise in the number of AIEd HE publications, new trends have emerged. The findings show that research was conducted in six of …

Ict Security Tools And Techniques Among Higher Education Institutions: A Critical Review, Miko Nuñez, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Chris Jordan Aliac, Lemuel Clark Velasco
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly relying on digital technologies for classroom and organizational management, but this puts them at higher risk for information and communication (ICT security attacks. Recent studies show that HEIs have experienced more security breaches in ICT security composed of both cybersecurity an information security. A literature review was conducted to identify common ICT security practices in HEIs over the last decade. 11 journal articles were profiled and analyzed, revealing threats to HEIs’ security and protective measures in terms of organizational security, technological security, physical security, and standards and frameworks. Security tools and techniques were grouped …
Preservice Secondary Science Teachers' Reflections In Using Modeling & Simulation Applications As Instructional Tools For Learning, Mary C. Enderson, Elizabeth Langran (Ed.), Paula Christensen (Ed.), Jarrod Sanson (Ed.)
Preservice Secondary Science Teachers' Reflections In Using Modeling & Simulation Applications As Instructional Tools For Learning, Mary C. Enderson, Elizabeth Langran (Ed.), Paula Christensen (Ed.), Jarrod Sanson (Ed.)
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
Preparing preservice teachers to construct learning environments integrating technological tools is a challenge that higher education continues to tackle. One way to address this challenge is to have preservice teachers integrate modeling & simulation (M&S) tools while teaching, reflect on the experience, and attempt to identify ways to make improvements in instructional practices. This case study of five preservice secondary science teachers, enrolled in a course along with student teaching, was designed to study M&S tools integrated into instruction and how preservice teachers thought about the experience. Participants taught at least one lesson integrating M&S tools where they were to …
How It Course Improves Digital Competencies: An Experimental Study In Science Education, Mustafa Tevfik Hebebci, Helen Crompton
How It Course Improves Digital Competencies: An Experimental Study In Science Education, Mustafa Tevfik Hebebci, Helen Crompton
STEMPS Faculty Publications
The rising significance of technology in society has caused a surge in the requirement of individuals possessing digital competencies. In the current era, digital skills are progressively vital for both personal and occupational growth. Governments have acknowledged the value of digital competencies and have incorporated them as part of fundamental proficiencies in numerous countries. Pre-service teachers have a paramount role in molding forthcoming generations, highlighting their necessity to possess robust digital competencies. This research centers on how an "Information Technologies in Science Education" course influences the digital competency progression in pre-service teachers. The study deployed a pre-test post-test experimental design …
