The 1993-94 year was a turning point for IMSA and our annual report helps to tell the story of our continued transformation from that of "school" to that of "educational laboratory/resource for the state of Illinois."

On June 11,1990, following a year of community discussions, extensive research and intensive planning, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy unveiled a revolutionary strategic plan for its future. The plan, which received unanimous support from the board of trustees, included strategies in ten areas: curriculum; assessment of student achievement; teaching; business, research and educational partnerships; recruitment and support of a diverse student population; private sector funding; marketing/communications; integration of academic and residential life; organizational structure; and personal and professional growth for faculty and staff.

The study examined the creation of an organizational culture at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The study focused on the concept of change and the effects of change on the organization and the organizational participants since the creation of the Academy in 1985. Changes in the structure and management of the Academy provided the basis for participant response.

Leon N. Lederman, Illinois' first science adviser, worries about "the glaze." It coats the eyes of politicians when scientific subjects come up. The glaze might not be so important if it weren't for the fact that crucial policy issues involving science and technology are everywhere: global climate change, solid waste disposal, high-speed rail transit and stimulation of the advanced technology industry — to name just a few.

Having successfully met the challenges of the start-up years (1986-1989), our fourth school year became a time for thoughtful reflection, refocus and renewal. Dr. Leon M. Lederman, Director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois, has been named one of three recipients of the 1988 Nobel Prize for physics. Sharing the prize with Dr. Lederman are Dr. Melvin Schwartz and Dr. Jack Steinberger. The three have been cited for their discovery, in 1962, of a second neutrino, an elementary subatomic particle. Fermilab is operated by the Universities Research Association, Inc., under contract with the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

At the conclusion of the 1988 spring legislative session, the Academy's budget review process was transferred from the Illinois State Board of Education to the Illinois Board of Higher Education. The idea grew out of the experience of Saturday Morning Phy9ic3 at Fermilab where we recognized that the exceptionally bright high school student was not being challenged by the generally good schools in the affluent suburbs.

An important event was a design workshop held on December of 1983 in which all the educational constituencies were represented: high schools, experts in gifted education, seven Illinois universities, community colleges, industrial research scientists, Fermilab and Argonne.

The objectives of the Academy would be to accept gifted high school juniors and, in three years, provide students completely prepared to enter college as juniors.

It is proposed that the school be very strong in math-science, but it does not take too much thought to realize that it must be almost as strong in English, Social Studies and the Humanities.
